Watsadler Campground on Lake Hartwell maintains dog-friendly sites with picnic tables and fire rings where pets must remain leashed. Springfield-Hartwell Lake, Twin Lakes, and Tugaloo State Park accommodate pets at tent sites, RV spaces, and select cabins with water access. Most campgrounds require pets to stay on a 6-foot leash at all times, clean up after pets, and keep them from disturbing wildlife or other campers. Lake Hartwell State Park Campground features spacious, level sites with room for pets to move around while remaining secured. Sites at Watsadler have concrete parking pads with space for picnic tables and fire pits, suitable for camping with dogs in cooler months when fewer visitors frequent the area.

Lakefront campsites with gentle shoreline access provide excellent spots for dogs to cool off during summer camping trips. Campers report the paved roads at Springfield-Hartwell Lake make for comfortable dog walking, though some sites require careful planning due to ant problems. Most campgrounds maintain clean, accessible bathhouses and some offer designated pet waste stations. Hartwell's pet-friendly camping areas remain relatively quiet even during peak seasons, making them suitable for pets sensitive to noise. The city of Hartwell is a short drive from most campgrounds, providing access to pet supplies, veterinary services, and pet-friendly dining options. Sites with beach access are particularly popular among dog owners, though water levels fluctuate seasonally affecting shore accessibility.

      Willow Valley RV Resort

Raybun Gap, GA….Going on our fav list!!

Very very nice campground. Good signage and off 441 N. Not any places to eat without going into Clayton. Beautiful park with large sites, some paved. Laundry to was clean. Reasonable size dog park, dog walk and outside dog bath. Lots of trees, very clean and trash pickup at your site. Office lady was very nice and check in was efficient, even though we made the reservations at the last minute. It’s not cheap by any means but you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Hartwell Lake is a man-made lake bordering Georgia and South Carolina on the Savannah, Tugaloo and Seneca Rivers. The dam and lake area boasts 8 campgrounds and 11 day-use facilities that are operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The Hartwell Project was originally authorized for hydro-power, flood control, and navigation. Later, recreation, water quality, water supply and fish and wildlife management were added. Surrounding vegetation allows for plenty of shade, and the 962 miles of shoreline provide numerous swimming beaches, picnic areas and boat ramps.

Fishing is one of the most popular activities at the lake. Sought-after species include largemouth bass, bream, crappie, catfish, striped bass and hybrid bass.

The lake appeals to boaters of all kinds, whether their specialty is canoeing, sailing or motor boating. Coves and areas of quiet water provide water skiers with excellent surfaces.

Swimmers will find sand beaches and designated swim areas along the shoreline.

      Sadlers Creek State Park Campground

      Nice lake campground

Awesome views over lake Hartwell. Nice sized sites, could be a little more level. Needed to slightly block up rear of out class A to get level. Stairs down to the water right next to our site so easy access to our canoe. We will camp here again. 50A power and water at site. Dump station near the exit. ATT phones worked well. Greenville TV stations OTA easily received. Awesome sunrises and sunsets

      Tugaloo State Park Campground

      Water all around

Water water everywhere.  On the Georgia side Tugaloo State Park is Located on Lake Hartwell on the Georgia/South Carolina state line.

Getting to the campsites is pretty tight but once you are parked, it is just beautiful overlooking the lake.  Lots of fun for families who enjoy the water.  Also you can see fishing boats zoom to their fishing location at night.  Peaceful and calming rest from the corporate life!

Sarah's Creek Campground (Clayton, Ga) — Chattahoochee Oconee National Forest

      Great for Tent Camping!

Stayed here in July 2020. Campsites are available on a first come, first served basis. There is no cell service. It's pet friendly. No water or electric hookups. Bathrooms are toilet only and no running water or temperature control.

There's the facts. Now on to the good stuff.

The road to get to some of these sites is ROUGH. Definitely not a road to drive for those who aren't skilled in off road driving.

We stayed in one of the back sites near the creek (I can't recall the number). Most of the sites were VERY secluded. We could see our neighbors in the distance, but not very well.

Some of the sites are HUGE. Ours was one of those large ones.

There are bugs everywhere. Make sure you know how to set up your site to repel bugs!

