      Estes Park KOA

      Nice for new campers

Took some friends here on their first ever camping trip the first weekend of Sept ‘25 and we had a great time. Convenient access to the park, quiet hours were well respected, and the tent site we stayed at (listed on the website as “best view in the campground”) did have an incredible view. We were also a bit above the rest of the sites nearby and had only a neighbor below us so it felt decently private for such a busy campground. The running water was nice to have for easing my friends into the world of camping! Camp store came in handy as well.

Specific site came with picnic table under cover as well as 4 Adirondack chairs and a fire pit. Site was a couple steps up from the parking spot.

      Fort Collins North-Wellington KOA

      Impressive

Clean, well-kept campground with full outdoor kitchen, pool and play areas. The staff were extremely kind. One of the best KOA’s we have stayed at. As a couple reviewers have mentioned, there may be a livestock smell depending on the wind direction, but we only noticed it once and it was bothersome.

      Estes Park KOA

Noisy next to road and small showers

Nice people, but right against the road. My tent was 50 feet from the main road and I tried to sleep with my head under the pillow. Also, showers are TINY, but bathhouse is air conditioned.

      Last Chance Camp, Cheyenne

      Open and easy camping

The campground was an open field, with other campers spread out and some picnic tables in the mix. They have a porta potty, and outside shower, and an outdoor kitchen area. It’s just right outside of the main town area here in Cheyenne so super convenient!

      North Fork Poudre Campground

A hidden gem near Red Feather

This is a great little campground with only 7 campsites that are first come first served (no reservations). However, it's almost never full and if it is full there are plenty of free camping areas along the road (forest service road). There is no electricity or sewer capabilities for RV's and campers and the sites are relatively small, but a pop up or smaller 5th wheels and RVs will fit. There are pit toilets in the campground, but no running water - so pack your own or bring a filter to pump out of the creek.

The beautiful Kilpecker Creek runs through the camp and most of the campsites are situated right along the creek. All of the campsites have a good tent pad, fire pit and picnic table. The great thing about this campground is it's location and the fact that the sites are fairly spaced out giving you more privacy at each site. There is also a great communal area in the center of the campground of you have a small group up there.

Maka sure to use a bear bag or put all food in the car at night (bear country)

Glacier Basin Campground — Rocky Mountain National Park

Glacier basin campground in Rocky Mountain National Park , July 2019

Beautiful campground with great amenities. Nice flush toilets with running water, sinks, very clean. Water available throughout the campground and solar showers and a dishwashing station. We had spotty cell service which is fine. A short hike takes you to sprague lake or the park and ride shuttle to bear lake area. The shuttle does come into the camp, but due to construction it was easier to walk over to the park and ride. If possible take the drive up through the park to grand lakes via the alpine visitor center!

South Bay Campground — Horsetooth Reservoir

Probably more of a 3.5 than a three but not quite a 4

We had a hard time deciding what to rate this because there truly were so many pros, however the cons were fairly plentiful as well. We had a great time don’t get us wrong but… decide for yourself.

The pros: -Honestly I loved the location in relation to fellow campers. We had nobody to the south of us and our neighbors north of us were blocked by a bush. We were up the hill overlooking to the reservoir above the neighbors west of us. However to the east of us was the main road in and out of the area. So expect road noise over neighbor noise. -Shower house and flushing toilet that were clean and very well maintained. Climate control and comfortable and very well lit. However the shower token system didn’t take our bills so we couldn’t use our showers (I note a camper passing by on our first day telling us about the shower house “it’s a pain in the ass…”) -close to the dumpster and literal feet from the water. -could walk down to the water (even got picked up by some friends on a boat)… or travel north for a social trail along the water with some killer fishing areas.

      • close to town and convenient to get to and the views are stunning. Beautiful view of Horsetooth mountain and our site did feel very private. -electric pedestal with 30 amp and 50 amp worked.
-if you are a birder the birding was 10/10 being surrounded by kingbirds, grackles, orioles, cat birds, cormorants, even some osprey, and can’t forget out the campground goose ❤️

The cons- while not deal breakers for us we couldn’t give this site any more stars because of them -The road noise is a lot. We were lucky to be in an RV however tent camping would be a different story. -again with tent camping although this site felt private you would be amongst only rvs and trailers.

      • the shower house didn’t take our money so we couldn’t get tokens to shower. (If we cared a little more I am sure we could have asked the camp host for some)
      • crowded but of course it is its beautiful there and I don’t blame people for being there (I am people being there) -did I mention the road noise yet?
      • not very shaded- great for solar terrible to staying cool- spent a lot of time at the water which was nice. Suggest bringing a shade tent, awning, or something.

Well that’s my review for site S46 at south bay campground of Horsetooth… attached are some videos of the site as well as a spot I was able to walk to just north of this site.

    Guide to Wellington

Wellington, located at 5,200 feet elevation in northern Colorado, experiences hot summers and cold winters with low humidity. The area sits between the grasslands of the eastern plains and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, creating diverse camping opportunities with both prairie and mountain landscapes within reach.

    What to Do

Fishing activities: At Horsetooth Reservoir South Bay Campground, you can enjoy shoreline fishing or boat access. "This is a great location to bring your boat for wakesurfing, kayak or SUP. I recommend the South Bay. The campground is nice and the natives are chill," notes camper Tom D.

Hiking trails: The Kruger Rock Trail starts directly from Hermits Hollow Campground and rewards hikers with panoramic views. "The Kruger Rock Trailhead is inside the campground, and it is a nice hike with an amazing view of the Rockies and Estes at the top. Bring your crayons - there are two trailmarkers on the trail that you can do rubbings of," says Erin K.

Mountain exploration: Rocky Mountain National Park is accessible from several Wellington-area campgrounds. "The location approximately 4 miles outside of Estes Park is great," notes a visitor to Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park, making it convenient for day trips to the national park.

    What Campers Like

Lake views: Many sites at Carter Lake provide scenic water views. "Depending on what spot you get, you may have wonderful views of the lake," explains Jeremy C. about Eagle Campground at Carter Lake, adding "This particular campground was clean and the camp hosts were great."

Evening entertainment: Some campgrounds offer structured activities. "We love the river, dog park, live music on sat. night and laundry," shares Tyler D. about Riverview RV Park & Campground, where weekend performances make for relaxing evenings.

Spacious sites: The region offers camping spots with room to spread out. "Our site was very wide and open, but we might just have been lucky. Most are tree covered sites and not packed in," explains Aaron about Riverview RV Park, which provides a more comfortable experience than tightly packed sites.

    What You Should Know

Reservation requirements: During peak seasons, campgrounds fill quickly. "This campground experience varies significantly based on your site," notes Christine S. at Eagle Campground. "I imagine the reservations for those [lakeside sites] go quickly, but I will definitely try to get one of those sites next year."

Site variability: The terrain around Wellington creates diverse camping conditions. "Loop A site 14. The campsites in this section had good tree cover for shade," notes Bryan K. about Glacier Basin Campground, while "the beetles have caused many of the trees to be removed; however, despite what the reservation site says, loop C has enough trees to hang a hammock."

Additional fees: Check for day-use fees beyond camping costs. "It was likely our error, but we did not see anywhere in the booking process that there would be additional fees once we arrive at the campground," explains one reviewer about Horsetooth Reservoir South Bay.
