    Douglas Forest RV Resort

    Awesome Campground In The Forest

We had an incredible stay at Douglas Forest RV Resort! From the moment we arrived, we were blown away by how peaceful and well-maintained everything was. The RV sites are spacious and easy to navigate, with full hookups and strong Wi-Fi— a big plus for us since we work remotely on the road. What really sets this place apart is the location. You’re literally steps away from Douglas State Forest, which made morning hikes and evening strolls absolutely magical. It’s pet-friendly too, and our dog loved the wooded trails and open areas. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the camp store had everything we needed. Even though the recreation area is still being built, the amenities already in place more than made up for it. We’re already planning our next trip for summer when the pool opens! If you’re looking for a relaxing spot that blends nature with convenience, look no further. Douglas Forest RV Resort is a true hidden gem!

    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

    Wawaloam Campground

    Family friendly, great campstore, quiet

We stayed here from a Tuesday to Thursday with our 21ft travel trailer & our dog. We had site 50. It was private, a great size & has water/electric. We had good cover on our site & the area our site was in was super quiet. There are both seasonal and regular sites on this campground. The camp store has everything you might need. The front gate staff are friendly and helpful. There seemed to be lots of activities on the weekends & it's definitely a family friendly/kid friendly spot. Dog friendly too! Lots of other campers had their dogs w them. We used this as our home base to visit Newport, which is about 35 min from the campground.

What to do

Water activities at riverside sites: Ross Hill RV Park & Campground offers sites along the Quinebaug River with water access for fishing and boating. "We took our kayaks up to the dam and fished our way back," notes one visitor about Salt Rock Campground, which provides river recreation opportunities within walking distance of campsites.

Historical attractions nearby: Sun Outdoors Mystic serves as a convenient base for visiting Mystic Seaport. "One day we launched our kayaks north of the drawbridge in town at the public launch and paddled down to Mystic Seaport which was fun to see the historic boats from the water," shares one camper who appreciates the maritime heritage.

Outdoor recreation options: Within a short drive from multiple Colchester area campgrounds, visitors can access beaches, hiking trails, and state parks. "If you're looking for a beach to sit on head to a short distance southeast to Watch Hill, Rhode Island," recommends a camper staying at Sun Outdoors Mystic, highlighting the coastal options available within driving distance.

What campers like

Spacious pull-through sites: Aces High RV Park receives high marks for their well-designed sites. "Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it," reports a satisfied camper who appreciated the layout.

Clean facilities: Many campers note the bathroom and shower facilities at RV parks near Colchester maintain good standards. At Douglas Forest RV Resort, "the bathrooms and showers are spotless and newly painted," according to a recent visitor, indicating ongoing maintenance efforts at some properties.

Natural surroundings: Salt Rock Campground features river access and hiking trails that appeal to outdoor enthusiasts. "There is also a very shallow river about 10 minutes walk from the site we were at which is absolutely beautiful, and we spent most of our time there," writes one camper who found the natural water features most appealing.

What you should know

Site configuration variations: Some campgrounds feature buddy sites designed for groups traveling together. "We camped here with friends and got one of the 'buddy sites' so our patios faced each other. I like this configuration when camping with friends but would not like this site if we did not know our neighbors," explains a Sun Outdoors Mystic guest.

Weekend noise levels: Several campgrounds experience higher noise levels during weekends. At Ross Hill Park, some campers note the atmosphere can be busy: "Campground is crowded and filled with older crowd that seem like they live here," observed one visitor, suggesting the property maintains a residential feel rather than a wilderness experience.

Varying management styles: RV parks near Colchester show inconsistent rule enforcement across properties. "Quiet hours are merely a suggestion, and folks turn up until 4AM on Friday nights," reports a Salt Rock Campground visitor, highlighting potential challenges for those seeking peaceful environments.

Tips for camping with families

Pool access considerations: Several RV parks near Colchester feature swimming pools with varying seasonal availability. "We went in early June and the pools were still closed, but we knew that when we made the reservation," notes a Salt Rock visitor, suggesting families should verify pool operations when booking early or late season stays.

Kid-friendly recreation: Countryside RV Park offers a quieter setting with limited structured activities. "Nice quite Campground, limited child activity's easy drive to lake/fishing. Close to museums, shopping. This is camping, if you're looking for entertainment bring your own!" advises one reviewer, setting appropriate expectations for family visitors.

Open field spaces: Multiple campgrounds provide field areas for group activities. Salt Rock Campground features "nice open field for activities" according to a visitor, providing space for family games away from campsites.

Tips from RVers

Utility connections quality: RV campers report well-positioned hookups at most sites. At Aces High RV Park, "Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should (other parks should come and take a look at how to do this right)," indicates a camper pleased with the layout and functionality.

"The sites are large and it's very clean and a beautiful park," reports a frequent visitor, noting the spaciousness important for larger recreational vehicles.
