Central Iowa camping sites offer a diverse landscape of prairies and wooded areas with elevations ranging from 850 to 950 feet above sea level. The Raccoon River watershed shapes much of the terrain near Cumming, creating opportunities for riverside camping from April through October. Summer temperatures typically range from 60-90°F with higher humidity levels during July and August.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Cherry Glen Campground provides direct lake access with multiple fishing spots. "Clean quiet lots of wildlife. Love this it's close to the city yet feel so far away," notes one camper at Cherry Glen.
Hiking trails: Jester County Park maintains several miles of woodland paths connecting camping areas. "There is a sweet pond to fish in, several hiking trails, a brand new (opened August 2018) Nature Center, amphitheater, bison and bird viewing," according to a reviewer.
Historical exploration: Winterset City Park offers access to local covered bridges and museums. "The John Wayne museum and downtown are a 20 minute walk away," reports one camper, while another notes "There is a two mile loop that leads you up Clark's Tower where you can see the rolling hills of gorgeous Madison county."
What campers like
Clean facilities: Prairie Flower Recreation Area maintains modern bathrooms despite higher weekend occupancy. "Bathroom facilities are always clean and updated. Sites do have some space for privacy between them," writes one visitor, though they caution about Sunday departure congestion at the dump station.
Spacious sites: Many campgrounds offer larger camping areas with concrete pads. "Spacious campsites with cement pads... The only thing holding it back from 5 stars is no water or sewer onsite," notes a Prairie Flower camper.
Dog friendly campgrounds near Cumming: Yellow Banks County Park provides pet-friendly sites with river access. "Nice quiet campground with the Des Moines river close by for fishing or kayaking. Most of the spots are shaded and well maintained," writes a regular visitor who brings their dog to Yellow Banks.
What you should know
Reservation timing: Most campgrounds fill quickly during summer weekends. At Bob Shelter Recreation Area, "We stopped on a Friday without one, they were booked. We only wanted one night in a tent. They don't have designated tent sites but they have one overflow sight and they let us use it for the night."
Seasonal considerations: Many campgrounds operate from April through October. "If you're traveling through Des Moines, Iowa area; this is the place you will want to camp at! Outstanding facilities, beautiful and tranquil location," states a Timberline visitor, noting its availability during the main camping season.
Weather impacts: Some campgrounds experience flooding during heavy rainfall periods. "Great little campground. Always full. Floods with lots of rain but still great," cautions a Walnut Woods reviewer.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Look for campgrounds with dedicated play areas near campsites. "It sits right next to a park. White rock roads and pads. It has some full hook up sites as well as water and electric sites," writes a Winterset City Park visitor.
Swimming options: Des Moines West KOA Holiday maintains a pool and recreational amenities. "The pool was up and running perfect! They even had a dunk tank which was pretty funny! Cabin was beautiful inside and out," shares a family who stayed there.
Pet-friendly activities: Many campgrounds near Cumming welcome dogs but require leashes. "We stayed at the West Des Moines KOA for the Nationals Softball Tournament for my daughter in July. There were 6 families that stayed there with us. It was so much fun because we were able to all be either on buddy sites together and one had a patio site. The pool was refreshing for the girls and all of the activities kept them busy and having fun!"
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Check specific campground utility options before booking. "Now open year round...Office is open until 7pm which was very helpful as we arrived a little later than expected," shares a Des Moines West KOA Holiday visitor who appreciated the winter accommodations with space heaters in bathrooms.
Site leveling: Most campgrounds feature relatively level pads, though quality varies. "Our spot was big right by the park area. We wish we could've stayed longer," notes a Timberline Campground visitor.
Dump station access: At busier campgrounds, plan for potential wait times when departing. "This campground is a hot spot for Des Moines to escape the weekend - with that said, reservations are a must! Most times you need to make them six months out," advises a Prairie Flower visitor.
