    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Several RV parks near Monticello provide full-service options for travelers. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Monticello offers big rig friendly sites with 50-amp electric, sewer, and water hookups, operating from April 15 to October 15. Beyonder Getaway at Lazy Acres features 96 RV sites with both 30 and 50-amp service options on level gravel pads. "Well run campground with full hookups available for $35/night. Bathrooms are clean and lots of warm water for showers," notes one visitor about Lazy Acres. Just west of Monticello, Amana RV Park & Event Center provides spacious pull-through sites that accommodate larger motorhomes with full hookups, including 50-amp service during their April to October season.

Advanced reservations are recommended for weekend stays, particularly during summer months. Most parks offer sanitary dump stations, though Wapsipinicon State Park requires using the dump facility in Monticello, approximately 10 miles from Anamosa. Cell service varies throughout the region, with limited coverage in more rural areas. Pets are generally welcome at most RV parks, with Porth RV Park in Calamus offering basic pull-in sites with water and electric connections but no fire rings. According to reviews, several campgrounds have unlevel sites that may require leveling blocks or stabilizers. Winter camping options are limited, as most parks close between late October and early April due to seasonal weather conditions in eastern Iowa.

      Little Bear Campground

Cozy I-80 Oasis with Full Hookups and Flashback Vibes

I’m following up on my review from over a year ago with fresh details, some new pics and a topline summary of HIGHLIGHTS and LOWLIGHTS:

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Full-hookup pull-through RV sites with 30 / 50 amp electric power, water, and sewer; (2) Dust-free gravel pads and flat grass spots, perfect for quick setups or longer rests with no leveling hassles; (3) Amenities galore: hot showers, clean restrooms, laundry, dump station, even a game room and refreshing pool (during warmer weather); (4) Friendly, helpful owner (Mike) on call 24/7, even for late arrivals– trust me, genuine hospitality in the middle of nowhere; and (5) Quiet enough to hear crickets, yet close enough to I-80 for that satisfying highway convenience without the roar

LOWLIGHTS: (1) Kiddie pool energy during peak season where the playground and pool are great for families, but can feel like summer camp at times; (2) Tiny tent sites clustered against cornfields with those looking for solitude may feel a little too close for comfort; (3) Not a wilderness escape for nature seekers, but more ‘pampered road stop’ than ‘forest retreat’; (4) No reservations online: you have to call or Facebook-message Mike for a spot, which works until your cell signal doesn’t; and (5) Lacks thematic glamour overall, as it’s both friendly and functional, but it won’t win any camping ambiance awards.

      Happy Camping!

      Linder Point Campground

Well designed and maintained small RV campground j

Natural setting with plenty of trees and located near Coralville Reservoir. Paved roads and sites. Ample roam for big rigs, but no pull through sites. Electricity only, with fresh water and a dump station nearby. Modern and clean bathhouse. Open sky at most sites for Starlink. No other amenities at this campsite for children, but there are hiking trails and activities at the nearby reservoir recreation areas.

      West Overlook Campground

Amazing Iowa stop for 2 nights

On our way across the state and was concerned about needing power. Was able to find 1 spot for 2 nights only a day early. Very popular place. E/W with dump station in the campground. Water access by beach and boat. Next to the dam on lake side. Spacious sites. Well maintained. Concrete pad with picnic table and fire pit. Close to town if needing shopping.

      Rustic Barn Campground RV Park

      Very clean and well-maintained

General: 58 sites with various amenities. Some are long pull-throughs, some are back-in, some have 30 amp with or without a patio, and some have 50-amp electric with or without a patio. Tents are NOT allowed. We were greeted immediately upon arrival and asked to sign a waiver and given a welcome packet. The rules are extensive, but most are common sense/courtesy and not at all unreasonable.

Site Quality: All had gravel driveways and looked level. Decent separation between sites although they are close together, as would be expected in an RV park. Our site had a patio and decent-sized picnic table but it was chilly when we were there so we ate inside.

Bathhouse: Very clean as were the showers.

Activities/Amenities: There are many activities offered, including a dog park, basketball, horseshoes, games (cornhole, large checkerboard, and others), a barn with a television, a book library, puzzles, and a pool table. Coffee is available after 9 am. There is also a small chapel available 24/7 and a laundry room. WiFi is also available. There is a camp store with ice, ice cream, some camping supplies, clothing, crafts, and more. We were told several restaurants will deliver to the campground.

We don’t typically prefer to stay in RV-style campgrounds, but it was conveniently located with easy access off Route 151 just over the Wisconsin border from Iowa, we were warmly welcomed, and enjoyed our short stay passing through. Pride of ownership was evident throughout.

      Mud Lake County Park

Beautiful park on Miss River. Great value

Mud Lake is a wonderful county park near Dubuque. Beautiful views of the Mississippi River. We stayed one night on our way to Minnesota. The sites are mostly sunny. The park streets are gravel with gravel sites. The park is quiet except for the occasional train from the nearby tracks. Great value for $21. Electric and water hookups. Marina and boathouse next door.

Stayed in campsite #35 which has no shade. It was a gravel site which shares a pull-through with site 36. There was more than enough parking for my TT and truck and grass on either side. The site included: picnic table and fire ring. Utilities were located in the rear. 20A/50A electric and water. Site was level. Neighbors were nearby.

AT&T had 2 bars of LTE and Verizon 2 bars of LTE service. AT&T Speedtest: 47 Mbps down, 1.3 Mbps up. Verizon data VERY SLOW. No WiFi.

Would stay here again. We camped at Mud Lake Park in a Travel Trailer.

