Best RV Parks & Resorts near Middle Haddam, CT

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Several full-service RV parks operate within 30 miles of Middle Haddam, Connecticut, accommodating various motorhome sizes and preferences. Aces High RV Park in East Lyme features concrete pad sites and lakefront options with full hookups, including 50-amp electrical service and sewer connections. Sun Outdoors Mystic provides spacious pull-through sites that accommodate large rigs, though buddy sites may feel crowded when traveling solo. Salem Farms Campground offers 189 RV sites with electric and water hookups, operating from May through Columbus Day. Totoket Valley RV Park in North Branford maintains 50-amp service and sewer connections on level sites with adequate spacing. "Sites are large and it's very clean with beautiful park grounds. Each site has a picnic table and the hookups were placed in ideal locations for the pad," according to one visitor.

Most RV parks in the region require advance reservations, particularly during summer and fall foliage seasons. Between I-95 and Route 9, accessing campgrounds generally involves navigating local roads that may present challenges for larger rigs. Many parks provide on-site dump stations, though some like Wolf's Den Family Campground only offer honey wagon service with grey water dumps at individual sites. Cell service varies significantly throughout the area—Verizon users report single-bar LTE coverage at some locations. Propane filling stations are limited at campgrounds, requiring trips to nearby towns. During shoulder seasons, reduced amenities may impact stays as pools, camp stores, and water features typically close by mid-October, with only a few parks like Ashaway RV Resort remaining open year-round.

    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

    Wawaloam Campground

    Family friendly, great campstore, quiet

We stayed here from a Tuesday to Thursday with our 21ft travel trailer & our dog. We had site 50. It was private, a great size & has water/electric. We had good cover on our site & the area our site was in was super quiet. There are both seasonal and regular sites on this campground. The camp store has everything you might need. The front gate staff are friendly and helpful. There seemed to be lots of activities on the weekends & it's definitely a family friendly/kid friendly spot. Dog friendly too! Lots of other campers had their dogs w them. We used this as our home base to visit Newport, which is about 35 min from the campground.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

What to do

River fishing access: Lake Compounce Campground offers proximity to both amusement park attractions and natural water features. "Great time! Would have been nice if they had a place to swim (in the camping area) besides for at the main park," notes one camper.

Local history exploration: Within 30 minutes of Salem Farms Campground are Devil's Hopyard and Gillette Castle. "Devil's Hopyard and Gillette Castle are close and Rocky Neck State Park is about a 25 minute ride," shares a visitor who camps there with grandchildren.

Mini golf outings: Several campgrounds feature mini golf courses as recreation options. At Sun Outdoors Mystic, "The mini golf course was actually really nice and not the run-down homemade ones that you usually see at campgrounds."

Walking trails: Many RV parks feature walking paths through wooded areas. One reviewer at Sturbridge RV Resort mentioned: "There is a huge area of woods with a walking trail starting at the edge of the campground. I enjoyed stretching my legs."

What campers like

Well-maintained sites: Campers frequently comment on the quality of sites at Aces High RV Park. "Clean, well-maintained, and level site with concrete pad and patio. Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should," notes a satisfied guest.

Wildlife viewing: Natural settings provide opportunities to observe local wildlife. "Beautiful pond and natural setting with lots of ducks, geese, chickens, and wild birds," mentions a visitor to Aces High RV Park.

Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness matters to campers. One Lake Compounce visitor noted, "Clean bathrooms and nice store. CG is pretty empty during the week and gets busy during the weekend."

Swimming options: Many campgrounds feature pools for recreation. A Salem Farms camper shared, "We tent close to the restroom and the pool, which are very clean. We go mid week and the special is pay 2 nights, get third night free."

What you should know

Seasonal availability: Most campgrounds in the region close by mid-October. Totoket Valley RV Park remains open longer than some, while Ashaway RV Resort offers year-round camping options.

Site spacing varies: Proximity to neighbors differs by campground and site type. One Ashaway RV Resort visitor noted, "The sites are VERY close, but the people are nice and we had a great stay."

Cell coverage challenges: Digital connectivity can be limited. At Sturbridge RV Resort, "Cell reception is not great. Camp link Wifi for a fee is workable unless you need to do zoom calls."

Reservation requirements: Many campgrounds require advance planning, especially during summer and fall. Salem Farms Campground offers a midweek special: "pay 2 nights, get third night free" according to a regular visitor.

Tips for camping with families

Consider buddy sites: For group camping, specific site configurations work best. At Countryside RV Park, the family-focused atmosphere makes it "Connecticut's Best Kept Secret. Beautiful, family owned & run, quiet, large sites."

Look for playground proximity: When tent camping with children, location matters. A Salem Farms visitor shared, "We went tent camping with 3 other families. Loved the tent area and how close it was for the kids to use the pool and facilities."

Check activity schedules: Family programming varies by season and day of week. "We felt safe allowing the kids to go ride bikes and go mini golfing. We will definitely be back next year!" reports a family at Salem Farms.

Verify swimming availability: Not all water features operate year-round. Lake Compounce Campground connects to an amusement park with water activities, but as one reviewer noted, having swimming options directly in the camping area would improve the experience.

Tips from RVers

Hookup placement matters: Review sites for utility configuration before booking. At Totoket Valley RV Park, a visitor appreciated the "Small campground with good electrical, clean water, sewer and a friendly owner. Each site has grass and a picnic table."

Dump station availability: Not all sites have sewer connections. Lake Compounce Campground provides alternatives: "None of the sites have sewer, but there is a dump station on the way out."

Site length considerations: Larger rigs need appropriate spaces. Bear Creek Campground offers "Easy entry, long pull thrus. You will face your neighbor door to door but enough room between you don't feel invaded."

Seasonal discounts: Look for off-peak pricing. Salem Farms' midweek special can save money, while many RV parks near Middle Haddam, Connecticut offer lower rates outside summer and fall foliage periods.
