Packsaddle Campground, nestled along the St. Joe River near Avery, permits pets throughout its primitive tent sites. Pet owners must keep dogs leashed at all designated campsites, with most areas offering picnic tables and fire rings suitable for camping with animals. Lake Elsie Campground also welcomes pets, providing toilet facilities and riverside access where dogs can cool off during summer months. The road to Lake Elsie can be rough and narrow but remains manageable with proper vehicles. Many campers report moose frequenting the area, making it essential to secure pet food and maintain control of dogs to prevent wildlife encounters.

Dispersed camping options along St. Joe River Road provide free pet-friendly alternatives with multiple riverside spots featuring small boat launches and existing fire pits. The current in this section makes swimming challenging for dogs, but wading areas allow pets to cool off safely. Stevens Lakes Backcountry area offers a more adventurous option for hikers with dogs, requiring a moderately difficult trail to reach pristine alpine lakes suitable for camping. Cliff Creek Campground Primitive Dispersed site serves as a convenient base for pet owners exploring the Hiawatha trail, with shuttle buses passing the campground multiple times daily during summer months. Mosquitoes can be prevalent at riverside sites, so pet-appropriate insect protection is advisable when camping in warmer months.

      Soaring Hawk RV Resort

      Great park

Quiet, spacious, beautiful smell of pine trees. Wouldn’t want to drive in after dark though. Two large dog parks. Park is gravel and you may need to do a little leveling, but it isn’t bad at all. Had enough room to park my 44’ rig and my truck right next to it. Would definitely come here again.

      Soaring Hawk RV Resort

      Great stat

Great new campground right outside of Plummer. There's been some sort of entertainment each night we've been here, fire dancers Friday and Saturday, a 4th of july bbq, 2 bands and fireworks at midnight tonight. There's several different sections to stay in, a dog park, lodge and laundry area. I would definitely come again.

      Wolf Lodge Campground

      Clean and convenient

Made my reservation for an overnight stay over the phone on my way there. Staff was very kind and friendly. I came after the office was closed and a map was left for which tent site was mine. Very clean campgrounds, had a cute little dog park in it too. Ample amount of restrooms and showers available, that were spotless and well stocked.

      Nice visit

Friendly and helpful staff. Clean and spacious restrooms and showers. Plenty of green space for pets. The only downside was the freeway noise.

      Dog Creek Camp

      Spacious site!

Nicely spaced out sites! Pet and family friendly. Short drive to a beautiful lake or river with hot springs. Clean outhouse bathrooms, no showers. Friendly hosts. There is currently no water hookups due to COVID. Seems to be a popular area, so recommend reservations, but we got lucky and found a site on a Friday.

    Guide to Avery

Dispersed camping options near Avery, Idaho offer outdoor enthusiasts access to the scenic St. Joe National Forest at elevations ranging from 2,400 to 6,000 feet. The area experiences warm, dry summers with temperatures averaging 75-85°F in July and August, while spring and fall bring cooler temperatures and occasional rain. Most primitive camping areas remain snow-covered until late May, with road access improving significantly by mid-June.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: The St. Joe River provides excellent fishing conditions for catching cutthroat and rainbow trout. Little North Fork Campground offers "great fishing for cutthroats and rainbows. Takes a while to drive in, but well worth it once you are there!" according to camper Cody B.

Mountain biking access: Cyclists can enjoy proximity to the Hiawatha trail from multiple camping areas. Cliff Creek Campground Primitive Dispersed provides convenient access as "The busses picking up hiawatha trail users go right by the campground multiple times a day in the summer," notes Jason S.

Paddling activities: Several camping areas feature access to calm sections of water suitable for kayaking and paddleboarding. Lake Elsie has been described as an "Awesome lake for kayaking and paddle boarding" by Nathan M., with multiple shoreline camping options.

    What campers like

Peaceful riverside settings: Campers appreciate the natural soundscape of flowing water at their campsites. One reviewer at Wallace RV Park noted, "We backed right above the creek. With the windows open I could hear it babbling all night. Pure bliss."

Wildlife viewing: The forests around Avery provide opportunities to spot various animals in their natural habitat. At Lake Elsie, campers should "be careful with your food and be smart" as "multiple bears went through the campground in the evening and came back at around 3am," according to Natalie J.

Alpine lake access: Higher elevation camping spots offer cooler temperatures and scenic lake views. Stevens Lakes Backcountry is described as "By far one of my favorite Mt lake hikes! With great camping at both the lower and upper lakes," with options for both hammock and tent camping.

    What you should know

Road conditions: Access to many camping areas requires navigation of unpaved forest roads of varying quality. Lake Elsie Campground's access road is described as "rough, potholes, it does get better about halfway up. Expect at least 30 minutes to get up after you hit the gravel, and that's pushing it pretty hard."

Bear safety measures: Proper food storage is essential in this region due to bear activity. One camper at Lake Elsie warns that "multiple bears went through the campground in the evening and came back at around 3am. Be careful with your food and be smart."

Campsite availability: Many dispersed camping areas operate on a first-come basis without reservations. At Dispersed Site on St. Joe River Rd, one camper noted they "Found this great little riverside spot while checking out the paid campgrounds along St Joe River. Saw several similar sites that were already taken."

    Tips for camping with families

Easy access options: Families with young children may prefer established campgrounds with amenities. Cabin City Campground offers family-friendly features as "Our kids loved the nature walk/hike at the entrance to the campground. The vault toilet was clean."

Wildlife education opportunities: Turn animal sightings into learning experiences while maintaining safety. Lake Elsie provides wildlife viewing as "there is a moose that frequents the area so keep your trash in your car to avoid feeding the moose."

Swimming considerations: When planning water activities with children, check current conditions and select appropriate locations. At the Dispersed Site on St. Joe River, one camper notes it's "Not the best spot for swimming due to the current in this section of the river but good enough to wade in and cool off anyway."

    Tips for RVers

Hookup availability: Several campgrounds near Avery provide electric connections for RVs. Cabins by the Joe offers powered sites, though one camper advises "it is a ways out and you better bring every thing you need because there aren't any stores close."

Site spacing considerations: RVers should consider proximity to other campers when selecting locations. At Cabins by the Joe, a camper noted "The only thing that would've made it better if there was a little bit more space between the RVs, but it was still great."

Supply planning: Due to limited services in remote areas, RVers should arrive fully stocked. At Cabins by the Joe, campers advise "bring every thing you need because there aren't any stores close. They do have ice, on site."
