    Mississinewa Lake Campground

    Good campgrounds for boating!

If you want woodsy, private sites, don’t come here. Most are grassy and sunny. There are many areas where the sites back up close to each other. 2 rows of full hookup. Plenty of 50 amp and many good tent sites. Beach in the park but not walking distance. Great mooring area for campers. Don’t try to pull-thru in any sites that are back-in. DNR will come around repeatedly and ask you to turn around...after you are already set up. Disc golf, trails, store near the beach, cabin rentals.

    Blue Water Campground

    Our stay at bluewater

The staff is extremely friendly, and try to accomadate with anything you could need. The campesites are fairly large with gravel pads. They offer water and electric hook-up for 30&50 amps. There is not a sewer hook up but they do offer a weekly pump out for a small fee and a dump station on the way out. The pool, ponds, playground and pavillion are all within walking distance from almost any site.

    Happy Acres Campground

Friendly, clean, and easy to get to

This was the first park we went to as new trailer owners. It did not disappoint. Staff are so friendly and helpful. It is right off I69 so easy access but you will have road noise. We did not find it intrusive but understand not everyone may think the same. Sites are gravel and where we were, pretty level. There are other sites you may need leveling pads on but nothing looked crazy. Our site had full hookups. Some had only water and electric. No issues with cell service or Starlink. We had a fire ring and picnic table. Not a lot of trees though. The seasonal parts of the park do. The bathrooms are modern and clean. Our site was a pull through, others are back in. It seemed to me that 3/4 of the sites are occupied by semi permanent seasonal tenants though. Almost looked like a mobile home park in a way with sheds and decks. They have the best sites along the water. The transient sites are separated from them. Because of the permanent residents there is golf cart traffic. It was not noisy or party atmosphere though. Angola is close for dining or shopping. All and all, enjoyed the visit and would not hesitate to stay there again.

    Elkhart County Fairgrounds

    Typical Fairgrounds Camping Experience

I have camped here a couple of times while visiting northern Indiana to have repairs done on my RV. Overall, I like this campground where for $30/night you can get a 50 amp full hook-up site or $23/night a 30 amp and water site. If you plan on staying longer weekly and monthly rates are really good. The campground sits in the middle of the county fairgrounds so there is usually something going on – either a fair, concert, horse event, or an RV rally. Depending on what time of year you are here and part of the week, the campground could be very crowded or very empty. The nice thing is the people in the office let you pick whatever site you want and don’t assign one to you. There are 275 full hook-up sites with 50 amp full hook-up and 30 amp water & electric only. There are no fires allowed and some sites don’t have picnic tables but you can request one and they will bring it to your site.

There is very little shade and during my last visit the late September fall temperatures climbed to nearly 90 degrees and was brutal. This campground is better suited for RVs than tents but you are permitted to tent camp. Bathrooms and showers are scattered about and I was amazed at always how clean they (and the grounds as a whole) are. They do offer WiFi which worked pretty well in non-peak hours like early morning but was not reliable and sometimes frustrating. Since many sites have a clear view of the sky, you most likely will get satellite television reception and a dozen or so antenna channels.

One of the things I like about this park is the vast expanse of grounds to wander about walking my dog. There is a trail system just outside of the park that allows you miles and miles of walking and biking trails. Downtown Goshen is less than two miles away and has some great restaurants (including Venturi Pizza, Maple Indian Cuisine – which has an awesome buffet, and Goshen Brewing Company). The Saturday farmers market is great with lots of produce, breads, meats, cheeses, and crafts.

The last time I visited coincided with the Mennonite Relief Fund which was a big fund raiser for their charity that packed the grounds with stuff for sale, food, and activities. It was fun to be there during the event but it meant the campground and grounds were packed.

Now for the bad about this campground. It is located right next to very busy train tracks that operate 24/7 and blow their horns quite often. They were really annoying in the middle of the night. Sites are close together so if it is crowded and you have a neighbor, you will be right on top of them. There is no shade which can be very miserable.

    Pros:

    · Price - $30/night for a 50 amp full hook-up site

    · Nearby downtown stores and restaurants

    · Sites are not assigned so you can pick where you want to camp

    · Grassy patios

    · Large grounds to meander around

    · Nearby biking/walking trail

    Cons:

    · Very noisy from nearby trains operated at all hours

    · Few trees for shade or privacy

    · Some sites are very tight and close to your neighbor

    · Can be very crowded

    · WiFi provided but not reliable

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park at Plymouth

    August 2018: Meh

Please know this is mostly a mobile home park and long term rvs. It’s kept up decent but some shoddy add ons and sheds throughout. there are I’ve 900 sites and more than 95% are permanent. It’s between a very busy freeway and very busy railroad track. Cute little lake with lots of activities for kids and themed weekends. I was abke to run 3 miles aroind the park. Full hook ups are only up to 30 amps. Close to Chicago. We will not be returning due to noise but other than that, it’s ‘meh’.

