Best Cabin Camping near Hanover, CT

Cabins near Hanover offer varying comfort levels from rustic to fully furnished accommodations. Hopeville Pond State Park Campground provides cabin rentals with basic amenities, while Mystic KOA features deluxe cabins equipped with linens, cookware, utensils, kitchen essentials, and full-sized refrigerators. Most park cabins include bunk beds without mattresses, picnic tables, and outdoor fire rings. Some waterfront cabins at Burlingame State Park Campground offer scenic pond views. Odetah Camping Resort and Strawberry Park both feature cabin options with more modern amenities. "The cabin was cute and clean and furnished with linens, cookware, utensils, kitchen essentials, keurig coffee maker/pods, and full-sized fridge," noted one visitor about their Mystic KOA experience.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. State park cabins typically provide minimal furnishings with two sets of bunks requiring campers to bring their own mattresses or sleeping pads. Private campgrounds like Hidden Acres and Waters Edge Family Campground offer more equipped cabin rentals with electricity and some kitchen facilities. Pet policies vary significantly between locations, with Mystic KOA allowing pets in certain cabins while state parks often prohibit pets entirely. According to one camper, "If you don't have a tent, consider reserving one of their rustic cabins. These offer two sets of bunks (no mattresses) and a small porch with a picnic table and fire ring outside."

Most cabin rentals require guests to bring bedding, pillows, towels, and personal items regardless of accommodation type. Kitchen provisions vary widely, with state park cabins typically offering no indoor cooking facilities while private resort cabins may include microwave ovens, coffee makers, and basic cookware. Campground stores at Odetah, Strawberry Park, and Mystic KOA stock essential supplies, though selection is limited. Many campgrounds provide firewood for purchase on-site for outdoor cooking, and most cabin sites include picnic tables and fire rings. Several campgrounds feature bath houses with showers and toilets within walking distance of cabin areas, though cleanliness can be inconsistent during peak season.

    Burlingame State Park Campground

Huge campground, not many level sites.

I've never camped in Rhode Island, so I was curious to see what a state park campground had to offer. Rates are reasonable for state residents, but quite high if you are out-of-state, given the amenities. There are no hookups, but dump stations are available. Bathrooms have flush toilets and coin-operated showers. There's a small beach at the pond, a boat ramp, and proximity to wildlife refuges and the ocean. It's a HUGE campground, with 700 sites and 20 cabins. Canoes are available to rent.

There's a nice playground, a camp store, and a naturalists cabin. Trails are available for hiking and biking. The beach is sandy and there's a small parking lot there, but I suspect most people walk to it. No alcohol allowed.

I didn't see more than a handful of level sites, with varying degrees of slope, but many are quite large. If you have an RV, plan to level; if you have a tent, be sure to bring good mattresses to protect you from the roots and rocks and orient your head to the uphill side. Most of the sites have some degree of visual separation from their neighbors, but there are places where it's hard to tell where one site ends and the next one starts. Site have fire rings and picnic tables, but if you plan to cook over the fire, bring your own grate or plan to use sticks and/or aluminum foil.

If you don't have a tent, consider reserving one of their rustic cabins. These offer two sets of bunks (no mattresses) and a small porch with a picnic table and fire ring outside. Some are located along the pond.

3-4 bar cell phone coverage. No road traffic. East Beach is nearby, but parking fills early.

    Mystic KOA

Awesome Sunsets at the Mystic KOA

Didn’t quite feel like camping, but it was still a lovely weekend away at the Mystic KOA. We decided to head down to check out the aquarium and stayed at a deluxe cabin. It was cute and clean and furnished with linens, cookware, utensils, kitchen essentials, keurig coffee maker/pods, and full-sized fridge. Only complaint was an odd, musty smell we couldn’t quite figure out.

