Murder Creek Parking Area off Highway 212 permits overnight tent and RV camping with pets at no cost, making it one of the few free dispersed camping options in the Eatonton region. This primitive site features a parking lot where campers can set up approximately 200 feet from water cascades along Murder Creek. North Shore Landing and Lawrence Shoals Campground offer more developed options with electric hookups, showers, and designated areas for pets. Old Salem Park Campground allows dogs throughout the facility, including at their beach area and playground, though owners report persistent ant problems that can affect both campsites and pet food storage areas.

The natural water features at these campgrounds provide excellent recreation for dogs and their owners. Murder Creek's quiet location lets pets enjoy the waterfall sounds that drown out most traffic noise, though the unpaved access requires vehicles with higher clearance. Lawrence Shoals features multiple trails with historical markers where leashed pets can accompany hikers, plus secluded spots along the lakeshore where dogs can swim outside the designated human beach areas. Georgia Power campgrounds maintain consistently clean facilities with hot water and proper waste disposal areas. The KOA at North Shore Landing includes a dedicated dog park among its amenities, with a railroad-themed property that includes renovated caboose accommodations alongside traditional camping sites.

      Forsyth KOA

      Bad Experience

We should have known when we first arrived not to stay here. Our welcome was very brisk and unfriendly. Our site was literally right next to the freeway with terrible freeway noise and fuel smells. We asked to be moved and our new site was so narrow that the picnic tables didn’t even fit in the site and tottered on the edge of the site’s bank. They offer site garbage pick up daily, but not to monthly stays. So they drive right by your site while picking up garbage to sites right next to you! Playground is satisfactory but the dog park is muddy and rocky. When we signed in and mentioned we were excited about having a dog park the check in person said she wouldn’t take her dog to it! I highly recommend driving right on by! We use KOA’s regularly and this campground management is far below KOA standards! Beware!

      North Shore Landing

      Gem of a place

Being next to railroad tracks it has a railroad motif you can actually stay in a renovated caboose. If that’s not your thing there’s plenty of tent sites, cabins, RVs, and RV sites just a few of the many amenities are the activity center, the swimming pool, beach access to Lake Oconee ,laundromat, and dog park. There’s also plenty of helpful stuff ready to drive you down to the pool or continually working on upkeep of the property very nice. We were just passing through but I have no problem staying here again. Wonderful place.

      Forsyth KOA

      Good Overnight Stop

This was a good overnight site.  Typical KOA pull through where you are close to your neighbor.  They have a small dog park which is a bonus.  Staff was friendly and helpful.

      North Shore Landing

      Beautiful Lake and Friendly People

Located on Lake Oconee, North Shore Landing is a KOA/TRA campground. There is a dock to fish from, and a boat launch if you want to go out. There's some very large catfish in the lake, 30+ lbs. There's also bass, blue gill and crappie. The campground is per friendly, full hook-up, with WiFi (pay for premium). There is a pool, clubhouse and 24 hour laundry that's $3 per load, w&d. There's a dog park, basketball and cornhole. Propane fill and dump station.

      Scenic Mountain RV Park

In the middle of nowhere near downtown

Very nice, well kept little campground. The sites are good sized but not a lot of privacy. Sorta like a nice parking lot with grass and trees. We stayed in January so the weather was on the chill side. I did not notice a lot of trees though for shade when the temperature does rise. When you enter there are two nice little ponds that are said to house some fish. At the top of the right side hill there is a pavilion, laundry area and private shower rooms. Very clean, very well maintained. Not a lot of light but if you have your fire pit going and your flashlight you’ll be good. There are some nice short trails and a small dog park with agility equipment. Milledgeville is close by and your campground hosts have compiled at list of nearby places to visit AND a list for emergencies, to include a Veterinarian which I thought was pretty awesome. Nice place.

      Fort Yargo State Park Campground

      Relaxation in The Woods

Fort Yargo is in the Winder Ga area and is close to Helen, Jefferson, Athens and Atlanta. Entering the campground is a nice paved road and leads to tent camping, cabins, yurts and RV sites.

Very clean park and has Historical area, playground, tennis court, bike and hike trails. Not to mention beach and boating area.

Picnics, camping, boating biking and camping or just day use areas. Pet friendly and all around great park.

There is a small general store, but you are so close to everything if you need it, it's there.

Gread for the Georgia Bulldog crowd as its less then 30 minutes!

      I recommend this park highly.

      Indian Springs

      Nice campground - Site 19

1st time for us to Indian Springs. Very clean and well maintained. Site 19 was on a less populated loop and a long stretch of woods on the "driver" side thus no neighbors.  Site was very easy to back into.

We stayed in March, so when the leaves are off the trees, you can see the lake. Kinda doubtful you would during the summer. Gray water dump is very close. Bathhouse was about a 2 minute walk, but didn't use it.

