    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    Wawaloam Campground

    Family friendly, great campstore, quiet

We stayed here from a Tuesday to Thursday with our 21ft travel trailer & our dog. We had site 50. It was private, a great size & has water/electric. We had good cover on our site & the area our site was in was super quiet. There are both seasonal and regular sites on this campground. The camp store has everything you might need. The front gate staff are friendly and helpful. There seemed to be lots of activities on the weekends & it's definitely a family friendly/kid friendly spot. Dog friendly too! Lots of other campers had their dogs w them. We used this as our home base to visit Newport, which is about 35 min from the campground.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

    Fishermens Memorial State Park Campground

    Last minute trip

Rainy nasty October weekend but nonetheless facilities were spotless. Hookups were awesome and easy. Layout is amazing, mostly pull through and pet friendly. Definitely a summer destination next year.

Guide to Old Saybrook Center

RV campgrounds near Old Saybrook Center, Connecticut provide access to southern New England's coastal landscape, with most sites situated within 30 miles of Long Island Sound. The area experiences moderate temperatures typically ranging from 70-85°F in summer months, with higher humidity near the shoreline. Seasonal variations affect campground availability, with most parks operating May through October.

What to do

Beach access: Rocky Neck State Park Campground offers campsites a short walk from its sandy beach. "Every site had a central bathhouse and they have a variety of tree covering options for each campers preferences. The campsite is only a short walk from the beach and available mountain bike and hiking trails," notes one visitor.

Marina activities: Waterfront camping at Crocker's Boatyard provides unique harbor views and water access. "We were here on an extremely hot and humid couple days. It was great to have electric and water hookups. Also being able to use their pool with our grandchildren was great," mentions a reviewer who appreciated watching "the goings on at a boat yard."

Local attractions: Historic sites and museums are accessible from most campgrounds. "We took the ferry to Block Island which was also walking distance from the boat yard. Block Island a must see," reports one Crocker's Boatyard guest who also visited Fort Trumbull, noting it was "a very nice place to visit and learn."

What campers like

Spacious sites: Aces High RV Park receives praise for its well-designed layout. "Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it," one camper explains.

Well-maintained facilities: Many campgrounds maintain clean amenities. At Sun Outdoors Mystic, "The bathrooms in the campground were newer and immaculate. This 'resort' has lots of amenities that would occupy kids time... The mini golf course was actually really nice and not the run-down homemade ones that you usually see at campgrounds," reports one visitor.

Pet accommodations: Several parks offer pet-friendly features. At Aces High, one camper mentioned "a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it!" The park also offers "plenty of area to walk" for pets, making it suitable for travelers with animals.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Summer weekends fill quickly, particularly at waterfront sites. "The sites are VERY close, but the people are nice and we had a great stay. It is a quick drive to the beach, we loved Westerly & Misquamicut Beaches," notes a camper at Ashaway RV Resort, suggesting early booking for peak seasons.

Site variations: Quality varies significantly between sites at the same campground. At Sun Outdoors Mystic, "Our site was a nice long, level pull-thru. Hook-ups were placed in ideal locations for the pad which was gravel." The park also offers tent camping options that "have a number of nice sites but do not have hookups but are located near a bathhouse."

Seasonal schedule: Many parks close earlier than advertised during fall. Rocky Neck State Park Campground operates "May 26 to September 29," which means fall travelers need alternative options. Most private campgrounds stay open through mid-October.

Tips for camping with families

Pool amenities: Look for campgrounds with maintained swimming facilities. At Countryside RV Park, "Water, electric & sewer sites. Very quite, rules are in-forced. This is camping, if you're looking for entertainment bring your own!"

Playground access: Rocky Neck offers child-friendly amenities beyond camping. "Great facilities. Beautiful beach. Sometimes crowded," warns a visitor, who still considered it "worth it" with a "nice food shack" and being a "great family place."

Recreational options: Sun Outdoors Mystic provides family activities on-site. The facility features "an arcade, theater area" and sites that can accommodate groups. One reviewer noted "You are close to downtown, the aquarium, Mystic Seaport and other attractions," making it convenient for family outings.

Tips from RVers

Leveling considerations: Most RV campgrounds near Old Saybrook Center feature prepared sites, though quality varies. At Sun Outdoors Mystic, campers appreciate "Hook-ups placed in ideal locations for the pad which was gravel. The cable tv worked well and many sites would accommodate satellite users."

Site selection strategy: Choose based on specific needs rather than general location. At Aces High RV Park, one camper paid "$150/night for a 'Premium Waterfront FHU Site' on the lake" and noted it included a "level concrete pad and patio, clean and well-maintained utilities, and beautiful view."

Utility reliability: Electric amperage varies between parks. Crocker's Boatyard offers both 30-amp and 50-amp service, which visitors found reliable even during summer heat. "It was great to have electric and water hookups," mentioned one RVer during "extremely hot and humid" days.
