Best Cabin Camping near Villa Grove, CO

Cabins around Villa Grove offer varied accommodation levels within the San Luis Valley and Arkansas River regions. Joyful Journey Hot Springs provides simple cabins with full access to multiple natural hot spring pools. Valley View Hot Springs—Orient Land Trust features cabin options with clothing-optional policies. Basic furnishings typically include beds, tables, chairs, and minimal kitchen facilities. Great Sand Dunes Oasis offers primitive cabins that serve as convenient shelters near the national park. "The cabins are super primitive and you have to be fully equipped for tent camping. They are only $55 a night which is a steal that close to a National Park," notes one visitor about the Great Sand Dunes Oasis accommodations.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Many campgrounds with cabin rentals include Pleasant Valley RV Park, Bighorn Park, and Sand Dunes Recreation. Most cabins provide electric hookups, while heating systems vary from basic space heaters to more robust HVAC systems in premium units. Several locations permit pets in cabins for additional fees, though policies differ substantially between properties. Reservations are essential during summer months when tourism peaks. According to one camper, "National forest cabins are affordable but very rustic with no water and only one outlet. Cabins have outhouses fifty feet away and interesting history."

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities range from non-existent to basic refrigerators and microwaves, with outdoor grills or fire pits often serving as the primary cooking option. Crestone has a small co-op grocery and Buena Vista offers modest shopping options, but guests should arrive prepared. "There aren't a lot of nearby towns that offer larger grocery stores," notes one visitor, "so if you are planning on cooking for yourself, come prepared." Cabins with private bathrooms are limited, with many properties providing communal shower houses and restroom facilities instead.

    Great Sand Dunes Oasis

Excellent Proximity to Great Sand Dunes

There are around 90 primitive tent only campsites here in addition to a couple dozen RV sites, cabins, and a mini lodge.

$25/night for a tent only site, but the location to the park can’t be beat and the fee includes two showers (unlimited time).

Some sites have picnic tables (not in the best shape) and all have fire rings.

The general store is open from 8am-8pm, along with the restaurant. Everything was pretty reasonably priced and the food was good. They also rent boards for surfing the sand dunes.

The view of the sunset and Milky Way were priceless. We would definitely return.

    Mingus Ranch

    Rustic Cabin

National forest cabin that is affordable. Very rustic with no water and only one outlet. Cabin has an outhouse that is fifty feet from cabin. Located in a great area with San Isabel lake and Bishops castle near by. Lots of hiking and off roading near by. Two bedrooms upstairs and day bed down. Interesting history to the cabin, read about it before you go.

    Great Sand Dunes Oasis

    Great Sand Dunes Oasis

Booked a last minute RV spot at Great Sand Dunes Oasis.

    The bad:

The park is not much to look at. The gravel roads and store parking area are in dire need of maintenance; buckle up. There are 20 RV spots all stacked in right on top of each other. The wind was awful and there is nothing to block it. There’s really nothing between the sites but a little strip with a picnic table and small fire ring, and a small tree.

    The good:

The bathrooms and showers were incredibly clean. The person I dealt with on the phone was very accommodating and set us up for after-hours check-in. There was a small playground area near the RV sites. Above the RV sites were cabins and a lodge. They rent Sand sleds to use at the park, $20 each + wax for the day. There is a beautiful view of the dunes from the park.

The restaurant had not opened yet so I have no opinion of that. The store had just opened and was not fully stocked.

RV sites were pull-through but it’s pretty tight on your passenger side pulling in.

All said, I would return to this park again. It is a good place to use as a home base while you explore Great Sand Dunes National Park. Trust me: you will need to shower the sand off.

    Arrowhead Point Resort

    Great campground!

This campground is right off the road and easy to find. They had RV sites in the front of the camp and tent sites up the road. We had showers and laundry, general store and wood for sale. Our site was very nice with lots of room. We had a picnic table and a fire pit in the site. There were a few portable bathrooms that were super clean available for night time runs.

    Great views of the mountains!

    Great Sand Dunes Oasis

Amazing stay with views of the Dunes!

We loved this camp site! It was our first time to tent camp in Colorado and it was great. Several sites to choose from. Some have views of the dunes, some are more secluded. Bathrooms were clean. Very spacious tent site with a fire pit. Our tent sleeps 6 and we had no trouble fitting in the spot.

    Sand Dunes Recreation

    It’s a parking lot

I got to my “campsite” in the overflow tent section… it was literally a giant open dirt lot. No trees, no picnic tables, just sad fire pits and nothing else. I didn’t even end up staying the night here. I drove to Great Sand Dunes Oasis and got a site with actual trees and a table. If I had wanted to sleep in a parking lot, I would’ve parked at a walmart. The bathrooms were pretty nice, although they were realllly far away from the sites. I didn’t check out the pool or restaurant.

    BV Overlook

    Dump Run by Crooks

This campground is an absolute dump run by dishonest crooks. We stayed here in October on a night that it got below freezing and snowed. We were put in a cabin that had a 2-inch gap between the bottom of the door and threshold. The heater was more like a hair dryer and didn’t warm the cabin. It was 40 degrees in the cabin so we didn’t sleep. The floor crunched while walking on it and the platform bed was metal. When we got off the bed there was a loud bang. When we tried to get a refund from the owners she blamed us and said the problem was we didn’t understand rustic cabins. We have stayed in rustic cabins in the cold months for 10 years and never experienced this. There are many places in Buena Vista…take your business elsewhere.

