    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

The Shawnee National Forest area around Karbers Ridge, Illinois encompasses several developed campgrounds and dispersed camping areas, particularly in the Garden of the Gods Recreation Area. Pharaoh Campground provides tent and RV sites with basic amenities including fire rings, picnic tables, and vault toilets. Other nearby options include Pine Ridge Campground at Pounds Hollow Recreation Area and the Jackson Falls dispersed camping area. Camping options range from established sites with electric hookups and water to primitive backcountry camping along hiking trails. Most campgrounds in this region provide access to scenic overlooks and hiking opportunities within the forested hills and unique rock formations characteristic of southern Illinois.

Seasonal considerations affect camping availability throughout the area, with several campgrounds operating only from spring through fall. Garden of the Gods campground is open year-round with 12 primitive sites available on a first-come, first-served basis for $10 per night, while nearby Pine Ridge operates from April through mid-December. Many campgrounds in the region have limited amenities—pit toilets and hand pumps for water are common, with no shower facilities at most locations. Camping areas frequently fill on weekends and during peak fall foliage season when visitors come to experience the scenic vistas. A visitor noted, "The sites were a bit too close to each other for us. The campground is beautiful though. The main draw for us was being able to walk to the Garden of the Gods trail."

Campers consistently praise the natural features and hiking accessibility from camping areas in the region. The primary attraction is Garden of the Gods with its distinctive sandstone rock formations, which connects directly to camping areas via short trails. Several developed campgrounds sit close to trailheads, making them convenient bases for exploring the wilderness. Some backcountry camping sites along Indian Point Trail offer cliff-top views with more seclusion than established campgrounds. According to a review, "About halfway around the loop trail we found some wonderful campsites. One was nicely tucked atop the cliff with a perfect view." Visitors frequently mention the area's stargazing opportunities, with some campers describing it as "one of the most clear and closest to the sky areas in the midwest." Horse camping facilities are also available at High Knob Campgrounds for equestrians wanting to explore the extensive trail system.

Duncan Lake, Land Between the Lakes

Dispersed site nestled in and surrounded by tall pines with lake access.

Duncan Lake is a small inland Lake located in the Kentucky portion of LBL.  The campsite area is located at the end then up around the corner of the first of two access roads to the lake. There is a small boat ramp not far from the site. It is close enough to carry kayaks back and forth. The lake is small and shallow except near the outlet. Great for paddling around and doing some fishing. We have seen bald eagles  both times we camped. There is also a beaver community on the lake, they might give you a tail slap on the water if you get to close.

There are enough level spots to accommodate 3 or 4 tents. There is a stone fire ring and that is abut it.

It is a popular bird watching area and  both times we camped there were people that used the lake each time. The boat ramp is just far enough away from the camp site that it really didn't affect us at all. If there is a breeze it sounds really nice as it blows through the tall pines.

We generally bring our bikes and do a loop from the camp to the Nature centre and back.

The Lake is closed from Nov. 1 through March 15 to protect wintering waterfowl. no camping or access at all.

There is no cell service but there is a clear view for a starlink setup.

Little Lusk Trail Lodge & Campground

      Peaceful camping night

We were on our hike in Shawnee National Forest, and we found this campground. And it was an amazing experience. It has a beautiful view of the sunset, and there are ponds. There are horses on the property, and it’s very cheap for tent camping. The staff was amazing. She showed us around with her 4x4 the whole property, the horses, and the pony or a donkey. The showers were pretty decent and cleaned

I would recommend this place for everyone

      Benton KOA

A Great Overnight Stop Just Off I-57

Benton KOA Journey is an easy overnight stop just off I-57. Since we were already familiar with the campground layout, we called ahead to ask if we could go directly to our site on the opposite side of the road from the office and check in afterward. The staff gladly accommodated our request. We stayed in Deluxe Full-Hookup Pull-Through Patio Site 65, which made it easy to center our 40-foot fifth wheel on the utilities. The site was slightly off level, but we did not need to use blocks. The gravel patio featured a huge wheelchair-accessible picnic table, fire pit with cooking grate, stand-up charcoal grill, wooden swing, and bench. We received one bar on Verizon and two bars on T-Mobile. There are mature trees around the seven pull-through sites across the road from the main campground, but Starlink should work in most of them if you're able to position the dish around the trees. For this overnight stay, we used our T-Mobile Home Internet, which averaged 358 Mbps download and 2.7 Mbps upload. The campground Wi-Fi was adequate for light browsing. A fenced dog park was conveniently located near our site, and being across the road from the main campground helped reduce interstate noise. Overall, this is a clean, well-run KOA with exceptionally friendly and helpful staff, and a good overnight stop returning to our home base in southern Illinois to rest and dump tanks.

      Paducah-Kentucky Lake KOA

      Decent KOA

Before arrival, we received a helpful confirmation email with clear directions for entering the campground, although the turn was easy with our 40-foot fifth wheel. Check-in was exceptionally friendly—we were even welcomed by a fellow Brinkley owner—and escorted to pull-through Site A6 with full hookups. The utilities were easy to reach, and water pressure was good. We were pleasantly surprised to learn we could park our truck anywhere, even on the grass. Starlink would be questionable because of the mature trees, but the campground's Wi-Fi was better than most we have experienced at around 50 Mbps download and 24 Mbps upload. We had two bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile, while our T-Mobile Home Internet work well. The upper A-loop pull-through sites are fairly level but somewhat close together. The terraced B, C, and D loops could be more challenging for larger rigs to maneuver, level, and exit. The campground also offers a fishing pond, cabins, tent sites, and a fenced dog park. Overall, this is a clean, well-maintained KOA Journey with friendly staff that worked very well for our overnight stay, and we would stay here again.

