Walt's Four Seasons Campground & Country Store

    Exceptional family friendly campground!!

In June of 2023, my husband& I decided to move into our 42' toy hauler. We searched& searched within a 30-minute radius of our property that we had bought for a campground with great amenities and where we would feel safe with our 2 babies. Walt's is by far the safest, friendliest, fun-filled campground compared to any of the others we visited around. We were greeted with friendly faces and welcoming staff from our very first day of move-in. They made sure we got settled& hooked up ok and have continued to make us feel right at home. My husband is a truck driver so isn't always home when things go wrong with the camper. The staff has always been there to help when something happens especially when we have had issues with propane leaks, or the heater not working during the colder temps. This campground offers put-put course, swimming pool with poolside pub, horseshoes, catch& release fishing, walking trail, small dog park, playground for children, shower houses/restrooms, laundry facility, on site gas station, a country store with made to order pizzas, sandwiches& tex mex! They do several family friendly events throughout the year. At the country store they have anything of convenience that you may need from toiletries, drinks, snacks, ice cream, games, books, alcoholic beverages, etc. We absolutely love staying here. The sites have been freshly graveled. During the summer the lawn, gardens, pool, etc. Were maintained regularly and they are constantly doing updates weekly here. The best part it is also right off I-70. For long term campers that are truckers they do have a small area for semis. They also have a rentable party room inside the country store as well as outdoor areas for party rentals!

    Canning Creek

Not a bad site in the entire campground!

General: Canning Creek is one of six camping areas operated by the US Army Corp of Engineers on Council Grove Lake. It is spread out on the lake so that all but four sites- 24, 26, 27& 28 (and the group camping areas) are directly on the water. Even though there were only a handful of people camping when we were there on a Monday in mid-April, there was an attendant on duty until 8 pm.

Site Quality/Facilities: Most sites have generous concrete pads, some of which could easily accommodate two vehicles, a concrete picnic table (covered by a shelter), a bbq, and a lantern hook. Some sites are reservable and others are not. The rates are very reasonable, as they are for all CoE campgrounds, especially for seniors. All sites have reasonable separation between them. On the map, sites 6-23 look to be very close together but they are reasonably distanced apart. Sites 1-5 (which are not reservable) have very long pull-through drives. All sites (except the group sites) have electric and water and some have 50 amp (these are noted on the map)

Bathhouse: Some loops have vault toilets (which were very clean), some have flush toilets, and some have flush toilet/shower combos. None have soap dispensers. We were in site 46 with access to one of the combos. I appreciated the hot water, especially since we woke to snow the next morning! Sites 1-23 have a vault toilet but there is a flush facility within reasonable walking distance.

Activities/Amenities: Swimming, fishing, and boating in season but we were passing through, so we did not participate. Minimal playground facilities (mostly in the loop with sites 1-23) and horseshoe pits. There was a hiking trail, but I did not explore it.

We always have a good experience at a CoE campground – they are well run, clean, affordable and, of course, located on or near water. My only beef is that check-in time is 6 pm, although if it is not crowded, you could check in earlier.

Rocky Ford Campground — Tuttle Creek State Park

    Rocky Ford campground space 141

Very shady, right off the water. A little steep to actually get to the waters edge. Fire rings with grills and picnic table. Lantern hook with water and 30 & 50 amp electric hookups. Back in spot would be a little tight for a bigger travel trailer but not bad.

    Richey Cove

    Love it!

Very cute place. Quiet. Just hear the birds. They have fire pits. Pets are allowed. They have nice paved spots with water and electrical hookup. ( 30/50) Comes with picnic table and shelter. Has a charcoal swiveling grill, good size with a lid! Fishing. Boating. Shower/ bathroom on sight. Garbage cans close by. We will definitely be back with family and friends! Have long term campsites and short term. Go to recreation.gov for fast and easy sign in and go!

    River Pond State Park Campground

    Nice State Park

The is a nice clean Kansas State Park. Lots of shady spots. Easy access to walking trails and water activities. Fire pits and picnic tables at every site. Most sites are only water and electric. There are only a half dozen or so full hook up sites and they are generally always full during camping season. There are two dump stations on site. This park is close to home for us and we camp here often.

    Mill creek campground

    Charming Campground with Railroad History

This is a charming little campground, and I do not use the word“charming” often. It is charming because it has so many quaint relics of the past, including the town itself. At the entrance to the campground, there is a building covered with old signs, hubcaps, etc. As a photographer, I couldn’t be happier to have the opportunity begin taking pictures immediately. As we drove down the road to our campsite, we came across such oddities as a bicycle halfway up a windmill, an old original train depot with an antique threshing machine next to it, and more. The campsites are flat and fairly spacious. We were lucky that the campground was not at full capacity because many of the sites are in pairs. Our pull-through site was within inches of the adjacent pull-through site. Although there was no picnic table at our site, we could have used one on the adjacent site, and we brought our own table. The site did have a fire pit, but we arrived late and didn’t have time to worry about getting wood. There are seasonal and permanent campers at the campground, and you have to reserve early during peak seasons. I talked to one person at the campground and he said that it was booked up one time when he wanted to stay. Although the site we got was gravel and pull-through, there are sites without power by the creek, in case you want to tent camp or just don’t need hookups. The bath house was clean, and the owner told me that it is sanitized every day. The shower stalls are spacious and there is hot water. There is a playground for kids and activities for older people—basketball, corn hole, etc. The only drawback is that you can hear trains passing through during the night about three or four times. It didn’t bother me since I love the sound of trains, but it does wake you up since the tracks are so close to the campground. The town is within walking distance of the campground, and it is worth walking(or driving) to it. The buildings are interesting architecturally, and the town is known for antiques. Overall, I really liked this campground. It may not have all of the amenities of the larger campgrounds, but it is quiet(except for the trains) and peaceful.

