    High Plains Camping

    Easy access, kind, and clean.

I stopped for just one night on my way to Colorado in a baby 13 foot travel trailer and they were kind enough to put me back in the corner so I could watch the beautiful Kansas Sunset, and away from the big rigs. Big clean, hot and free showers with good water pressure.

    Goodland KOA

Comfortable safe stay near Interstate 70

Context:  I would not rate this campground 4 stars for destination camping, but I would like folks to know it is a great stop-over.  Typical trusted KOA cleanliness and quality.  Full hookups, some shade and nice grounds for kids and pets.  Friendly staff, wifi was good enough for online school; 4g cell coverage, cable too if you are set up in your rig.  Good health protocols during CV19.  Clean bathrooms and sites.  Camp grills, but no fire pits (it can be windy, but this campground's layout offers some blocking particularly to the south end).  After crossing Kansas from east to west, this is a great stop-over.  Also, if leaving Colorado late traveling west to east, same benefit.

    Goodland KOA

    Older KOA-Big Rig Spots

This is an old KOA with new concrete patios. You have to swing wide to pull in and there is a tight straight spot where you stop to register but doable for my Motorhome. Basic RV park with full hookups with level gravel lots. Pull through spot # 61 accommodated my motorhome and tow, which is 67 feet long. Checking was quick and the attendant was very nice.

Circle Drive — Historic Lake Scott State Park

    It doesn't look like Kansas

This was our last stop in our Tour de Kansas. The landscape felt more like the west than the flatlands of Kansas we had come to love. We pulled in on a Thurs. The campground was almost empty. Buy Friday afternoon, it was pretty full. By Sunday afternoon, we had it to our self again. We got a pull through site with 30 and 50 amp. Only 1 shower house was open in early April. But, it was 4 individual rooms, not common area setup.

The lake was small but very pretty, easy to kayak, SUP and fish. There are a few short trails to hike. As other have mentioned, there are amazing sites within 20 miles. The Little Jerusalem SP is a must. In the area, we saw turkey, owl, lots of buzzards, geese, albino buffelo and more cows than i have seen in one place. On Saturday, the local car club drove their vintage cars to the park for a pop up car show. The people were very nice. Garden City is about 40 miles away and offers everything you could want, brewery, good food, shopping galore, etc.

    Oberlin Inn & RV Park

    Small but functional

Nice little spot in beautiful NW Kansas. Conveniently located on the intersection of Hwy 83 and Hwy 36. Like everyone in this town, the owners are helpful and friendly. Full hookups available in all (6 or 7 total) RV spots. Back in only in all but end spot, with relatively level gravel pads. There is a gazebo on site with seating, and a fire pit and barbecue. It's open for all guests, including motel guests. I give 4 stars because of 2 drawbacks. Hotel WiFi is hit and miss, and the RV spots are small. We couldn't put out our awning without invading the neighbors. But good value for the money ($30/night). I recommend. Oh and do yourself a favor, go downtown and get the best pizza ever at the ReLoad Bar and Grill.

    Goodland KOA

    Cute, clean, friendly, and easy!

Super easy off I70 with little to no road noise. Friendly staff, we were escorted to our spot. Concrete patio and gravel pads that were mostly level. Very clean and quiet, shower house was exceptionally clean. Great camp store. Just overall very pleasant over nighter. Would definitely stay again!

    Goodland KOA

    On the road again...

This KOA has full hookups and nice level sites. The park is also super conveniently located to the interstate, so it’s the perfect place to pull off for the night.

The park does have a cute playground complete with old farm equipment and a small pool. The grass is all well kept and the bathrooms were very clean.

The town of Goodland is not known as a tourist attraction by any means but they are hiding a secret there, and it resides within walking distance of the KOA. Take your camera and venture around the block from the campground to a quaint park with giant ( over 20 foot tall) easel. Atop that easel sits an equally oversized rendition of the Vangogh sunflower painting- fitting for Kansas.

So, if you missed the giant ball of twine further up the highway- be sure you check out what has to be the largest art piece in the lower 48!

June 2021, great free camp location. Had the place almost all to ourselves. Big rig friendly. Many empty campsites right on the lake.

    Overnight ... look no more!

