Several RV campgrounds near Sugarloaf accommodate various motorhome sizes with full hookup options. Mountain Gate RV Park in Redding provides big-rig friendly sites with 50-amp electric, water, and sewer connections. Redding RV Park features pull-through sites with full hookups and accommodates both small and large RVs on mostly level gravel pads. Boulder Creek RV Redding remains open year-round with concrete pads wide enough for comfortable setup and additional vehicle parking. Shasta Lake RV Resort operates seasonally from May to December with 30-amp hookups and somewhat limited space for larger rigs. "Most campsites have parking for one vehicle. Some will accept two vehicles like a truck and trailer. But, there are no sites for large RVs, or large trucks and 5th wheels and/or large pull behind RVs. Max length is 27' and only a couple of spaces that handle those."

Access to many RV parks requires careful navigation through mountain roads with occasional steep grades. Cell service varies significantly throughout the region, with strong Verizon coverage at some parks while others become complete dead zones. Most RV parks provide sanitary dump stations, though availability of other amenities differs between locations. Based on reviews from The Dyrt, travelers should be prepared for potential unlevel sites at some locations, with one visitor noting "Our site dipped down from the access road, bottomed out slightly, then rises again back toward the access road. It took us nearly an hour to locate an area within the space that would allow us to attain a reasonable level." Pet policies generally permit dogs with standard leash requirements, and several parks include designated dog areas. During summer months, advance reservations are strongly recommended as RV campsites near Sugarloaf frequently reach capacity, especially on holiday weekends — booking ahead is the most reliable way to secure a spot at the better-reviewed RV campgrounds in the area.

      Trailer Lane Campground

      Great place to stay!

Wonderful place to stay! Very nice little campground in Weed, CA. We originally were just stopping for the night so I had reserved a 50 amp pull thru, but we had some problems with our fifth wheel and my husband wanted some shade to work on it. Karen was nice enough to juggle reservations and get us in a 30 amp back in that had shade. Plus, we ended up staying for two nights. Karen was very accommodating and helpful and we really appreciated it! The campground is fun, has some outdoor games, a small dog park, and a community fire pit. And visiting the goats and chickens was definitely a bonus! I highly recommend Trailer Lane Campground and would definitely stay there again! We didn't use the bathrooms or laundry.

Del Loma RV Park and Campground

      Beautiful Trinity River

En route Phone GPS was not reliable, luckily they have a big sign. Check in was ok, family run business and the office was a mess. Small store carries some essentials. You have to drive through several long term older Travel trailers that look like they have been there for years. I camped at site 28, which was actually a group site. It was great to have a large unoccupied area to one side, but the other side had an unoccupied long term TT that stunk like rotten fish. It was so bad we never put out our patio rug, or cooked outside. Across the way was a clean small pool which was very nice. We enjoyed riding our bikes around the loop, and walking down to the Trinity River. There are 2 river spots from the campground. Both are scenic, only one is safe to enter the water and that spot had a very small river rock spot to set up a couple chairs. If you are tent camping or in a smaller RV, their are some better sites that are further away from the permanent old Travel Trailers closet to the entrance. If you are there over a weekend they do have a very large outdoor laser tag area. They technically do have a free Wi Fi, however it is very weak, almost nonexistent. Verizon had no cell coverage.

      Sacramento River RV Park

      Friendly Campground

This has been one of the loveliest RV parks we’ve stayed at. We stayed here for almost 3 months, as many others do. Most of the residents are contract workers staying short- to long-term, but the park is also friendly for weekend and overnight stays with select spots available.

I give this place 5 stars because of the respectfulness of both the residents and the staff, along with how well maintained everything is. It’s more campground-sized, but the amenities are kept up very well. The bathrooms were cleaned regularly, the laundry room was nice, and they also have private shower rooms.

The pool was not operating while we were here, but they were actively working on getting it ready for the summer. Since we have a child, we appreciated the playground area and how family-friendly the park felt. The other kids staying here could safely play together and enjoy the space.

There’s also a central activities room with a small gym area, kitchen, and common hangout space, which was nice to have. The fenced dog park was another huge plus and gave our dog room to run around.

The setting by the river is beautiful, there’s good shade throughout the park, and the lots are laid out nicely for pulling in and parking. You can tell by the type of crowd here that it’s a very safe and respectful place with very little trouble.

The location is also convenient — just one exit off Interstate 5 near Costco.

We previously stayed at another RV park in central Redding near the river that cost nearly the same monthly rate, but we genuinely enjoyed spending time at this park, even during the day.

