Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Bloomington, ID

Bear Lake North RV Park and Campground permits pets throughout its tent sites, RV spaces, cabins, and yurts. Campers with dogs appreciate the fenced dog park area that provides a safe space for pets to run off-leash while maintaining leash requirements in other areas of the campground. The KOA campgrounds near Bloomington, including Bear Lake/Marina Side KOA Holiday and Bear Lake/Trail Side KOA Journey, enforce standard pet policies with designated pet-friendly sites. Some KOA locations charge additional pet fees not included in the base camping rate. Willow Flat Campground and Paris Springs Campground in the Caribou National Forest also welcome pets but require them to remain on leash at all times.

Dispersed camping options in Franklin Basin provide more freedom for pets with fewer restrictions than established campgrounds. The dirt road access extends well into Idaho with spread-out camping spots that offer direct river access. Many campers note the importance of keeping dogs leashed at Bear Lake State Park's Birch Campground, as dogs are not permitted on park beaches or in day-use areas. This restriction limits dog walking to campground roads and designated pet areas. Several campgrounds feature grassy areas specifically designed for pet exercise, though the quality and size of these areas vary considerably between locations. Veterinary services are available in Montpelier, approximately 15 miles from Bloomington, for emergency pet care during camping trips.

    Lava Hot Springs West KOA

    Not camping, but still great

Don’t get me wrong. This is not camping. But it’s the perfect spot if you want to be around all the fun action of Lava Hot Springs. You’re walking distance to the river, restaurants, the pool and all the fun stuff in Lava. We were on site #1 which is by the playground and dog park, because we had both on our reservation. At first we were upset at our location, but it was actually great. Everything is clean and well managed and management made sure people kept to the quiet time.

    Bear Lake/Marina Side KOA Holiday

    Busy, not private but clean

I had never been to a KOA campground before but we were driving cross country and were tired. For $43 for a tent site we got a nice patch of grass and a fire pit. It’s clean and comfortable, but definitely a busy place. You are right next to your neighbor but they do try and put you in every-other site for space. Great bathroom facilities, dog park, amenities.

It really depends on what you like. We are tent campers that like forest service campgrounds so this is too busy for us. But a nice spot.

    Devils Creek RV Park

    Close quarters but friendly faces

This is an older campground, and space near reservoirs is a hot commodity. The RV park host was very friendly and accommodating. Very clean campground with a nice boat dock and plenty of spaces to get down near the reservoir and fish.

Warning - Some of the spaces felt like extremely close quarters especially with slide outs. The picture below shows one of the older full utility locations. Some units may not have much room to slide out without contacting the utility boxes. Some units offer great shade and an awning next to a shared fire pit, shared picnic table. Some units have a really nice shared grass area between trailers. Also several people here are seasonal campers with monthly rates. This can make finding a space a little more challenging. Call ahead and make sure to get reservations so you can get a spot.

Lot size seems inconsistent between spaces as some feel very cramped and some of the high number units without utilities had larger spaces between them, almost appearing as an extra space between two units people were using for pet/kid play areas.

Dogs are to be kept on leashes, but people should consider short leashes/tie lines as it is easy for pets to cross into adjacent units depending upon where they are staked. Make sure to plan ahead for power adapters. Only one 30amp service so if your planning to run AC, plan to be the first in or coordinate with your neighbor.

    Great KOA

Great pull-through and the back-in spots are beautiful. Kid, pet friendly, walking distance to food and fun. One of the best KOA’s we have stayed at.

    Lava Hot Springs East KOA

    Family fun

The people, bathrooms, and showers are all awesome. There is some road noise but not more than you’d get anywhere else. LOTS of shade, right next to the river, pet friendly, and cabins are also able to be rented! Would definitely come here again.

    Green Canyon Dispersed Campground

Nice hiking trails and very close to town

Perhaps a little too close to the university in Logan Utah it was busy that Friday night. I think all the spots filled by 7pm some 50 people there that night. There is close spots for small couples and large groups and also more private spacious spots for people with pets like me

    Sun Outdoors Garden City Utah

    On the beach!