    Fireside Resort RV Park

Close to highway and event center

This is a decent place. Very close to the event center and auto center where they have alot of big events. Its a gravel lot in the middle of a field but they have all the normal amenities. Even have a pool and propane fills. Alot of the people in here during the winter are people living long-term for seasonal work. Not the best rigs so you wont feel bad if yours isnt new or clean. Strong highway noise but overall a quite place

    Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday

    Great Visit / Great Park

We spent this past week at Hogback Lake KOA. It is late in the season so much of the park was closed for the season, but we had a great year round site. A little bit of road noise, but water, electric, sewer, cable TV all worked great. We have family in the area and had a great visit. We will definitely stay here again in the spring.

    Johnny Appleseed Campground

    Great location

The location here is pretty crazy it’s right in the middle of town but feels like a park there is a river and wooded area that makes you feel like you are in nature but you are just a parking lot away from an arena and college. There is a playground and a dog park. Here as well as ball diamonds. This is a great family friendly place but is very very busy during the season.

Guide to Roanoke

Camping opportunities near Roanoke, Indiana are found within the Wabash River valley at elevations averaging 800 feet. The region features a mix of deciduous forest and farmland with summer temperatures typically ranging from 70-85°F. Most campgrounds in the area are within a 20-mile radius of Roanoke, with several options providing lake access for water recreation during the primary camping season from April through October.

What to do

Hiking trails: At Ouabache State Park Campground, visitors can explore multiple trail options with varying terrain. "Love all the trails here, lots of options for how long of a hike you want to take! There's a surprising variation between more deciduous and coniferous environments depending on the trail you choose," notes one camper. The park also features a fire tower for panoramic views.

Boating and fishing: Kil-So-Quah - J. Edward Roush Lake provides water recreation opportunities on Huntington Lake. "Regular campground with pit toilets. Electric and primitive sites available. Good bird watching spot. Lots of eagles," reports one visitor. The lake is popular for fishing, with boat ramps available for easy water access.

Wildlife viewing: Look for bison at Ouabache State Park. "The bison enclosure is always fun to check out, and the last time we stayed I actually walked to the top of the restored fire tower to take in the view," shares a camper. The bison exhibit offers a unique wildlife viewing opportunity not common in Indiana parks.

What campers like

Bike trail access: The paved trails at Ouabache State Park connect to longer routes. "The paved bike trail in the park starts near the campground, and connects with a bike trail along the Wabash River that goes into nearby Bluffton, and is an easy ride," mentions a reviewer. This connectivity allows for extended cycling opportunities beyond park boundaries.

Peaceful rural settings: Shipshewana Trading Place RV Park offers a quiet atmosphere with rural views. "The park was clean and quiet and next to some beautiful grazing fields with cattle and horses," writes one camper. The agricultural surroundings provide a tranquil camping experience.

Lake views: Many campers appreciate the water access at Chain O' Lakes State Park. "My family and I go to Chain O Lakes for short hikes, kayaking and camping. We come here out of convenience, since we live twenty minutes away," notes a local visitor. The multiple connected lakes create numerous scenic camping spots.

What you should know

Weather considerations: Low-lying areas at some campgrounds can flood during heavy rain. "The campsites are mostly spaced out for room, but some can get very wet and flooded during a nice rain," warns a camper about Ouabache State Park. Sites closer to water features are particularly susceptible.

Reservation requirements: Most rv sites near Roanoke, Indiana need advance booking during summer. At Kil-So-Quah, "During the weekends it gets packed. Only 60 sites so show up early if you want one. No reservations so first come gets it," advises a regular visitor. Weekday availability is generally better than weekends.

Water quality issues: Some campgrounds have water quality concerns. "The potable water is brown and smelly.. be sure to bring your water filter! But we did enjoy our weekend here," mentions a camper at Ouabache State Park. A portable water filter is recommended for drinking water.

Tips for camping with families

Wildlife education opportunities: Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground offers natural programming. "We spoke with the naturalist and volunteered our time she was absolutely fantastic," reports a visitor. The educational activities are particularly engaging for children interested in nature.

Best beach options: For families seeking water play, Chain O' Lakes provides swimming areas. "Kayaking and the beach was a huge hit with the kids," shares a camper. However, another visitor notes, "The beach is often overcrowded with local partiers, drinking and smoking, and leaving trash everywhere. After peak hours these people clear out."

Playground access: Multiple play areas are available at Kil-So-Quah. "The campground accommodates both luxury rv campers and more rustic private tent or hammock goers like myself. Entering the camping area there is a lush grass opening with large campsites with water and electric hook ups for the RV folk. There are also 2 nice play grounds in this area as well," describes a camper.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: When booking rv sites near Roanoke, Indiana, consider site layout carefully. At Indian Springs Campground, one RVer reported, "Our site was dirty and the arrangement of electricity, water and sewer was poor." Requesting specific site information before booking helps avoid setup challenges.

Off-season advantages: Winter camping options exist at select locations. "Love this place for winter camping. The campground comfort stations are heated all winter long," notes a camper about Ouabache State Park. This makes cold-weather camping more comfortable for RV travelers.

Check-in procedures: Different campgrounds have varying check-in requirements. At Wabash City RV Park, "You MUST check in at the Water Treatment Plant by 4PM. You do not need to have picked a site, yet. Complete the typical paperwork and you'll be given keys to unlock the electrical box and a key to turn on the water." Understanding these procedures prevents arrival complications.
