Situated 25 miles from the Connecticut coastline, Higganum offers campers access to diverse ecosystems ranging from deciduous forests to riverside camping areas. The area's moderate climate with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F makes camping comfortable from May through October. Several RV parks near Higganum accommodate both short-term travelers and seasonal campers with varying hookup options and site configurations.
What to do
Kayaking at Rocky Neck State Park Campground: This state park includes water access for paddlers and a sandy beach within walking distance of campsites. "My family has camped at Rocky Neck every year since I was a child. Every site had a central bathhouse and they have a variety of tree covering options for each campers preferences. The campsite is only a short walk from the beach and available mountain bike and hiking trails," shares Mauricio R.
Fishing ponds: Many campgrounds feature stocked ponds for casual anglers. "Fishing areas for the kids. Spots are well organized and no issues with hookups. Propane is available at the store," notes Tom S. about Aces High RV Park.
Visit Mystic attractions: The historic seaport and aquarium make popular day trips from camping areas. "This park is in a great location for exploring Mystic. You are close to downtown, the aquarium, Mystic Seaport and other attractions," reports Nancy W. from Sun Outdoors Mystic.
Hiking in Devil's Hopyard: Located near Salem Farms Campground, this state park features waterfalls and hiking trails. "Devils Hopyard and Gillette Castle are close and Rocky Neck State Park is about a 25 minute ride," mentions Heather P.
What campers like
Clean facilities: Campers frequently mention bathroom cleanliness as a priority. "Bathrooms were clean. We had site #4 (sunny) then moved to #38 (shady). Both spots were quiet, music low and people minded their business. Equal mix of RVs big and small as well as many tents," notes Nita D. at Rocky Neck.
Pool access: Swimming pools provide recreation when beaches aren't accessible. "We felt safe allowing the kids to go ride bikes and go mini golfing. We loved the tent area and how close it was for the kids to use the pool and facilities. Everything was clean and well kept," shares Tara K. about Salem Farms Campground.
Waterfront sites: Premium lakeside sites offer scenic views despite higher costs. "We paid $150/night for a 'Premium Waterfront FHU Site' on the lake. A bit pricey, but really nice site including level concrete pad and patio, clean and well-maintained utilities, and beautiful view," explains Matt S. about Aces High RV Park.
Well-maintained grounds: Campers appreciate attention to landscaping and site preparation. "The sites are large and it's very clean and a beautiful park. Daniella treats us like part of her family and the staff are always so helpful," says Tasha O. about Aces High RV Park.
What you should know
Off-season considerations: Many RV parks near Higganum operate seasonally. "Seaport RV is a great, spacious campground with many amenities and a location close to Mystic. Our stay was in the spring before their busy season started so some things like the pool and water features were closed," notes Laura L.
Limited firewood availability: Not all campgrounds sell firewood on-site. "Sites include one paved parking spot (ours was very muddy) a fire pit and a picnic table. No water or electric hookup. Wi-fi not available at this campground. Fire wood is sold at camp office. There is no store in park - no ice either," explains Nita D. about Rocky Neck State Park.
Varying site privacy: Privacy between sites differs significantly between campgrounds. "Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it," reports April L. about Aces High RV Park.
Variable cell service: Connectivity varies by location. "It wasn't too loud here in October. Had site B1, which was water and electric. Close to the pond. Cell reception is not great. Camp link Wifi for a fee is workable unless you need to do zoom calls," mentions Mara S. about Thousand Trails Sturbridge.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Look for campgrounds with play equipment near campsites. "We had a great time relaxing around the campfire with another family. The playground was a hit for our kids!" shares alissa T. about Thousand Trails Sturbridge.
Mid-week discounts: Some campgrounds offer special rates for weekday stays. "I try to go here every summer with my two preteen grandsons. We tent close to the restroom and the pool, which are very clean. We go mid week and the special is pay 2 nights, get third night free," advises Heather P. about Salem Farms Campground.
Wildlife watching: Parks offer opportunities to observe local fauna. "The skunks are friendly! Great for kids!" warns Jean V. about Rocky Neck State Park, while another camper mentions "beautiful pond and natural setting with lots of ducks, geese, chickens, and wild birds" at Aces High RV Park.
Dog-friendly areas: Some campgrounds provide special amenities for pets. "There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it!" notes April L. about Aces High RV Park.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: Concrete pads provide the most stable foundation. "Clean, well-maintained, and level site with concrete pad and patio (I love a clean, level concrete pad!). Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should," shares Matt S. about Aces High RV Park.
Pull-through availability: Many RV parks in the region offer easy-access sites. "Many pull-thru sites, maybe 20 back ins on a pond. Nice staff, nice pool & facilities. Also, this is open year round," notes Steve K. about Aces High RV Park.
Year-round options: Some RV parks near Higganum remain open during winter. "Small campground with good electrical, clean water, sewer and a friendly owner. Each site has grass and a picnic table. It's a perfect campground for seeing the local area or even catching the train to New York City," explains Tara N. about Totoket Valley RV Park.
Transportation considerations: RV parks offer convenient access to regional attractions. "Not much of a traditional campground but a great place stay and explore the town of mystic," notes Benjamin A. about Sun Outdoors Mystic, highlighting its value as a base for regional exploration.
