    Very Nice But Noisy

This is a nice campground with pull-through spots, playground, nice washroom/showers. Some spots even have concrete patios with fire pits and grills. A few tiny cabins and a “glamping” tent. The only negative is that the sites are very close together and it is right off I-70 which is very noisy all night long.

Bed bugs!!! Don’t rent Cabin 5 Larkspur

I’m exhausted, the last 12hrs has been a dumpster fire. Last thing we expected was a bed bug infestation. Woke at midnight with a few annoying bites, on further inspection we were covered in bed bugs, urrrgghh. After picking them off our pj’s and getting over the initial shock we went home to quarantine our clothes, shower and sleep. Returned in the morning to checkout and trash our sleeping bags and pillows. Everyone is disappointed, and I’m out of pocket for 2 nights accommodation and 4x sleeping gear...whoever the host is should be ashamed of themselves, I’m trying to warn the next people, this cabin is booked solid but in reality uninhabitable! The porch is also infested with burrowing bumblebees, scary for kids and adults alike.

    KOA Campground Salina

    Great stop, family friendly!

KOA did not disappoint here. Right off the highway, there is some road noise but for someone passing through it was great because it didn’t add more miles to our trip. We have a 5th wheel so with the AC running at night we didn’t hear the road noise.

Spots are wide enough to allow space and not on top of neighbors. We got a deluxe patio site. Very convenient so we did not have to pull out are grill and outdoor furniture for just an overnight stay. Had a fire pit and gas grill (that was remarkably clean and had all clean utensils inside for grilling!)

The store has fresh pizza and ice cream available, as well as some small grocery needs, and there is a big selection for Rv accessories/parts.

The kids loved the pool. There are 2 pools one circular one 3ft on sides 6 in the center. And a smaller rectangle one that is a kiddie pool. My son is 40 inches and he could touch the entire length. They have a gator pulling train cart, pedal carts, a jumping pad, basketball hoops that are adjustable and an outdoor ping pong table. Also a playground that could use some updates. And a fenced in dog park.

Overall a great stop for one night, and if I ever find myself driving through Kansas again I will definitely stay again.

Guide to Marion

Cabin camping near Marion, Kansas offers visitors access to reservable accommodations across several state parks and private campgrounds. Located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas with rolling prairies and elevations ranging from 1,200 to 1,500 feet, this area experiences hot summers and cold winters. Most cabin options require advanced reservations, particularly during peak season from May through September when temperatures regularly exceed 90°F.

What to do

Fishing at McPherson Lake: McPherson State Fishing Lake offers primitive camping with access to good fishing spots. "Awsome fishing lake, wild bison a mile or 2 down the road. Very nice camp spots with electrical hookups up on a hill and primitive down by the water," notes Papa T.

Swimming and recreation: Several cabin locations provide swimming options during summer months. At Salina Campground, "Kids enjoyed the basketball court, playground, and swimming pool. Clean bathroom/showers," according to Amy T. Swimming beaches at state parks may have seasonal closures based on water conditions.

Outdoor games: Many cabin areas include various recreation options. "The kids loved the pool. There are 2 pools one circular one 3ft on sides 6 in the center. And a smaller rectangle one that is a kiddie pool. They have a gator pulling train cart, pedal carts, a jumping pad, basketball hoops that are adjustable and an outdoor ping pong table," describes Nicole C. about KOA Campground Salina.

What campers like

Privacy and lake views: Waterfront cabins offer peaceful settings away from crowds. "Free camping on a lake with tables, fire rings, some have shade, vaulted toilets. Quiet but close to a little town," shares DeAnn M. about McPherson State Fishing Lake.

Accessibility for quick stops: Cabins near main highways provide convenient overnight options. "Very friendly check in. Full hook ups. Clean laundry room. Playground for the little ones. Right off the highway so the noise is expected but it's a good price for a safe stop," notes Joey M. about Salina Campground.

Clean facilities: Modern cabin areas maintain good bathroom facilities. "The bathrooms available on site are mainly vault toilets however in the camp there are some improvements," explains Crystal C. about West Rolling Hills. "Gravel sites. Great, robust WIFI. Clean, modern bathrooms and showers," adds Dave D. about cabin options at Spring Lake.

What you should know

Road noise considerations: Highway-adjacent cabin sites offer convenience but come with traffic sounds. "Convenient location along I-70 meant lots of highway noise. My kids loved the ping pong, basketball, inflatable jump pad, old metal playground and outdoor pool," mentions Blair about Salina KOA.

Reservation requirements: Most cabin locations require advance planning. "We tent camped here and enjoyed our stay. The food, pizza, was excellent. The staff brought our order to our site," shares Julie W. about KOA Campground Salina, where cabin reservations should be made 2-3 weeks in advance during summer.

Cabin condition varies: Quality and cleanliness of cabins differs between locations. "This area looks fabulous. I was looking forward to staying here in early November, but it was closed. All the Corps campgrounds close for the winter," notes Mimi about West Rolling Hills, highlighting the importance of checking seasonal availability.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Choose cabins near play areas for children. "The kids loved the pool. There are 2 pools one circular one 3ft on sides 6 in the center. And a smaller rectangle one that is a kiddie pool," describes Nicole C. about KOA Campground Salina.

Budget-friendly options: State park cabins often cost less than private resorts. "There's quite a few spot to camp. All primitive. Can get a little busy during the day on the weekend but there are some great spots up in the trees away from the water that stay pretty quiet," explains Matthew G. about McPherson State Fishing Lake.

On-site food options: Some cabin locations offer meal services. "We tent camped here and enjoyed our stay. The food, pizza, was excellent. The staff brought our order to our site. We enjoyed a swim in the pool to cool off due to the temperature being in mid 90's," shares Julie W. about KOA Campground Salina.

Tips from RVers

Hookup differences: Cabin areas with RV sites vary in utility access. "The sites were level and spacious. We will definitely be back," notes Todd P. about El Dorado State Park's Bluestem Point Area cabins, which offer varying levels of hookups.

Site spacing: Some cabin locations provide more room between sites than others. "Close to everywhere, flat gravel sites, friendly owners and employees, full hookups, nice dog park and kid's playground," comments Bonnie A. about USI RV Park, noting the convenience for overnight stays.

Off-season considerations: Winter cabin options may be limited. "This area looks fabulous. I was looking forward to staying here in early November, but it was closed. All the Corps campgrounds close for the winter," cautions Mimi about seasonal closures at West Rolling Hills.
