Reaching East Portal Campground requires descending five miles of switchbacks at a 16% grade, and vehicles over 22 feet are prohibited. Low gear is not optional. The road alone filters out most RV traffic, leaving 15 sites split between two areas: a more exposed set of drive-in sites near the top of the lower canyon floor, and a second cluster where campers park and carry gear down a short embankment to shaded spots beneath trees and shrubs. Both areas have vault toilets, bear boxes, fire rings, and picnic tables. Water is listed as available, though some visitors have arrived to find no working spigot, so carrying your own supply is a reasonable precaution.
The campground sits at the bottom of Black Canyon of the Gunnison, dropping from elevations above 9,000 feet to just under 7,000. The Gunnison River runs nearby and holds gold medal trout water just below a dam, giving anglers roughly a mile of fishable shoreline from camp. Wildlife sightings are common. Multiple reviewers report deer, bald eagles, and bears coming down to the river to drink.
Sites are close together and none sit directly on the river bank, but the canyon walls and tree cover keep temperatures noticeably cooler than the rim. The campground closes seasonally when road conditions deteriorate, so confirming access before a trip is worth the extra step. Firewood is not sold on-site; the small store near Highway 50 at the park turnoff is the last reliable resupply point. Campers wanting more options in the broader area can browse campgrounds around Montrose, or consider the nearby South Rim Campground for a rim-level alternative.
