    Howell Station

    One of our favorites

This is a really nice campground. It’s run by friendly, helpful people. It’s well maintained, the bathrooms are clean, you’re not packed together like sardines, there’s a nice bike/walking trail around the park and (at least when we’ve visited) bald eagles, blue herons and pelicans line the river. It’s just a little over an hour from us so it’s easy to get to.

We’re trying parks all over Iowa and Howell has been one of our favorites.

    Howell Station

    Laid-back Campground

This campground has great facilities with spacious sites. We have plenty of space for our dogs on two stakes. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table. There are large trees that provide a lot of shade for the campground. There are play grounds for the kids. It is along a river for fishing and bird watching.

Island View Campground — Lake Rathbun

    Island View Campground

Pretty nice campground with showers/restrooms/dump stations spread throughout the campground. Tons a room between spots and lots of sites with a good view of the lake. Our site has a nice view but isn’t too close. I would aim for one of the M spots if you want closer. There is a ramp for boats and a beach. Overall really great place to stay especially if you like the water

    Wallashuck

    Large well layed out campgrounds

Campsites are well spaced, some have good views of the lake. Men’s bathroom is clean, showers have good hot water but could use a deep cleaning. Bike trail. Very quite when we stayed there.

    Updog RV & Camping

    TERRIBLE

Worst place I have stayed in my 6 years of traveling as an RN. Yes, they had shade.  Made cell service very hard to receive. ONLY other thing they has was geese and fishing.  No picnic table, no firepits. I had a 30amp space. With slide out on each side, and not superslides either, I had EXACTLY 1 foot left on each side of my slides. I could not put out my awning as it would hit the camper next to me. No zero space behind camper as it went to a steep slope from my spare wheel. If I walked behind camper, I had to hang on to spare wheel or fall down the slope. Barely enough room in from of camper to park pickup at an angle.  I have never seen anything like this place before.  And hope I never do.  Pictures you see of campground are SO VERY MUCH deceiving !!!!!. I rate it a one star only because it will not allow me to go any lower.

    Lake Showme Campsites

    Nice spot, lots of activity

Great spot, $20 for RVs and campers. Free if primitive camping. All spots have power and water. Waste and sewage dump can be found on campgrounds. One showering station on grounds. Bathrooms within walking distance. Even have a pistol and rifle range. Bathrooms could be cleaned more, but only complaint.

What you should know

Reservation needs: Weekend camping during summer months typically requires advance planning. Popular sites with lake views fill quickly, particularly at Ottumwa City Park and Lake Wapello State Park.

Weather considerations: The area experiences typical Midwestern seasonal patterns with hot summers and cold winters. Spring camping may encounter rain and mud. One camper noted, "Stayed for a week in mid November. Although we had a storm at the beginning and end the overall stay was great. Weather ranged from 50s to 70s during the day and 30s to 40s at night."

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: RV camping options vary significantly between locations. Honey Creek State Park offers full hookups at some sites, but other areas have limited or no utility connections.

Site levelness: Most established campgrounds provide relatively level parking pads. At Honey Creek State Park, "If we parked in the direction to utilize the full hookups we would have had our awning out over our neighbors campsite," showing the importance of site selection.

Dump station access: Not all campgrounds with RV sites include sanitary dump stations. Lake Wapello State Park does provide this amenity, while some smaller campgrounds require using facilities at other locations.

Seasonal considerations: RVers should note many campground water systems shut down during colder months. One visitor to Lacey Keosauqua reported winter rates of "$23 site without water, $28 w/ water, $35 full hookups," reflecting seasonal service variations.