The grounds are large with vast amounts of space. Be forewarned that it’s right off of 95, and the sound definitely carries. Trees are sparse in areas, but the sunsets were a nice trade off. Amenities seemed nice from what we could tell - cool outdoor movie screen, pools and playground, though we certainly didn’t get to enjoy these things in February.

    Getaway Machimoodus

    First Time Glamper!

Getaway is fabulous! My first glamping experience was a winner! Machimoodus is one of the newest outposts just outside Boston and NYC. My bf and I went during one of the snowiest weekends all winter, but it was completely worth it!

First of all, the huge picture window in the cabin is AMAZING. It is just so rejuvenating waking up to freshly fallen snow on the trees - corny I know, but 100% accurate. The cabin was beautiful and rustic, and outfitted with cookware, dishes, a Bluetooth capable radio, essentials like coffee for purchase, books and a shovel for the snow.

Since the outpost was new, the fire pit was brand new, and despite the snow, we were able to cook on it. Very easy to use.

Only critiques would be the lackluster water pressure in the shower and how icy the walkway leading up from the driveway got in the cold weather. The water pressure was a small price to pay, however, and the icy walkway is resolved easily enough wearing micro-spikes.

I can’t recommend enough. It can be a pricy excursion, but the outposts are established in very beautiful settings. I cannot wait to check out more!

    Mystic KOA

    Wasp Breeding Ground!

Pros: Helpful staff, morning garbage pickup, excellent laundry facility, plenty of activities and amenities for children. Cons: Wasps!! Wasps everywhere!! We did our best to keep them at bay by lighting some sage but they were persistent. Not much privacy back in the tent/cabin areas, camp sites very close together and people have the ability to stare right into your site.

    Rocky Neck State Park Campground

Shady Spot walking distance from Beach

I’ve lived in CT all my life but never used the Rocky Neck State Park Campground until now.

The campgrounds are named after water fowl: Crane, Egret, Osprey, Heron etc...We stayed in Egret. We camped at site #4 (sunny) then moved to #38 (shady).

Both spots were quiet, music low and people minded their business. Equal mix of RVs big and small as well as many tents.

Bathhouses and toilets were not as cleaned as I would have liked but passable. Coronavirus social distancing required.

Sites include one paved parking spot (ours was very muddy) a fire pit and a picnic table. No water or electric hookup. Wi-fi not available at this campground. Fire wood is sold at camp office. There is no store in park - no ice either.

A lot of you children. Short walk to Rock Neck beach. Nature Center has movies on weekends for kids.

Anyone with kayaks can’t easily get to boat launch. It’s 4-5 miles by car at 4 mile river boat launch. See photos.

    Aces High RV Park

    Hammonasset State Park Campground

large family friendly campground with beach access

Hammonasset Beach State Park Campground is huge, family-friendly, and has direct beach access from the campground. There is no lifeguard on duty at the campground beach but lifeguards patrol the beach a mile or so north within the park. Smaller (car-top) boats can be launched from this area as well.

The campsites do NOT include a fire pit (or grill). You must bring your own or there are fire tub rentals available at the campground store.

The park includes a Nature Center complete with exhibits and activities, and hiking trails. Bald eagles can be seen on the nature reserve.

Expect long lines at the state park entrance fee station on the weekend if the weather is nice.

    Brialee Family Campground

    Large Family Campground

Fairly large campground. Tent sites available but mostly RV/Campers. WiFi in common areas isn’t great so if you’re planning on working during some down time, this isn’t the place. Nice hiking around the area. Bathrooms are clean. Good for kids/families.

Guide to Hanover

Cabin rentals near Hanover, Connecticut range from rustic shelters to fully furnished accommodations within a 30-mile radius. The region sits at elevations between 200-600 feet within New England's temperate forest zone, with seasonal cabin availability typically running April through October. Winter availability is limited to year-round facilities at private campgrounds.