One significant downside is the noise. Interstate 5 to the east is loud, and the wood mill to the west creates constant background noise as well. The silver lining is that you rarely hear your neighbors because of it.

Lastly, if you’re looking for a longer-term stay, we found the application process here much easier than at most other parks. For healthcare contract workers especially, they seem to expedite the process and limit some of the background check and credit score requirements that many parks require.

      Trailer Lane Campground

Mostly dirt parking lot. Owner operator was downright rude.

We prepaid and we’re assigned a site. We showed up before the 2PM check in time and couldn’t raise anyone so pulled into our vacant site which was supposed to be pull through but sites are back to back so difficult to do in addition our site had a tree 12-14’ from electric and utilities. Had to jockey a number of time to position our slide outs each side of the tree and other side slide out behind electrical. Not easy to position.  Little later guy shows up and tells us we have to move. What?  Said we were in the required fire Lane.  I questioned it and he snapped that we had checked in early, I replied we tried the bell at the store and no one responded. Again we were chastised for being early.  He stated fire Lane was in back of our fifth wheel.  I paced it off and we were sixteen feet to the trailer behind.  He responded you have to move.  That would force us to pull forward almost out of our space.  Based on his rudeness we said we would just leave.  We were still charged even after requesting a refund.

Manzanita Lake Campground — Lassen Volcanic National Park

Manzanita Lake Campground - Tidy but Tight Spaces

Manzanita Lake Campground is the campground closest to the north entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park. It is best accessed from California State Route 44/89. My wife and I reserved space A8 for a four-night stay beginning August 7, 2023.

While the campground is well-maintained, I cannot, under any circumstances, recommend that space for anyone camping with an RV or travel trailer. From all appearances A8 looked perfect. But appearances can be deceiving. Looking at an online map of the campground A8 appeared to be a pull-through site which it is. The problem is the site dips down from the access road, bottoms out slightly, then rises again back toward the access road. It took us nearly an hour to locate an area within the space that would allow us to attain a reasonable level so that our refrigerator would operate on propane. And our travel trailer is only 18-feet in length. Once the trailer was reasonably level, the entry step was approximately 18 inches from ground to the step (see images).

Despite the initial difficulties, once settled, we found the campground to be quiet even though there is not a lot of space between sites. The camp store offers some grocery items but is mainly dedicated to the sale of tourist merchandise. It does have a gas pump offering only 87 octane regular gas at $4.99 per gallon - cash only which is below market price for the area.

We would camp at Manzanita Lake Campground in the future but would be highly selective in our choice of sites - driving through the various loops we noted that very few are close to level.

McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park Campground

Quiet campground next to busy day site

Where camped here just after they opened in April, 2021.  The daytime visitors made for a large crowded parking lot and line at the entrance station, but so far on 8 campers in the 64 sites that were open.

It is a wonderfully shaded park (i.e. no solar) and the sites are nicely separated.  However it is an older park and our 18 foot trailer was too large for many of the sites.  There were no pull throughs and any trailer over 25 feet is going to have a problem.  Otherwise, for the most part the pads were paved and flat.

They had solid picnic tables, aging stone fireplaces, but nice, newer heavy metal fire rings.  Wood was available for purchase.  There is no electric on site and the water faucets (not threaded) were scattered around the site.  No dish water dump or cleaning station, but there was an RV dump station.  They flush toilets with hot and cold water sinks as well as the showers (2 tokens for $1 = 4min) are excellent.

This is a cell dead zone.  Absolutely no Verizon service until you drove back to Burney.

We really enjoyed the different hikes that were available, being around 2 miles more or less in length.  The falls are the usual tourist zoo, but very beautiful.  Once you get out on the trails, you don't see many people.

Oak Bottom Tent Campground — Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area

      Ok, but a little disappointing.

After several nights of free dispersed camping, we decided to spoil ourselves with a paid lakeside campsite for the showers, amenities, and fire pits. Our stay cost about $50, plus an additional $10 fee for our dog.

The biggest downside is that the RV area is essentially just a parking lot. It’s completely exposed, with little to no shade, and can be windy and quite hot when the sun is out. The beach itself is nice, and there’s a boat launch if that’s what you’re coming for.

We were disappointed to learn that the showers are not included and require an additional fee. We didn’t check the exact cost, but it wasn’t worth it to us, and we ended up rinsing off in the lake instead. The fire pits and covered pavilions are available in the day-use area and are only a short walk from the parking lot, but they are not located directly at the RV sites. Also worth noting: dogs are not allowed on the beach.

