Swimming, tubing, and kayaking on the Smith River draw many visitors to Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park Campground, where sites sit beneath old-growth redwood canopy just outside Hiouchi in Del Norte County. The river runs bright blue through the park, with a trail hugging its banks and multiple access points along the way. Even in summer, the dense canopy keeps temperatures noticeably cool, and sites near the lower loop sit close enough to the water that campers in spots like 54 can hear the current through the night.
The campground divides into two main areas worth understanding before you book. The upper sites are set within thick redwood groves and offer more shade and understory privacy, while the lower loop, roughly sites 47 through 60, sits on the river flat among the largest trees in the park. As Ian Y. notes, those lower sites get "prime placement among the biggest trees, but they're much more open." Campsites are not large, though most can accommodate a 10-by-14-foot tent without difficulty, and food storage lockers are available at each site.
Trails launch directly from camp. The summer footbridge gives walkers access to Stout Memorial Grove on foot, and the Mill Creek trail connects to the Grove of Titans for a longer outing. A short nature loop through the day-use area provides easy access to some of the largest redwoods in the region. The Outer Loop (Sites 45-60, 76-91) - Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and the Redwoods Cabin Area - Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park are also within the park for campers who want a cabin or a different site configuration.
Reservations here are competitive. Booking six months out is the standard advice, and summer weekends fill fast. Off-season visits in late fall or early spring tend to be quieter, though fire restrictions may apply depending on conditions. The bathroom facilities draw mixed feedback, with showers available near the visitor center for 25 cents per minute. Crescent City, about ten minutes west, covers resupply needs including groceries and gas. Campers with a National Parks Senior Pass can apply for a 50% discount, as the park is co-managed by the National Park Service.
The campground also carries a practical note for satellite internet users: riverside sites can provide enough open sky to run a Starlink dish near the bank. Those who prefer to plan around campgrounds near Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park will find several alternatives in the surrounding area. For most campers, though, the combination of river access, old-growth trees, and well-maintained facilities makes this one worth the advance planning it requires.
