      Chase State Fishing Lake

We Didn’t Even Give Kansas a Chance

On our road-trip to Utah, we dreaded having to camp in Kansas, until a friend recommended this spot. This stunning little lake is a free site with plenty of fire rings right next to a road. PERFECT car camping. And even has a clean little bathroom. Stunning views of rolling hills and cattle. Places to fish. A little trail that leads up a small hill. Stunning stunning stunning views of wildflowers and rolling hills. Great sunrise and sunset views! Phenomenal place to stop if you’re driving through Kansas. A bit of a detour from I-70, but totally worth it.

      Love's RV Stop-McPherson KS 608

      Perfect overnight stop

Super clean with lots of amenities; dog park, basketball, pickleball, frisbee, grills, covered picnic tables, large and very sturdy concrete tornado shelter (had to use it through a storm with 100mph gusts because…well…. when in Kansas!), showers and bathrooms on site also. All sites are ENORMOUS, level, well lit, and full hookup. Definitely stay here while passing through. Only drawback is no shade and it took HOURS to cool travel trailer down.

      USI RV Park

      Clean but tightly packed

The small park is located in a commercial area but has fairly close access to downtown Wichita. It does have a small dog park and playground set an is good enough for a overnight visit.

      Deer Grove RV Park

Very friendly and helpful staff! Well maintained park!

The park was clean and friendly.  I loved the dog park so I could let my pups run free.  The laundry facility was very helpful so i didnt have to travel to find one.  There was free wifi in the park as well, which my kids loved.  There is a very pretty pond area on the property, with very nice walking trails.  Wichita, KS is very close by with lots of fun things to do.  Enjoyed my time there, will def stay there again if back in the area!

Great place to stay over in Wichita

Close to everywhere, flat gravel sites, friendly owners and employees, full hookups, nice dog park and kid's playground. We travel through Wichita frequently and are happy to have found a place to stay overnight or longer when needed.

      Deer Grove RV Park

      Good stop over…

But not really scenic. Very little grass mostly gravel. Did have a dog park that was convenient. Wi-Fi was a bit tricky and we couldn’t connect our smart tv

      KOA Campground Salina

      Great stop, family friendly!

KOA did not disappoint here. Right off the highway, there is some road noise but for someone passing through it was great because it didn’t add more miles to our trip. We have a 5th wheel so with the AC running at night we didn’t hear the road noise.

Spots are wide enough to allow space and not on top of neighbors. We got a deluxe patio site. Very convenient so we did not have to pull out are grill and outdoor furniture for just an overnight stay. Had a fire pit and gas grill (that was remarkably clean and had all clean utensils inside for grilling!)

The store has fresh pizza and ice cream available, as well as some small grocery needs, and there is a big selection for Rv accessories/parts.

The kids loved the pool. There are 2 pools one circular one 3ft on sides 6 in the center. And a smaller rectangle one that is a kiddie pool. My son is 40 inches and he could touch the entire length. They have a gator pulling train cart, pedal carts, a jumping pad, basketball hoops that are adjustable and an outdoor ping pong table. Also a playground that could use some updates. And a fenced in dog park.

Overall a great stop for one night, and if I ever find myself driving through Kansas again I will definitely stay again.

Walt's Four Seasons Campground & Country Store

      Perfect Family E

I am thrilled with the amenities at this campground. The Wifi works great, especially after this is the first time I had wifi since leaving home. The pool, fishpond, kids playground, nature trail, and dog park are just some of the amenities. We all had some sandwiches made for us while we checked in. The bathroom and shower were exceptionally clean. My only concerns are the electric pedestal had a bulge below the socket, which wouldn't fit my surge protector. My electric went out, and I had to reset the breaker. I would have felt better knowing my surge protector was usable. Abilene, the boyhood home of President Eisenhower was right up the road and worth a visit.