What to do

Waterfront activities: Hopeville Pond State Park Campground offers fishing, paddling, and swimming from their tent-only "canoe sites" section. "These are tent only. You park and walk about 100 yards to the site. There are only four sites in this secluded section of the campground. Sites CN02, CN03 and CN04 have direct waterfront on the pond. You can launch kayaks, paddle boards, etc right from the site!" reports one visitor.

River tubing: Hidden Acres Campground visitors enjoy river tubing directly from their campsites. "We tubed down river, fished the pond, swam in the pool, did the hay ride, even attended the dance at night. Definitely be sure to grab a snack at the food hit they have. Very good food," notes one camper who visited with three families.

Hiking trails: Campers can access miles of forest trails from several campgrounds. "This park also has plenty of trails for hiking and geocaching. The pond has some really big fish, but it's heavily covered with lily pads and there are a lot of submerged trees. If you're going fishing here, a weedless rig is the way to go," explains a Hopeville Pond visitor.

What campers like

Resort amenities: Odetah Camping Resort receives high marks for its full range of facilities. "This place has everything from a pool, splash pad, boats, food, ice cream, lots of activities, friendly helpful staff, delivery to your site from the camp store and nice shaded spacious sites," shares one satisfied guest. Several campgrounds offer similar amenities.

Halloween camping: Several campgrounds host special seasonal events. "We went two years in a row each on Halloween! They had great amenities and activities for the kids. Plus a costume contest and tricker treating. Very enjoyable time. Hope to go back again," writes one Odetah visitor about their Halloween experience.

Outdoor recreation: Sunfox Campground gets praise for its facilities. "Super clean, friendly environment very nice playground and pool plus a nice lake to swim and fish in," reports a recent visitor. Multiple campgrounds feature similar water activities with varying cleanliness reports.

What you should know

Pet restrictions: Policies vary significantly between locations. "Note: Pets are not allowed at this campground!" warns one Hopeville Pond visitor, while other campgrounds allow pets with specific restrictions. Check policies before booking.

Bathroom facilities: Cleanliness and quality vary widely. Burlingame State Park Campground visitors note: "Bath houses - are usually pretty filthy, and that's because there are too many people per bath house, and people are gross," while other reviewers mention "immaculate bathrooms" at private campgrounds.

Site privacy: Most campgrounds offer a mix of secluded and open sites. "Lots of sites are even and good sized," notes one Odetah visitor, while another mentions: "The only con is the sites are not very private...at all." Request specific site types when booking cabin accommodations.

Tips for camping with families

Activity schedules: Strawberry Park organizes numerous daily activities. "The campground offers activities pretty much hourly for kids and adults to enjoy. Along with a pool, they also have a beach and a separate beach for dogs," reports one visitor, providing structure for family trips.

Rainy day options: Indoor activities become essential during inclement weather. "When my family went here it poured! And we were thankful that there were so many things to do, painting ceramics, karaoke, an arcade (at the time it had DDR which was all the rage)," shares a Strawberry Park guest.

Playground access: Request sites near play areas for convenience. "Great sites and the restrooms/showers are the cleanest I've seen anywhere. Lots of fun at the beach, kayaking on the lake or just hanging at your site. Petting zoo, craft cabin, arcade, bingo and lots more!" writes a visitor about Hidden Acres Campground.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose carefully based on your camping style. "If you want water views this is the place," notes one Ross Hill camper, while others recommend: "If you want a good visit do not stay down by the lake!!!" at Burlingame for a quieter experience.

Utility hookups: Cabin camping near Hanover offers varying electrical service. "There are sites that have water and electric hookups, but the majority of the sites have no utilities," explains a Hopeville Pond visitor, so plan accordingly for your electrical needs.

Off-season rates: Camping cabins near Hanover offer better value during shoulder seasons. "We were there the weekend after Labor Day weekend in 2014, and it was pretty quiet. Nice for biking, cute little beach, dog friendly," reports a Burlingame visitor, noting both lower rates and smaller crowds.