Amenities include an RV dump station, potable water fill, restrooms, and showers. Access is easy, with paved roads and large, accessible parking areas.

One other thing to be aware of is that you still need a National Park pass in addition to paying for the campsite.

Overall, I’d recommend this more as a day-use destination or for travelers in larger RVs who want convenient amenities. If you’re overlanding or traveling in a truck camper, there are better and more scenic options available nearby.

    Guide to Sugarloaf

RV campgrounds near Sugarloaf, California provide camping options with varying levels of amenities and accessibility. The area sits at the southern edge of the Cascade Range with elevations ranging from 500 to 3,500 feet, creating notable temperature variations between valley and mountain locations. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F in lower elevations while mountain locations remain 10-15 degrees cooler.

    What to do

Fishing access: 1.5 miles from Old Lewiston Bridge RV Resort: The Trinity River offers excellent fishing opportunities within walking distance. "Just around the corner from the campground (walking distance) is access to the river. The whole family enjoyed dipping in when it's warm outside," notes Jason D.

Lake activities: Multiple lakes within 25 minutes: The region provides several water recreation options. "We fished Lewiston lake less than 10 min. away and Whiskeytown Lake about 20-25 min. away with great luck," shares Corey L. about staying at Old Lewiston Bridge RV Resort.

Archery practice: Available at some campgrounds: Some parks offer specialized recreation areas. At Old Lewiston Bridge RV Resort, "There are targets set up for bow hunters in the pines below the park," according to Tara D.

    What campers like

Shade coverage: Important during hot summers: Trees provide relief from intense heat. At Antlers RV Park and Campground, "The spaces are all in the woods with mostly shade, though there are some that get more sunlight than others," explains Adam.

Clean facilities: Varies by location: Cleanliness is frequently mentioned in reviews. "We loved our stay. We felt safe and it's probably one of the most cleanest campground and facilities I've ever been to. Clean bathrooms, showers, zero trash around," reports Jill P. about Mountain Gate RV Park.

Pool access: Available at select parks: Some parks offer swimming facilities during summer months. Antlers RV Park has "a little store/burger spot which is very convenient next to the pool area," according to Lisa M.

    What you should know

Bears are present: Take precautions with food storage: Wildlife encounters require preparation. At Antlers RV Park, one camper noted, "The bears got into the trash pretty regularly though. It was very evident in the morning when the cans would be knocked over and rummaged through."

Noise levels vary: Highway proximity affects some locations: Some parks experience traffic noise. At Trail In RV Park & Campground, Elizabeth O. found it "actually next to the I-5, no traffic noise because of the thick buffer of trees."

Cell service details: Coverage depends on specific location. At Boulder Creek RV Redding, one camper noted "Excellent Verizon signal. Very clean. The only negative was it appeared to be many long term residents."

Ant infestations: Reported at some parks: Pest issues affect some locations. At Marina RV Park, one reviewer warned, "After over a year and a half on the road full time, this one night stop has led to serious ant issues in our rig."

    Tips for camping with families

Pool availability: Seasonal and subject to closure: When planning water activities, check current status. One reviewer at Boulder Creek RV Redding noted, "Mid-July, 114 degrees and their pool is closed!!! At $90+ per night expect better."

Kid-friendly amenities: Available at select parks: Some campgrounds offer specific features for children. Leeann L. shared about Boulder Creek: "The grounds were beautiful, and included a small waterfall & koi pond, and a play structure for the littles."

Summer heat preparedness: Pack accordingly: High temperatures require planning. A visitor to Shasta Lake RV Resort warned, "The camp sites have limited shade so if you like baking in heat then disregard this review."

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Bring leveling blocks: Uneven sites require preparation. "Getting into the spot was tricky enough. Park isn't particularly well maintained nor is the price a bargain," notes a Marina RV Park visitor.

Size limitations: Check before booking: Some parks have strict length restrictions. At Shasta Lake RV Resort, reviewers mention limited space for larger rigs with 30-amp hookups rather than 50-amp.

Hookup reliability: Verify before arrival: Electrical issues can occur in extreme heat. One camper at Marina RV Park reported, "Our 30amp had issues, which meant the airconditioning unit could not run continuously in 100 degree heat."

Self check-in procedures: Prepare for after-hours arrival: Some parks offer flexible check-in options. A Mountain Gate RV Park visitor noted, "One night stay and arrived late so did self check in...no password for bathrooms were given, so asked a neighbor for a password."