    Canning Creek

Small, quiet COE on the lake

This is a small park - 43 reservable sites with electric and water hookups. Most sites face the water and are shaded. They have fire pits and a covered cerment picnic table. Sites are fairly level and good size with a gravel pad. It is a very nice campground

    Stockdale

    Secluded ACOE Campground

Well maintained, gravel sites with good electric and water hookups. Dump station also provided attached hose to allow black tank flush. Verizon cell service and digital TV signal were strong. Visited Manhattan, KS and Oz Museum in Wamego, KS. Plenty to do in the area and this campground provided a nice, secluded base. Boat ramps available to allow access to Kansas’ 2nd largest lake.

Guide to Junction City

Junction City's RV camping options sit within the Flint Hills region of Kansas, near the northeastern shores of Milford Lake at approximately 1,140 feet elevation. The area experiences four distinct seasons with hot summers regularly exceeding 90°F and cold winters that can drop below 20°F. Camping facilities around Junction City operate primarily from April through October, though several RV sites near Junction City, Kansas remain open year-round with reduced amenities during winter months.

What to do

Fishing access: 15-minute drive to Milford Lake from most Junction City campsites. Acorn RV Resort offers direct lake access with fishing docks. "A very beautiful lake, this area is pristine clean and water clear. A very large lake with many areas of camping and fishing," notes papa T.

Presidential history: 20-minute drive to Abilene's Eisenhower Presidential Library from Junction City campgrounds. Covered Wagon RV Resort provides convenient access. As one camper explains: "It's just down the street from President Dwight D Eisenhower presidential museum and library... If you get the chance visit the early 1900's wooden Carousel and old Abilene historic buildings."

Beach recreation: 5-minute walk from camping areas at West Rolling Hills. "The main draw to this area is the swimming beach which is the best of the parks offerings with sandy bars and well maintained grassy areas for shade," reports a visitor, though recent flooding has affected swimming conditions.

What campers like

Clean, modern facilities: Smoky Hill RV Park maintains updated bath facilities. "Well-maintained campground... Modern bathrooms and showers. Everything is very clean. Laundry room ($0.25 required)," according to Martin-Charles S., who appreciates the campground's cleanliness standards.

Lakefront camping options: Sites with water views available at multiple campgrounds. "Many lakefront sites, scenic & quiet. Very windy during our stay. A great place to just come & relax," shares Bob M. about his experience at West Rolling Hills.

Family activities beyond camping: Walt's Four Seasons Campground offers extensive recreation options. "This campground offers put-put course, swimming pool with poolside pub, horseshoes, catch & release fishing, walking trail, small dog park, playground for children," reports Courtney P., noting the family-friendly environment.

What you should know

Seasonal closures affect planning: Corps of Engineer campgrounds close completely in winter. "All the Corps campgrounds close for the winter. This info was not on their website, so I drove out there," shares one camper about West Rolling Hills, cautioning winter travelers to verify operating dates.

Highway noise varies by location: Some campgrounds experience road noise due to proximity to I-70. "Very close to Highway 70 (you can hear the vehicles) and services (gas, restaurants, Walmart)," notes a reviewer about Smoky Hill RV Park.

Weekend atmosphere changes: Flagstop Resort and RV experiences significant shifts in noise levels between weekdays and weekends. "Was not crowded at all throughout the whole week but gets crazy on the weekend with people loud and partying until 1am or so," reports Tamisha S.

Tips for camping with families

All-inclusive recreation: Walt's Four Seasons provides comprehensive options for children. "We absolutely love staying here... They do several family friendly events throughout the year," explains Courtney P., highlighting the convenience for parents not wanting to leave the campground for entertainment.

Playground access for different ages: Multiple playgrounds available at varying difficulty levels. "There is an older playground near the boat ramp and a much nicer and newer one located closest to the larger parking area and largest pavilion," mentions a visitor about West Rolling Hills.

Educational opportunities: Use camping as a base for historical learning. "Check out the The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad heritage railway. Ride the Flint Hills Express on track built by the Rock Island Railroad in 1886!" suggests Cande D. from Covered Wagon RV Resort.

Tips from RVers

Site spacing considerations: RV parking areas vary significantly in privacy levels between campgrounds. Calvin's RV & Tent Camping offers "paved pull through sites" that are well-maintained according to Zach L., who found the "grounds are well maintained and quiet."

Electrical pedestal compatibility: Check power connections before committing to sites. "My only concerns are the electric pedestal had a bulge below the socket, which wouldn't fit my surge protector. My electric went out, and I had to reset the breaker," cautions Paul B. about Walt's Four Seasons.

Seasonal site preparation: RV campers should prepare for weather conditions. "The sites have been freshly graveled," notes Courtney P. about Walt's Four Seasons, an important consideration during Kansas's rainy seasons when mud can be problematic for larger rigs.