This campground has it all - fishing, hiking, waterfalls, wildlife, etc. It's a primitive camper's dream!

    Guide to Hartwell

Lake Hartwell spans 56,000 acres along the Georgia-South Carolina border with 962 miles of shoreline. Temperatures range from 45-90°F depending on season, with summer being the most popular camping period. Water levels fluctuate by 5-10 feet throughout the year, affecting shoreline access for campers with pets.

    What to do

Hiking with dogs: Several trails within 10 miles of Tugaloo State Park Campground accommodate leashed pets. "I did the Sassafras Loop trail which follows the lake shore most of time and great views the rest. Our dogs loved all the space," notes Liz H.

Kayaking from campsites: Launch directly from waterfront sites at Twin Lakes at Lake Hartwell. "We stayed at site 40 and it was right on the lake. Very beautiful and peaceful campground. Friendly staff," according to Elizabeth G. Most pet-friendly sites have gradual water entry for dogs.

Swimming spots for dogs: Sandy beach areas provide safe water entry. "The sites are big, with trees in between most sites. Most sites are a stones throw away from the lake. The view Lake Hartwell is Beautiful," reports Melissa W. about Springfield-Hartwell Lake. Dogs must remain on leash even when in water.

    What campers like

Quiet off-season camping: Winter and early spring offer more privacy for pet owners. "Very quiet in off season! Clean and shady with pretty views!" says Ashton H. about Watsadler campground. Lower occupancy means less stress for dogs sensitive to crowds.

Shaded waterfront sites: Trees provide relief from summer heat for pets. "Lots of mature trees make shade an easily accessible feature. Water, power and cable at the sites with grey water dumps very numerous," mentions Maggie G. about Tugaloo State Park.

Concrete pads with space: Level sites make setting up dog containment systems easier. "The sites are large, with trees in between most sites. Most sites are a stones throw away from the lake," says Melissa W. about Springfield - Hartwell Lake. Most sites have additional grassy areas for pets.

    What you should know

Fire ant management: Some campsites require preventative measures. "Our only complaint was the entire campsite was one large fire ant hill! We had to travel to the local dollar general to get ant spray to help with the infestation," warns Melissa R. about Lake Hartwell State Park Campground.

Bathhouse quality varies: Facilities range from basic to well-maintained. "Bath houses are a little old but they are always clean. Level gravel pads for campers and quiet park," reports Tony K. about Twin Lakes. Some locations lack shower facilities entirely.

Seasonal water levels: Lake drawdowns affect shore accessibility. "Needed to buy a ladder to reach the water from our site. Many types of sites available - wooded, open, small large," mentions Marcy S. Water levels are typically highest in spring and lowest in late fall.

    Tips for camping with families

Enclosed platforms for tent camping: Shelter systems protect gear from weather. "The tent sites are AMAZING! You can even hang your hammock(s) underneath the shelter for a true outdoor camping experience!" explains George & Patty C. about Victoria Bryant State Park Campground. Dogs can be secured to platform posts.

Creek swimming alternatives: Options beyond lake access for cooling off. "The playground is big, but the kids MOST enjoyed the "rock slide" in the creek. We spent most of the day there," shares Sonyia W. Dogs can wade in shallow creek areas under supervision.

Beach playgrounds: Combined water and land recreation areas. "Nice level sites clean bath house not full hook up," notes Lee A. Many pet-friendly campgrounds feature designated swimming areas with adjacent playgrounds.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Prepare for uneven terrain at some campgrounds. "As of 2019 this park needed a lot of upgrades to the majority of the sites, such as fire rings, new picnic tables. The sides of the road were washing out from water run off," advises Laura H. about Thousand Trails Carolina Landing.

Limited sewer hookups: Plan for regular dump station visits. "No sewer hookups but each loop has a dump station. We stayed at site 42 lake view and level with a little incline to pad," shares Richard F. Most campgrounds provide grey water disposal points separate from main dump stations.

Towing access limitations: Large rigs require careful site selection. "The entry and exit can be kind of tight getting in or out with trailer. Bring leveling blocks. The spot I stayed in required about 4" side to side," cautions Candy H. Many waterfront sites with optimal dog access have challenging approaches.