    Great Sand Dunes Oasis

    Pricey for what you get...

This place charges PER Person, including kids, which is extortion! We were charged $36 a night for a camp site that was in terrible shape. We actually drove into town to buy a rake so we could clean up all the trash left around. We were also told because they don't have metal fire rings, fires we're not allowed during a class 1 fire ban. Seems that with the crazy rates they charge, they could upgrade the sites with this feature. We also were appalled with how costly everything was at the store. $3.75 for a 10lb bag of ice. $20 for a board rental and due back by 7 (you can really only be on the dunes in morning and evening so much of the day you can't use the boards). I have definitely stayed in fabulous campgrounds with less amenities for less cost. Unfortunately, they have a captive customer base because Pinon Flats are always full. So in conclusion, if they continue to charge such high prices for their sites, clean them up, upgrade the fire pits and then maybe the cost would be worth it.

    Great Sand Dunes Oasis

    Excellent Location

This campground is so conveniently close to the national park. The property was well-maintained and clean. The staff were very friendly. And, there was a restaurant, gift shop and equipment rental shop on the property.

Our RV spot had full hookups but the sites were so closely spaced that there was no room for a picnic table or outdoor seating. The bathrooms were modern, clean, and with hot showers.

Guide to Villa Grove

Cabin accommodations near Villa Grove, Colorado sit at elevations between 7,500-9,000 feet in the San Luis Valley, bringing cooler nighttime temperatures even in summer months. Many rental cabins provide direct access to the Arkansas River and mountain views of the Sangre de Cristo range. Winter cabin stays require preparation for potentially harsh conditions with temperatures dropping well below freezing.

What to do

River fishing opportunities: Several cabin properties provide direct river access for fishing. At Pleasant Valley RV Park, guests appreciate the convenient fishing steps from their sites. "We can see snow. They have a nice camp store, WiFi that works, golf cart rental, a playground, kids games, a community area (even host occasional concerts) fishing, and a river running through," notes one visitor.

Hot springs soaking: The region offers multiple natural hot springs with varied soaking experiences. Joyful Journey Hot Springs provides multiple soaking pools at different temperatures. "A river with cliffs on one side and mountain views on the other side. It is right on Hwy 50 which means easy access, but also lots of road noise," reports a camper at Bighorn Park.

Sand Dunes exploration: Cabins provide convenient basecamp access to Great Sand Dunes National Park. "Super close to the dunes - you get a great view of them from the campground. There's also a small playground for kids," notes a visitor at Great Sand Dunes Oasis.

What campers like

Mineral spring benefits: Natural lithium-containing waters provide therapeutic soaking. "Joyful Journey is a lovely little hot springs in the middle of the San Luis Valley. The Sangre de Christo Mountains tower in the distance and on a moonlit night, they positively glow from the farthest pool. The water in these springs have trace amounts of lithium which makes them even more relaxing than others I've tried," explains one visitor.

Mountain views: Cabin settings offer panoramic mountain vistas. "High altitude means cool to cold nights. Gorgeous area and park!" notes a camper at Monarch Spur RV Park & Campground. Their cabins sit at over 8,000 feet elevation, providing exceptional stargazing opportunities.

Riverside locations: Multiple cabin properties feature riverside settings with soothing water sounds. "Our campsite (#8) was right next to and parallel to the river which provided some soothing sounds at night," reports a visitor at Riverside RV Park in Salida, describing their cabin experience.

What you should know

Limited cell service: Many cabin areas have minimal connectivity. "Two bars version service," notes a camper at Great Sand Dunes Oasis, highlighting the spotty cell coverage common throughout the region.

Weather preparation: High altitude locations require packing for temperature swings. "It's at over 8000 feet and the views are amazing. We can see snow," mentions a camper at Monarch Spur RV Park.

Grocery planning: Bring food supplies as shopping options remain limited. "There aren't a lot of nearby towns that offer larger grocery stores, Crestone has a small co-op grocery as does Buena Vista, so if you are planning on cooking for yourself, come prepared," advises a visitor to Joyful Journey Hot Springs.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Several properties offer special amenities for children. "The kids didn't want to go anywhere they were happy just to hang out here at the campground," notes a visitor at Monarch Spur RV Park about their facilities which include "a playground, kids games, a community area."

Budget-conscious options: Primitive cabins offer affordable alternatives to hotels. "The RV spots are on one side of the large parking lot, with the hook up spaces in the middle, with non-electric spots running around two of the outside sides," explains a Joyful Journey visitor about their layout options at various price points.

Educational opportunities: Regional cabins provide learning experiences about local ecology. "Property features several natural hot springs and you can hike to a cave," notes a visitor at Valley View Hot Springs—Orient Land Trust, describing their unique educational hiking options.

Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Electrical service differs between properties. "Sites come with access to the pools. There is also an adobe bathroom/shower house with full access. And a restaurant cafe in the main lodge," explains a visitor at Joyful Journey Hot Springs about their amenities.

Level site challenges: Some cabin and RV areas require leveling equipment. "The gravel site was level side to side but sloped slightly back to front," notes a visitor at Riverside RV Park about their site conditions.

Bathroom accessibility: Facility locations vary significantly between properties. "The bathrooms and showers are clean but a bit worn, and they are across the river bridge from the campsites and up some fairly steep steps," cautions a visitor at Riverside RV Park.
