Best RV Parks & Resorts near North Westchester, CT

Several RV parks near North Westchester provide full-hookup sites and varied amenities for motorhome travelers. Aces High RV Park in East Lyme features spacious pull-through RV pads with both 50-amp electrical and sewer connections, while Sun Outdoors Mystic (formerly Seaport RV Resort) operates from April through October with water and electric hookups. Most sites accommodate larger motorhomes with gravel or concrete pads measuring approximately 50x30 feet. "Clean, well-maintained, and level site with concrete pad and patio. Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should," noted one camper about Aces High. Countryside RV Park in Griswold offers big-rig friendly sites with 50-amp service and sewer connections from May through mid-October.

Advance reservations are strongly recommended during summer months and fall foliage season when parks reach capacity. Many RV sites throughout the region provide sanitary dump stations, though availability varies by location. For travelers needing propane service, options are limited as most parks don't offer on-site filling. A review mentioned that "the campground was very clean and well taken care of" at Sun Outdoors Mystic, though several parks have seasonal limitations with most closing between late October and mid-April. Cell service quality fluctuates throughout the area, with Verizon typically providing the most reliable coverage. Pet policies generally allow dogs with standard restrictions, and many parks feature dedicated dog walking areas, particularly at Aces High which includes a creek area suitable for dog swimming.

    Douglas Forest RV Resort

    Awesome Campground In The Forest

We had an incredible stay at Douglas Forest RV Resort! From the moment we arrived, we were blown away by how peaceful and well-maintained everything was. The RV sites are spacious and easy to navigate, with full hookups and strong Wi-Fi— a big plus for us since we work remotely on the road. What really sets this place apart is the location. You’re literally steps away from Douglas State Forest, which made morning hikes and evening strolls absolutely magical. It’s pet-friendly too, and our dog loved the wooded trails and open areas. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the camp store had everything we needed. Even though the recreation area is still being built, the amenities already in place more than made up for it. We’re already planning our next trip for summer when the pool opens! If you’re looking for a relaxing spot that blends nature with convenience, look no further. Douglas Forest RV Resort is a true hidden gem!

    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Wawaloam Campground

    Family friendly, great campstore, quiet

We stayed here from a Tuesday to Thursday with our 21ft travel trailer & our dog. We had site 50. It was private, a great size & has water/electric. We had good cover on our site & the area our site was in was super quiet. There are both seasonal and regular sites on this campground. The camp store has everything you might need. The front gate staff are friendly and helpful. There seemed to be lots of activities on the weekends & it's definitely a family friendly/kid friendly spot. Dog friendly too! Lots of other campers had their dogs w them. We used this as our home base to visit Newport, which is about 35 min from the campground.

Guide to North Westchester

RV campgrounds near North Westchester, Connecticut offer seasonal access through wooded terrain and riverside settings. Sites typically provide utility connections including water and sewer hookups across campgrounds that operate primarily from spring through mid-autumn. Campsites range from open field configurations to more private wooded settings, with varying proximity to hiking trails and water features.

What to do

River recreation: 0.5 mile access trail at Salt Rock Campground leads to water activities. "We took a short walk/hike and were able to make it to a river where we floated in tubes and relaxed for the day," notes a camper who visited during a holiday weekend.

Movie nights in summer months: Some campgrounds host outdoor film screenings. "Saturday nights there is a 'movie night' on the field, and it's right off sites 1-7," mentions a Salt Rock reviewer, providing additional evening entertainment options.

Kayaking nearby waterways: Several campgrounds offer water access for paddling. "One day we launched our kayaks north of the drawbridge in town at the public launch and paddled down to Mystic Seaport which was fun to see the historic boats from the water," shares a visitor to the Mystic area.

Field activities and hiking options: Open recreation areas for group gatherings exist at Timber Creek RV Campground and similar properties. "Nice open field for activities," notes a Salt Rock visitor, highlighting spaces for outdoor games.

What campers like

Pet-friendly amenities: Dog owners appreciate designated pet areas. "There is a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it!" mentions a reviewer at Aces High RV Park.

Spacious sites with separation: Some campgrounds offer more room between neighbors. "Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors," notes an Aces High visitor, describing the site layout.

Natural wildlife viewing: Many campsites offer nature observation opportunities. "Beautiful pond and natural setting with lots of ducks, geese, chickens, and wild birds," writes a camper about their experience at a local RV park.

Pool facilities: Swimming options vary by location and season. "Nice staff, nice pool & facilities. Also, this is open year round," mentions a reviewer about site amenities available during warmer months.

What you should know

Site privacy varies significantly: Many campgrounds feature open layouts with limited separation. "You can basically see every Campsite from anywhere in the park, barely any trees in between sites to add privacy," notes a Salt Rock reviewer.

Seasonal operation limitations: Most RV parks in the region have specific operating dates. "We had site B1, which was water and electric. Close to the pond. Not directly at the pond, though," shares a camper who stayed at Sturbridge RV Resort in October.

Bathroom quality inconsistency: Facility conditions vary by campground. "Bathrooms are atrocious - stall doors have no locks, metal fittings are rusty, paint is peeling, showers are lukewarm and temp cannot be changed," reports a Salt Rock visitor.

Noise levels fluctuate: Weekend activity can create sound disturbances. "If you DON'T enjoy privacy, or peace and quiet, or rules being enforced, such as quiet hours...then you will maybe like it here," cautions a reviewer about their experience at a state campground.

Tips for camping with families

Playground availability: Some campgrounds offer dedicated play areas. "The playground was a hit for our kids!" mentions a Thousand Trails Sturbridge visitor.

Family recreation options: Swimming facilities provide entertainment for children. "Cool pond for paddle boats and canoeing! Family friendly," notes a camper about Sturbridge's amenities.

Group camping sections: Several properties feature designated areas for multiple families. "We had a group from work head out here. We reserved Coyote Run, and had the field to ourselves," shares a Salt Rock camper, highlighting spaces suitable for gatherings.

Proximity to attractions: Location relative to regional activities matters for family trips. "This park is in a great location for exploring Mystic. You are close to downtown, the aquarium, Mystic Seaport and other attractions," explains a reviewer about convenient sightseeing options.

Tips from RVers

Site surface conditions: RV sites feature various pad materials. "Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it," reports a visitor to Countryside RV Park.

Cell reception variability: Digital connectivity varies by location. "Cell reception is not great. Camp link Wifi for a fee is workable unless you need to do zoom calls," notes a Sturbridge reviewer, providing connectivity information important for working travelers.

Campground layout considerations: Site positioning affects privacy and accessibility. "We camped here with friends and got one of the 'buddy sites' so our patios faced each other. I like this configuration when camping with friends but would not like this site if we did not know our neighbors," mentions a camper, describing specialized site arrangements.

Drive time to regional destinations: RV campgrounds provide access to multiple attractions. "Nice campground, a mix of seasonal & short-term visitors. The sites are VERY close, but the people are nice and we had a great stay. It is a quick drive to the beach, we loved Westerly & Misquamicut Beaches," shares a visitor to the region.