Very nice set up! Sites are full hookup with cable... cell signal good(AT&T)... level gravel sites...beautiful prairie views. There is a restaurant on site. Very nice host! We left with fresh eggs collected this morning! WOW!!!! Nice laundry room...bathroom was closed due to COVID. You can hear i80 but it was really not an issue with earplugs.

Guide to Colby

RV campgrounds near Colby, Kansas position travelers at the intersection of Interstate 70 and Highway 25 in northwestern Kansas, where elevations reach approximately 3,159 feet above sea level. The region experiences prairie winds with gusts frequently exceeding 20 mph, particularly during spring and fall. Summer temperatures often reach above 90°F between June and August, with limited natural shade at most campgrounds.

What to Do

Visit the Prairie Museum of Art and History: Located within driving distance of Whistle Stop RV and Antiques, this museum showcases the region's agricultural history. "Very nice to work with while traveling late at night. We will definitely stop again on our way to Colorado next time!" notes Crystal L.

Shop at nearby markets: Most RV parks offer convenient access to supplies. At High Plains Camping, visitors can enjoy on-site amenities. "They have a cafe 'Grub n Chug'. Great pizza and beer at a reasonable price," says Felix S.

Explore the Giant Van Gogh Painting: Located in Goodland, this 24x32-foot reproduction on an 80-foot easel is viewable year-round. "Go see large Van Gough easel nearby," recommends Joseph S. from Goodland KOA.

What Campers Like

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-kept shower facilities despite their highway-adjacent locations. "Very clean restrooms and showers," notes Crystal L. about Whistle Stop RV.

Overnight convenience: The area's RV parks specialize in providing efficient overnight stops. At Kansas Country Inn & RV Park, visitors appreciate the straightforward accommodations. "Got a level space to park, electric and bathrooms with a shower for $22. Perfect no fuss stop to nap and clean while passing through," says Roni J.

Prairie views: The open landscape offers distinct scenery. "I stopped for just one night on my way to Colorado in a baby 13 foot travel trailer and they were kind enough to put me back in the corner so I could watch the beautiful Kansas Sunset," writes Kim N. about High Plains Camping.

What You Should Know

Wind exposure: The high plains location means consistent wind patterns year-round. "It's super breezy here in the high plains and they've got some trees to help cut it down but it's the high plains!" mentions Jennifer H.

Highway noise varies: Some parks experience more traffic sound than others. At Oberlin Inn & RV Park, the location provides relatively quiet surroundings despite proximity to highways. "Nice little spot in beautiful NW Kansas. Conveniently located on the intersection of Hwy 83 and Hwy 36," reports Jason V.

Limited amenities at some locations: Facilities range from basic to full-service. "This was a convenient place to stop for the day. Has full hookups. Keep in mind it is right by a highway, so there was a lot of traffic sounds," explains Rosie M. about Kansas Country Inn & RV Park.

Tips for Camping with Families

Pool availability seasonal: Some parks offer swimming options during summer months. "Solid hookups, comfortable pool, it's super breezy here in the high plains," notes Jennifer H. about High Plains Camping.

Budget-friendly options: Several RV parks provide affordable rates for overnight stays. "It's very expensive per night here and u will be right by the highway I'm sleeping out of the back of my rodeo so the noise is very annoying but I'm sure in an rv it wouldn't be bad at all," mentions Sam W. about Whistle Stop RV.

Entertainment essentials: Bring activities for children as amenities are limited. At Goodland KOA, "There are recreational opportunities, whether or not they get used. There is a swimming pool (which was closed), a basketball goal, and a playground," according to Myron C.

Tips from RVers

Watch for thorny plants: Several campgrounds have ground hazards. "Thankful for electricity as it was cold. Watch for the thorny burrs that get all over shoes especially if you have a dog…. Would be very painful for them," warns Angie A. about Kansas Country Inn.

Level sites available: Most rv campgrounds in Colby, Kansas and surrounding areas offer relatively level parking. At Fort Wallace RV Sites, visitors find adequate setup space. "Great place for a stop over. Proceeds go to the local railroad museum/foundation," notes Shiner T.

Winter considerations: Prepare for cold-weather camping if traveling November through March. "Midnight stop to rest for a few hours. Basic, small setup for RVs. We used the electricity hookup, but it was too cold for us to hookup to water," explains Megan about Kansas Country Inn.
