    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

    Wells State Park Campground

    Rustic but not for RVs

Chose this spot to give us a rest on a trip to Canada (and again to go back to Maine to complete the vacation after we had truck trouble). Chose a pull-through to save time and effort. The first time we chose site 1 (pull through). This past weekend we chose site 38 (pull through).

A few weeks ago when we visited, site 1 was close to the entry gate, but was very confusing as a pull through. I just backed the trailer in. The next morning we saw that the "pull through" had not been maintained in several seasons. Tree limbs and brush intruded on the driveway. There was no way to get a truck and trailer through that without damage.

Yesterday we tried site 38. We had to take the camp road around the entire park, then enter the "loop" section. Even the "main" roads required my wife to watch as I cleared tree trunks; it was difficult to snake our little trailer around the bends. The driveway to site 38 was a mess. Tree limbs and brush invaded the drive, and there was nowhere level on the whole site. I used a record 9 blocks to get 4 levels high on the downhill wheel. When leaving we had to go out through the adjoining site, because there was no way we'd be able to make the turn out of the site onto the 10' wide tote road because of the trees.

A surcharge which makes it $50/night for non-MA residents, plus, no dump station on site and $7 for four pieces of firewood (go to the Walmart 2 miles away instead) will have us skip this place in the future, even if it's in a convenient place.

For those looking to vacation here. There was minimal cell phone coverage with Verizon. I could check messages but wouldn't try to stream. The highway is very loud (I-90 is across the lake). There are a lot of boggy areas and swamps which, although pretty, grew a lot of mosquitoes that kept my wife indoors. A lot of sites were fairly large and private. The beach area is close to the lower sites. Bathrooms and showers were tight and needed updating, but cleaned.

    Highland Campground

    Older but lots to do

The campground is older, and the roads/driveways need work. For those looking for newer facilities, this isn't the place. There are no 50 amp sites. The rec hall and the bath houses are old, but we don't mind the old fashioned spots at times. Reminds me of camping as a kid. There are a lot of activities for the kids and adults. Shuffleboard, bocci ball, fishing, bingo, playground, pit luck dinners, etc. There is wifi available.

There are a lot of seasonal campers which can sometimes feel like you're intruding on their space. There is a page of rules to follow, the seasonals ignore them.

There is no black water hookup, only gray water. You have to have them clean out the black or dump on the way out.

The region experiences distinct seasonal changes, with warm summers averaging 85°F and colorful fall foliage seasons that draw campers during peak periods. Most campgrounds operate seasonally from May through mid-October, with limited winter RV camping options.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Wilderness Lake Park provides a small lake with catch-and-release fishing. "The lake was quiet and we saw kids swimming in it in the morning. There was a hiking trail on the property and the host mentioned they were building a Disc Golf course on the property," notes one visitor.

Amusement parks: Lake Compounce Campground provides access to Connecticut's oldest amusement park. "It is part of the Lake Compounce Amusement Park. Stayed in September 2021. CG is pretty empty during the week and gets busy during the weekend," explains a visitor.

Regional exploration: Camp at Prospect Mountain Campground for access to western Massachusetts attractions. "The staff I encountered were all very friendly and helpful. It looked like the sites were close together, but I was there before there were leaves on the trees and could see how there would be more privacy once they filled out."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Sun Outdoors Mystic receives positive reviews for its maintenance. "The grounds are clean and well maintained, the bathrooms and showers are spotless and newly painted. Our site didn't have sewer, but the electric and water were working fine," reports one camper.

Quality of sites: Campers appreciate the well-maintained sites at Aces High RV Park. "Clean, well-maintained, and level site with concrete pad and patio. Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should," states one reviewer. The campground maintains both pull-through and back-in waterfront sites.

Quiet atmosphere: Many campgrounds maintain peaceful environments for relaxing getaways. "Quaint little campground. Not many tenting sites but along a beautiful lake. Pets allowed," says a visitor to Wilderness Lake Park. Most RV parks enforce quiet hours starting at 10 PM.

Proximity to attractions: Campgrounds strategically position themselves near regional attractions. "This park is in a great location for exploring Mystic. You are close to downtown, the aquarium, Mystic Seaport and other attractions," notes a Sun Outdoors Mystic camper.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most RV sites near West Hartford require advance booking, especially from June through October. The limited number of year-round facilities means winter reservations should be made 2-3 months in advance.

Cash-only policies: Some smaller campgrounds have specific payment requirements. "To reserve, fill out the form on the website and you'll get a confirmation. You can pay at the office when you check in. They'll also bring firewood to your site," explains a Wilderness Lake Park visitor. Another notes: "Heads up, they are cash or Venmo only so be prepared."

Site layout variations: Campground designs vary significantly across the region. "The sites were a little close together, but being able to fish and catching 2 decent-sized largemouth bass made everything all ok!!" reports a camper at Rudd Pond Area — Taconic State Park. At Lake Compounce Campground, "the sites were long so even though you face your neighbor, the sites were long enough that our door wasn't directly across from our neighbor."

Cell service considerations: Connectivity varies by location. "Cell reception is not great. Camp link Wifi for a fee is workable unless you need to do zoom calls," notes a camper at Thousand Trails Sturbridge. Some campgrounds offer premium WiFi for additional fees.

Tips for camping with families

Children's activities: Prospect Mountain Campground offers dedicated family programming. "Prospects mountain is a great campground for families with younger kids. They have activities every weekend such as dances, bingo, hayrides. They also have a great pool, playground and pond for fishing."

Playground facilities: Lake Compounce Campground maintains child-friendly amenities. "They have a small playground, activities, tennis court, basketball. Not to mention its next to the amusement park," notes one camper, though they add that "the tent spots are small and close together."

Safety considerations: Most family-oriented campgrounds maintain gated access and regular security patrols. "This campground is only years old. Sites were large enough for RV. No privacy, but tent sites were ok. Few showers for number of campsites, but very clean," states a Lake Compounce camper.