      Dutchman Lake Camp

Hidden gem just off the highway

This hidden gem is worth the visit. It’s off the highway down Amish/Dutch country. It has a maintained gravel road beautiful lake and in June it’s covered with lightening bugs. Lots of wild flowers and the sunset- WOW! On the trail there is a sign to set up for selfies. With a dog it wasn’t as easy as I’d hope to capture the moment. Ha

      Paducah-Kentucky Lake KOA

      It’s a KOA

We are on a cross country road trip from Atlanta to Spokane to visit grandkids. Lots of one night stops for easy access and quick getaway in the morning. This place isn’t fancy, it’s a KOA. But it meets out needs. The site is level and shaded. Full hookups . There used to be a pool and playground that we didn’t use. Also a mossy “fishing” pond! And a store.

The bathroom/ showers were reasonably clean The internet is terrible!

It was quiet until three pick up trucks pulled in next to us and proceeded to do auto repairs! Lots of loud banging! Luckily it’s just one night.

    Guide to Karbers Ridge

Dispersed camping sites near Karbers Ridge, Illinois provide access to southern Illinois' unique sandstone geography. The region sits within the Shawnee National Forest at elevations between 400-600 feet, creating a distinctive ecosystem where eastern hardwoods meet western prairie plants. During summer months, temperatures average 85-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall camping offers milder conditions between 60-75°F.

    What to do

Waterfront recreation: Tower Rock Campground sits directly on the Ohio River, offering excellent fishing access and scenic views. "A short walk from the campground is Tower Rock that was an old CCC path and over look of the Ohio River... It is a rock cliff that is, I don't know 100 feet above the river. In my opinion it is worth a look," notes Christopher H.

Swimming options: Pine Ridge Campground at Pounds Hollow Recreation Area provides a small beach for summer cooling. "The USDA Forest recreational area includes Pounds Hollow Lake that is nestled into a beautiful ridge. While the lake can get busy, and was at times while we were there, the campground was very quiet," reports Jason F.

Scenic hiking: Redbud Campground at Bell Smith Springs offers multiple trail connections from the campground. "Just around the corner (or down the trail at the start of camp) is a network of hiking trails. They scurry around cliffs, falls and ravines. We found small pools perfect for a summer dip. Half the hikers were carrying towels so it must be a common plan," explains Art S.

    What campers like

Quiet locations: Camp Cadiz Campground provides a secluded alternative to busier campgrounds. "Motorcycle camping across America and I wanted to see grades of the gods. What I didn't want was to camp on top of someone else... Cadiz was spacious, quiet, and the other campers wanted to camp not party," shares Jeremy G.

Fishing opportunities: Saline County State Conservation Area provides waterfront sites with fishing access. "This was a great campground with fantastic views of the lake," notes Don N., who stayed in October 2021.

Swimming holes: Jackson Falls offers natural swimming spots when water levels permit. "It was fun climbing down to the bottom of the falls, even with small kids. The site is popular and there was a good amount of people on Labor Day weekend, however secluded camp sites were easy to find, isolation was achieved," reports Casie A.

    What you should know

Water availability: Many primitive sites require bringing your own water. At Pine Ridge Campground, a visitor notes "the drinking water pump is broke so you must bring your own water. You can get firewood from the garden of the gods outpost."

Road conditions: Pounds Hollow Recreation Area offers better road access than some other areas. One camper reported, "Headed here after garden of the gods was full. This place is very close to where you need to be. Outpost in between sells food, firewood, ice etc."

Cell service limitations: Service varies dramatically across the region. At Bell Smith Springs, one visitor observed, "I had no service and it was pitch black at night. The only amenities are a vault toilet and water." Similarly at Saline County, Don N. mentioned, "The only drawback is that we had no cell service, although a quick trip to the ridge behind the campsite (1-2 minute drive)" restored connectivity.

    Tips for camping with families

Beach access: For families wanting water recreation, consider Saline County State Conservation Area. "It is a beautiful area with a lot to do! You can fish here and even put in a boat or other water toys if you own one," notes M E.

Easy hiking options: Bell Smith Springs offers family-friendly exploration. "Plenty of hiking right from your site. 10 minute walk or 2 minute drive to the river where you can hike, swim or wade. Even if it seems crowded, just walk down the river a ways for some privacy," suggests Kate B.

Wildlife awareness: Watch for ticks and snakes during warm months. At Jackson Falls, locals warned visitors about wildlife: "Locals warned of poisonous snakes. We never saw any, but it's a good idea to keep a lookout, especially since they can swim too," shared Tommy S.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: At Cave-in-Rock State Park, RV sites offer good spacing. "The sites are decent size. It can be a bit of a walk to the bathroom. It does have a restaurant and small store on site," notes Chris Y.

Hookup availability: Pounds Hollow provides electric hookups on selected sites. One visitor explained, "The left loop has power 50/30/20 amp hook ups but no water or sewer on the campsite. Great location for hiking trails and it's exactly 23 Miles to Walmart. And it was only $10 a night!!!"

Access considerations: For RVers seeking more level terrain, choose carefully. At Pine Ridge Campground, one camper advised, "I can't promise this is the best campground for the large RV crowd, due to the undulating nature of the sites, but for tent lovers, this might be one of the best."