I'd stay on this section again, but maybe across the street. or preferably down by the water.  There's a short drop off behind the fence by the fire ring, that the dog keeps trying to go down and getting stuck - imagine little ones may love that area.

The town of Flovilla is right outside the gates, with  some shops and a nice restaurant. Dollar General is 5 mins away. Dauset Trails Nature Preserve is about 15 minutes away, but note pets aren't allowed. High Falls State park is about 15 minutes away with good hiking trails. Plus boat, and paddle board rentals.

    Guide to Eatonton

Dispersed camping options near Eatonton, Georgia include several sites around Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair. The region sits at approximately 400-600 feet elevation with a humid subtropical climate featuring hot summers where temperatures often exceed 90°F. Fall and spring provide the most comfortable camping conditions with moderate temperatures and lower humidity, while winter nights can drop below freezing.

    What to do

Water recreation access: Lawrence Shoals Campground provides extensive lake activities including boat ramps, multiple docks, and a swimming beach. "The lake is very large and welcomes boaters of any kind, including jet skis. There is a small swimming beach, of course no dogs allowed but if you walk around the edge of the lake, you can find plenty of spots to take a splash with your pup," notes camper Mike B.

Hiking opportunities: Hard Labor Creek State Park offers multiple trail systems suitable for different skill levels. "We were able to walk off of the back of our site and onto the trail system, which is perfect because we are avid hikers," explains George & Patty C. The park maintains well-marked paths that connect directly to camping areas.

Mountain biking trails: Hard Labor Creek State Park features dedicated mountain biking routes beyond the hiking system. "There are hiking trails, kayak rentals, a beach area (swimming) and two nice lakes! There are equestrian trails and even an equestrian campground," reports George & Patty C., highlighting the diverse recreation options.

    What campers like

Spacious campsites: Old Salem Park Campground gets praise for its well-designed sites. "The sites are well spaced an fairly level. My site was so level I didn't need leveling blocks. I like having pea gravel in stead of dirt, it's so much cleaned after it rains," reports Scott R.

Clean facilities: North Shore Landing maintains quality amenities for campers. "Beautiful lake views, RV sites with patios and bbqs. Fishing, boat ramp, pool, charming train theme. You can even sleep overnight in a train car cabin," says Angela V., highlighting the unique accommodations.

Pet friendly environment: Hard Labor Creek State Park welcomes dogs throughout the camping areas. "The park is dog friendly," notes Winston M., making it ideal for those seeking pet friendly camping near Eatonton, Georgia. The park requires leashes but provides ample space for walking pets.

    What you should know

Ant management needed: Several campgrounds require preventative measures for ants. "Georgia Power has gone to great lengths to get rid of the ants. We went prepared for a problem and there was no problem at our site," reports Scott R. at Old Salem Park Campground, showing improvement in this common issue.

Reservation requirements: Georgia state parks have specific booking policies. "GA in all its wisdom has the asinine rule that you must stay two nights even if the park is virtually empty," warns Nicole M. about state parks, making private campgrounds like Scenic Mountain RV Park better for one-night stays.

Site selection considerations: Carefully research sites when booking. "Be advised not all sites are directly on the water, so make reservations early," recommends Fain H. about Old Salem Park. Waterfront sites fill quickly, especially during peak summer season.

    Tips for camping with families

Beach and playground access: High Falls State Park Campground offers dedicated recreation areas. "This campground is great if you have kids. The playground is centrally located. Trails are easy to get to and the falls are a nice sight," explains Bille W.

Multi-generational camping spots: Old Salem Park accommodates family traditions. "We have been going here since I was a kid. Now I take my kids to old salem. Its great. They have playgrounds and a beach. A Pavillion area for party's and lots of lake to fish on. We love it," shares Bridget S.

Campground cleanliness: Lawrence Shoals Campground maintains high standards for families. "This area is clean well kept and child friendly. Bathrooms/showers are clean. Playground area is nicely kept and safe. Ground keeps are friendly and helpful," reports Leigh R.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling preparation: Bring leveling blocks to most campgrounds. "Site 80 was pretty flat and easy to get level with plenty of room. Site is right on the main road but that surprisingly didn't bother us," explains Jeffrey L. about Old Salem Park, though site quality varies throughout the region.

Access considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging entry points. "Be careful and follow the Campground signs and not your GPS because you might come in a different way and have to navigate an overpass that, for some rigs, is too short!" warns Debbie K. about Hard Labor Creek State Park Campground.

Seasonal planning: Fall offers optimal camping conditions. "Autumn is beautiful but we were probably a week or two early for the full color change of the trees. The weather was a little warm for Oct./Nov.," notes Mike B. at Lawrence Shoals, highlighting the prime camping season for Eatonton area campgrounds.