    Guide to Marion

Marion Reservoir, situated at approximately 1,350 feet elevation in central Kansas, serves as the hub for pet friendly camping near Marion. The reservoir spans roughly 6,200 acres with a 60-mile shoreline offering multiple camping options. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-95°F with humidity levels reaching 60-80% during peak camping season from May through September.

    What to do

Fishing from personal jetties: At Chase State Fishing Lake, campers can fish directly from their sites. "Each site has its own little jetty to fish off of, a picnic table and a fire pit. Water was clean and pretty fishy," notes Steve M., making it convenient for anglers to set up camp with direct lake access.

Wildlife observation: The area provides opportunities to spot local wildlife throughout the day. "I was able to sit out there in the evening and watch the fish splash and listen to the birds and later, the coyotes," writes Chris P. about Chase State Fishing Lake. Many campsites offer unobstructed views for animal watching.

Basketball and active recreation: Harvey County East Park features basketball courts alongside other recreational facilities. "There is a nice swimming area that has life jackets hanging in case you forgot yours, showers, a playground, boat docks, day use areas, and basketball courts," according to Shannon G., providing options beyond water activities.

    What campers like

Secluded camping spots: French Creek Cove offers quieter camping experiences. "Very nice spots, it is a cove off of the main lake nestled way back of the main," writes papa T., noting its separation from busier areas despite a "very dusty dirt road getting here."

Fall foliage viewing: The trees around Harvey County East Park provide seasonal color displays. "The lake was beautiful, the trees were still pretty full with fall foliage, and it was very quiet," mentions Leann V., highlighting the visual appeal during autumn months.

Star gazing opportunities: The minimal light pollution creates excellent night sky viewing. "This is a wonderful campground if you're into star gazing as there is zero light pollution," reports Jason R. about Chase State Fishing Lake, making it ideal for astronomy enthusiasts.

    What you should know

Varied road conditions: Access roads to some camping areas require careful driving. "The road is a little rough, but it's a neat place," explains 1life1try about French Creek Cove, suggesting smaller vehicles might navigate more easily.

Water hookup restrictions: Some campgrounds have specific water usage rules. "The water hookups are shared between sites and currently have signs reading, '15 MINUTE TIME LIMIT. Do Not Leave Water Hose Connected, Even If You Have A Splitter,'" reports Meghan B. about Harvey County East Park.

Site selection considerations: Campsite layouts vary significantly across locations. "The layout of the fire rings, grills and picnic tables are all weird... Not consistent and usually on the wrong side of your trailer. The parking pad was nowhere near level, so you'll want to plan for that," advises Tracy N. about Boulder Bluff Area.

    Tips for camping with families

Sandy beaches for children: McPherson State Fishing Lake offers family-friendly swimming spots. "Sandy beaches at most of the tent campsites are our favorite things about this lake! Also, super affordable camping," notes Anika L., mentioning cost savings for family outings.

Playground proximity: Some campgrounds feature playgrounds near tent sites. "We usually stay on the Walnut River side as there is a large playground with tent sites close enough to keep an eye on the kiddos," suggests Kara S., making supervision easier while camping with children.

Life jacket availability: Safety equipment is provided at certain swimming areas. "There is a nice swimming area that has life jackets hanging in case you forgot yours," mentions Shannon G., reducing the need to pack bulky safety gear for water activities.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling preparation: Boulder Bluff Area requires equipment for leveling. "The parking pad was nowhere near level, so you'll want to plan for that," warns Tracy N., suggesting RVers bring adequate leveling blocks or jacks.

Dump station alternatives: When campground facilities are unavailable, look for nearby options. "We used the city of El Dorado dump station," shares Tracy N., providing a practical solution for RVers needing this service.

Size-appropriate campground selection: Choose campgrounds based on your RV size. "Shorter RV trailers are preferred" at French Creek Cove according to 1life1try, while the boat dock at this location is described as "very steep, small boats only," indicating limitations for larger equipment.
