    Oberlin Inn & RV Park

    Small but functional

Nice little spot in beautiful NW Kansas. Conveniently located on the intersection of Hwy 83 and Hwy 36. Like everyone in this town, the owners are helpful and friendly. Full hookups available in all (6 or 7 total) RV spots. Back in only in all but end spot, with relatively level gravel pads. There is a gazebo on site with seating, and a fire pit and barbecue. It's open for all guests, including motel guests. I give 4 stars because of 2 drawbacks. Hotel WiFi is hit and miss, and the RV spots are small. We couldn't put out our awning without invading the neighbors. But good value for the money ($30/night). I recommend. Oh and do yourself a favor, go downtown and get the best pizza ever at the ReLoad Bar and Grill.

    Sheridan State Fishing Lake

Cool fishing lake, with lots of free camping

We got here very late, and the place was empty. There was a stack of firewood next to the forepit, and the tent site was very even. Weather was gorgeous, and we didn't mind the mooing cows in the distance. There was a picnic table, and though the road was a bit rough on the minivan, it was a well maintained campsite.

    Sheridan State Fishing Lake

Beautiful, great stop for my trip out west

Lovely campsite! Plenty of spots! You can be on the water, tucked away, or grab a few sites with some friends! Awesome to have picnic tables. It was a little buggy at dusk, but other than that no complaints. I got to see 2 great blue herons and listen to 2 great horned owls call to each other at night - how awesome!

Kansas Country Inn & RV Park

    Small yet convenient

Very friendly staff. Convenient for an overnight stay. Affordable. Thankful for electricity as it was cold. Watch for the thorny burrs that get all over shoes especially if you have a dog…. Would be very painful for them. RVs very close to one another. Never accessed the bathhouse yet one was available with a combo. Good WiFi

    An RV hotel...brilliant !!

Tried to get a campsite at a nearby place while traveling though, but showers and such were closed....was told about this place. Desk clerk was great. Got a level space to park, electric and bathrooms with a shower for $22. Perfect no fuss stop to nap and clean while passing through.

Prairie Dog Campground — Prairie Dog State Park

    Ok, not too exciting

Super flat landscape, very short walking trail, main attraction is fishing, less wildlife than I expected. Quite a few campsites to choose from, some with more trees than others. We chose a primitive one. Also some new modern cabins. Ok place to stop over, I wouldn’t return but others seemed happy with it. And yes, you will definitely see prairie dogs :)

Prairie Dog Campground — Prairie Dog State Park

    A Pure Gem

Camping for anyone arriving at anytime. Don’t expect the best when arriving late, but most of you will have reservations, right? Then you will have the best. (Pause; Coyotes calling) this place has everything for any State Park you could ask. Expansive open grasslands a lake full of fish and fowl. Turkeys and whitetail deer and the coyotes call in the distance. A photographer could get lost in the pure wilderness available in the prairie. I’ve visited here during every season. The heat and bugs of mid July to the frozen autumn morings, always beautiful and teaming with wildlife. A great place to stay no matter your style. Just please be quiet, Mother Nature is listening.

    Sheridan State Fishing Lake

Great find for a late night on the road

Pulled in at 2am on Tuesday on our drive from Colorado to Vermont. Didn’t see a living soul from then till we left at 9am. I’d avoid the first loop because there’s a pretty loud generator sound. Other than that pretty nice and not too buggy.

Guide to Rexford

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Sheridan State Fishing Lake, visitors can catch multiple species despite their size limitations. "The game warden stopped by and said that the fish (carp, catfish, crappie, bluegill & shad) are all stunted. Too many fish for a small lake," notes Beverly W. about Sheridan State Fishing Lake.

Prairie dog viewing: Observe prairie dog colonies in their natural habitat at Prairie Dog State Park. "We got to see 2 great blue herons and listen to 2 great horned owls call to each other at night - how awesome!" shares kaeti R. about Sheridan State Fishing Lake.

Swimming: Norton Reservoir at Prairie Dog State Park has designated swimming areas during summer months. "Good swimming," mentions Dee W., who stayed at Prairie Dog Campground.

What campers like

Free campsite availability: Sheridan State Fishing Lake offers no-cost camping options with basic amenities. "June 2021, great free camp location. Had the place almost all to ourselves. Big rig friendly. Many empty campsites right on the lake," reports Jon B.

Wildlife viewing: The region offers opportunities to observe various wildlife species in their natural habitats. "Overnight we heard coyotes, crickets & cows," says Beverly W. about her stay at Prairie Dog Campground.

Spacious sites: Many cabin and campground areas provide room to spread out. "The sites were spacious and had a wonderful shelter!" notes Jane U. about her experience at Prairie Dog State Park.

What you should know

Seasonal bug issues: Insects can be problematic depending on season and location. "We camp in many places and have seldom seen so many ticks in one place," warns Leah M. about Shady Rest Campground at Prairie Dog State Park.

Weather considerations: Plains weather patterns can change rapidly with strong winds and storms. "Pulled in at 2am on Tuesday on our drive from Colorado to Vermont. Didn't see a living soul from then till we left at 9am. I'd avoid the first loop because there's a pretty loud generator sound," suggests Cedar O. about Sheridan State Fishing Lake.

Variable bathroom maintenance: Facility cleanliness varies across locations. "Bathrooms need work or at least someone that cleans them at least daily. The park is nice but the bathrooms are embarrassing," reports Terry about Shady Rest Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Off-season benefits: Consider late fall visits for fewer bugs and crowds. "I've been here twice now. Once in July and now at the very end of Oct. Better in Oct. No ticks or bugs and frankly of all the camping locations, there is a number of different choices, I had my section to myself," recommends Teresa T. about Shady Rest Campground.

Activity options: Look for campgrounds with multiple recreation options. "This place has swimming, a small hike, your choice of camping location, a frisbee golf course and miles one could hike or bike," notes Teresa T. about Oberlin Inn & RV Park.

Watch for hazards: Be aware of natural hazards that might affect children or pets. "Watch for the thorny burrs that get all over shoes especially if you have a dog…. Would be very painful for them," cautions Angie A. from Kansas Country Inn.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Choose sites based on shade and season. "There are a number of loops here, we chose one with a lot of trees. There are some without water (fyi) and some that don't allow RVs," advises Lynn G. about Prairie Dog State Park.

Winter hookup considerations: Take precautions during cold weather stays. "Midnight stop to rest for a few hours. Basic, small setup for RVs. We used the electricity hookup, but it was too cold for us to hookup to water," shares Megan about Kansas Country Inn & RV Park.

Layout awareness: Some RV areas place units close together. "The campers are right next to each other. They are arranged in groups of four around the central utility area," explains Mary L. about Kansas Country Inn & RV Park.
