Best Campgrounds near Manhattan, KS

Tuttle Creek State Park anchors the camping landscape around Manhattan, Kansas, with multiple campgrounds including River Pond, Rocky Ford, and Riley Point offering a mix of tent, RV, and cabin accommodations. The region includes both established state park facilities with full hookups and more primitive options like Pottawatomie County State Lake #2, which provides free camping with basic amenities. Most campgrounds feature water access, with Tuttle Creek Lake serving as a central recreation point approximately 7 miles north of downtown Manhattan. Several sites accommodate various camping styles with electric hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings, while others maintain a more rustic experience with vault toilets and minimal facilities.

Seasonal considerations significantly impact camping experiences in the Manhattan area, particularly regarding water levels and site availability. Milford State Park and other lakeside campgrounds can experience flooding during heavy rain seasons, sometimes limiting access to certain loops and campsites. Summer brings higher temperatures and increased demand for waterfront sites, while spring and fall offer milder conditions but occasional storms. Many campgrounds require reservations, especially for electric sites and during peak summer weekends when college students and military personnel from nearby Fort Riley frequent the area. A review noted, "Call ahead before visiting this park as a whole to check conditions. With limited locations for camping currently available you will be happier by checking in advance rather than coming and experiencing being turned away."

Waterfront camping receives consistently high ratings across the Manhattan area, with shaded sites near Tuttle Creek and Milford Lake being particularly sought after. Campers report appreciating the cottonwood trees that provide essential shade during hot Kansas summers. Wildlife viewing opportunities include raccoons, squirrels, and various bird species, though campers should secure food items at night. Several visitors mentioned the peaceful atmosphere of lakeside camping, with one noting, "We stay many weeks during the season at this park and it is the best. Love opening the windows and listening to the water at night. Get a good breeze off the lake also which is a plus in a Kansas summer." Fishing access, hiking trails, and water recreation represent common activities, with boat ramps available at multiple locations. Campgrounds closer to Manhattan tend to be busier, while those farther out offer more seclusion but may have fewer amenities.

    Calvin's RV & Tent Camping

    Calvin's RV

A small RV park on the east edge of Wamego KS. Full electric (30A,50A, and 120V), water, and sanitary dump. Most sites are paved pull through sites. Booking online through Rover Pass was simple and affordable. There is a guest bathroom in the basement of the office building. We were greeted by the owner and the grounds are well maintained and quiet. Just 20 min from Manhattan.

    Smoky Hill RV Park

    Great one night stay

Well-maintained campground. Very close to Highway 70 (you can hear the vehicles) and services (gas, restaurants, Walmart). Ideal for an overnight stay on the road. The sites are long (several large RVs on site), with services and picnic tables on cement patios. No fire pits on the sites (there is one in a common area). Modern bathrooms and showers. Everything is very clean. Laundry room ($0.25 required).

    Pottawatomie State Fishing Lake

    Nice and secluded!

Not many insects, nice and secluded. Beautiful scenery, nice lake. Everything is perfect here. The only thing that make it better is if they had trash cans, potable water and a grey water dump.

    West Rolling Hills

    Wonderful Campground!

The host was very friendly and helpful. The lake is peaceful. The sites are far apart, some have large trees, and all seemed to be by the lake. There are many shower stalls with no need for quarters. We got a site with full hookups at half the regular $24, with a senior pass. All of this for $12! Oh, did I mentioned that we are far from the I-70, with rolling hills and trees? We highly recommend it!

    River Pond State Park Campground

    Great place to stay

Lots of sites. Lots of trees. Small dog park in one corner. Many of the sites are well spread out, but even the close ones are quiet due to the trees absorbing sound. Pull throughs are not too level and services are on the wrong side so make sure your hose and electric cable are long enough. Could never connect to the WiFi. 4g signal was pretty strong. Park does need to label the roads with site numbers. I recommend arriving in daylight to find your spot, as well as researching your location beforehand.

    Rest Area I-70

    Small rest stop

This is a small area, some space for trucks and cars but not many. Restrooms available, big trash can and a non potable water pump.