      Beyonder Getaway at Sleepy Hollow

Friendly Pondside Camp Stone’s Throw from I-80

I’m following up on my review from over a year ago with updated feedback, some additional pics and a quick summary of HIGHLIGHTS and LOWLIGHTS.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) The campground offers full-hookup RV sites, including pull-throughs and back-ins, along with tent and cabin options that altogether works for a wide range of camping styles; (2) The atmosphere is very family-oriented, with play areas for kids, golf cart rentals, weekend activities and even a communal fire pit near the pond; (3) Amenities are plentiful, with laundry, a small on-site store, free WiFi, kid’s playground, horseshoe pits, a basketball court and plans for a pool; (4) The views are attractive, with sunsets over the pond that create an easygoing, picture-perfect backdrop for evening campfires and s’mores; and (5) The park is Good Sam verified, has a history of positive impressions, and promotes eco-friendly practices.

LOWLIGHTS: (1) There are definitely sites that are uneven or in a few cases, poorly maintained, requiring extra leveling work or creative parking to get set up properly; (2) A few of the facilities feel worn down, with issues like broken water hookups, muddy access points or bathrooms that could use more attention; (3) Inconsistency of maintenance and site quality – sometimes it just depends upon what day of the week you show up to find out whether or not things are organized and in good condition; (4) The beach area near the pond is not especially inviting, as it can be covered in goose and duck doo-doo, which detracts from the idea of relaxing at the shoreline; and (5) Reservations are handled by phone rather than online, which works for some people, but I find it inconvenient and very 1983.

      Happy Camping!

    Guide to Monticello

Monticello camping areas offer distinct experiences across eastern Iowa. Located in Jones County at approximately 850 feet elevation, the region experiences warm summers with average highs of 83°F and cold winters averaging 28°F. Most campgrounds operate from mid-April through October due to seasonal weather patterns, with cellular reception varying significantly between riverside locations and more developed RV parks.

    What to do

Water recreation opportunities: Spruce Creek Park provides Mississippi River access with fishing and boating options. "I took my children here for years when they were little. As a single mom of 5 it was very manageable. I could see them throughout the entire park. There's fishing, exploring, a playground, and when you see a paddleboat you have time to drive to town before it hits loch & damn #12," notes one visitor.

Historical exploration: The Amana Colonies are accessible from several area campgrounds. "We used our bikes and biked around the colonies. Place was clean, showers and bathroom great. We were there after Labor Day and had section to our selves," shares a camper who stayed at Amana RV Park & Event Center.

Cave exploration: Several campers mention visiting nearby cave systems. "There are some amazing caves at a state park near by and not to mention all the things to do in Dubuque," reports a visitor at Rustic Barn Campground.

    What campers like

River views and fishing: Off Shore RV Park offers direct Mississippi River access. "Resort has many options: even camp sites, 4 villas, resort inn rooms. Sites have hard surfaces, fire rings, water, electric. Boat ramp nearby, resort has restaurant, playground, water park," notes one camper.

Kid-friendly activities: Many campgrounds feature dedicated recreation areas. "This place had so much! They had a little train ride, miniature golf course, catch and release fishing in their pond, splash pad, lots of cool things hand built structures to see as well," writes a visitor about Beyonder Getaway at Lazy Acres.

Stargazing opportunities: Open sites at some RV parks provide excellent night sky viewing. "We had an incredible, undisrupted view of the stars at night which thrilled my daughter who brought a small telescope, and plenty of open space for running without disrupting other campers," mentions a camper at Amana RV Park.

    What you should know

Train noise considerations: Several campgrounds near railways experience regular train traffic. "Not the worst but not one of the best COE campgrounds. No nice gravel or concrete pads anywhere. Many sites are not real level. Biggest issue is train tracks with trains running by very often," reports a camper at Blanding Landing.

Site leveling requirements: Multiple reviews mention uneven sites. "Our site 26 seemed to be the most in level, which was our only negative. We had to use all our blocks to get us as level as possible," notes a visitor to Rustic Barn Campground.

Limited shade at newer facilities: Several rv campgrounds near Monticello, Iowa are relatively new and lack mature tree cover. "Camp ground wide open feel, because not many large trees yet. Enjoyed our stay there," mentions a camper at Amana RV Park.

Highway proximity: Some campgrounds experience road noise. "It is right off the highway, so it was loud when we were outside, but we couldn't hear it at all when we were in our Tab 400," reports a visitor at Cedar River Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Choose campgrounds with recreation facilities: Beyonder Getaway at Lazy Acres offers multiple family activities. "Great owners, loads of stuff for kids (putt putt, paddle boats, horseshoes, basketball, Gaga, trampoline, playground). Near the highway so it has truck noise," writes one family camper.

Consider accessibility needs: Some Monticello area RV parks have adaptive facilities. "My daughter is in a wheelchair so we requested the accessible site. It's right next to the showers with an adapted pic-nic table and raised fire pit!" reports a visitor to Beyonder Getaway.

Visit during spring or fall: Summer weekends at Monticello campgrounds can be crowded. "We were there after Labor Day and had section to our selves," notes one camper about their experience at Amana RV Park.

    Tips from RVers

Verify hookup availability: Monticello area RV parks offer varying electric service. "Utilities all worked fine, decently maintained. Non-camper traffic is annoying (event center inside CG), lots of people well above posted 10 mph limit," shares an RVer about Amana RV Park.

Consider site spacing: RV campgrounds in Monticello have different site configurations. "All had gravel driveways and looked level. Decent separation between sites although they are close together, as would be expected in an RV park," notes a visitor to Rustic Barn Campground.

Monitor weather impacts: Gravel surfaces can become challenging during rain. "The down sides of the park were that the roads and pads are gravel so I could see it becoming an issue during weather but we didn't have much trouble leveling," explains an RVer at Amana RV Park.