This campground seems like it is one of the closer campgrounds to the water. It's pet-friendly, has full hookups, picnic tables, and wifi. The nice thing about this campground is it does have a beach as well as water/lake access. Not as many amenities as the KOA (Bear Lake/Marina Side).

The bathhouse was very clean. Did seem less busy than the KOA (Bear Lake/Marina Side).

What campers like

Forested sites with water features: Campers appreciate the natural setting at many dog friendly campgrounds near Bloomington. "The campground is in a beautiful forest with lots of trails and space to explore," Christopher W. notes about Emigration Campground, adding that it's "close to lots of attractions in the Bear Lake area, but far enough from everyone else."

Accessible amenities: Bear Lake Venture Park offers well-maintained facilities that receive consistent praise. "The restrooms, showers, campgrounds, and park area for the kids were in amazing condition," according to Shad G., who called it a "Hidden Oasis."

Riverfront camping: Many sites offer streamside locations. At Willow Flat, "the creek runs through the front of camp. You can fish in it," explains Cameron J. about Montpelier Creek KOA, adding there are "plenty of dog runs" for pet-friendly camping options around Bloomington.

Cooler temperatures: The higher elevation forests provide relief during summer. "It was just the right altitude to provide relief from the summer heat," mentions Beth B. about Willow Flat Campground.

What you should know

Site sizes vary significantly: Many campgrounds have limitations on RV length. At Paris Springs, one camper noted "the sites are small; some are pull through. I don't think I'd tow a camper longer than 20 ft through there."

Early reservations recommended: Popular campgrounds fill quickly. "Seems it filled up with reservations from thurs-sun," observes Beth B. about Willow Flat Campground.

Road conditions: Some access roads require careful navigation. At Paris Springs, "the road through the campground has a lot of deep potholes," according to one reviewer. At Sunrise Campground, "very tight to maneuver car or suv," reports Veronica H.

Weather variability: Mountain weather changes rapidly. "One night here when it first opened for the season, so there were still patches of snow and little streams here and there," reports a camper at Emigration Campground in late spring.

Tips for camping with families

Look for campgrounds with activities: Bear Lake Trail Side KOA Journey offers family-friendly amenities. "Awesome place for kids. They loved all the activites available to them," says David T., who adds "you can ask for passes for the larger KOA down the street. This gets you into the pool and everything the big KOA has."

Consider noise levels: Select quieter campgrounds for better family experiences. Trail Side KOA is described as "smaller in size and way less amenities than the other KOA but way more quiet. If you're looking to have a more peaceful stay, this is your place," according to one camper.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Children enjoy the natural surroundings at pet-friendly campgrounds near the Bloomington area. At Porcupine Campground, "There are signs of active beavers with many dams and lodges," notes Preston P.

Book group sites: Some locations offer designated group camping. "We stayed in the 'group' site which can fit two tailers and the three vehicles," explains a camper at Porcupine Campground, making it ideal for family gatherings.

Tips from RVers

Cell service considerations: Coverage varies by provider and location. At Bear Lake Venture Park, "Wifi is OK, T-Mobile cell service is 1 bar even with booster. ATT is 3 bars," reports cheriana G.

Site spacing: Be prepared for close quarters at some locations. "These sites are pretty dang close. This is a perfect place to go with family, because you basically share a site with the person next to you," explains David T. about Bear Lake Trail Side KOA.

Campfire setup variations: Different campgrounds have different fire ring designs. At Bear Lake Trail Side KOA, Ann M. noted "One thing that I didn't like is their campfire. It was way too deep to cook for food. They don't have a grill on it so you may have to bring your own gas grill or stove."

Site access challenges: Some campgrounds have difficult entry points. "It would be difficult to fit large fifth wheel trailers," warns Preston P. about Porcupine Campground's narrow access roads.
