Great views, well-kept facilities, a little pricey

We stayed at C3 in McClure Point for 3 nights at $40/night. The website was very helpful in choosing a site that had the view we wanted, and to help plan where we'd place the trailer. One interesting thing about the camp is that most of the spots you'd want to place your trailer in are on the "other" side of the electric/water connections (for us, a gazebo was on the "right" side). This was fine, but make sure your hoses/cords are long enough to get around to the other side of your rig.

Most the sites (at least in the C loop) have good shade and views. We were able to park right under a tree to help keep the inside cool. One thing we found was that some of the branches would drag across the roof during the day due to wind, making a slight sound.

The site we were at (and most of them) have a gazebo with a picnic table and a grill, which is great. Some appear to have a fire pit, but burning wood was off-limits at this time of the year.

Most of the activities were at the other site, Lake MacSwain, which is 8 miles down the road near the entrance (yes, it's an 8-mile drive from the gate to McClure Point). There is one dump station and it's there at MacSwain. A bonus here is that there are 2 actual dumping points at the dump station, side-by-side.

There is a small general store at MacSwain where you can buy food and camping items. When we were here, there was a model plane "convention" flying off the lake, which was pretty fun to watch. You can rent small watercraft and paddle/pedal around the lake.

As far as animal friends go, we did see a couple tarantulas (one across the road and one on the way down from the entrance). They're harmless and kinda fun to watch. We also saw a couple deer and select of birds: turkey vultures, bluebirds, acorn woodpeckers, finches, Canadian geese and various ducks.

Nice Midweek Getaway

Easy check in and no extra fee for our 3 Aussies! We stayed at site c-1 for 2 nights and found it to be both clean and level.

RV sites have water and 30 amp hookups. Hookups are seemingly on the wrong side of your vehicle in many sites. If you want easy access to the picnic table, you’ll need to run your hose and power cord under your vehicle. We chose to pull in straight as we weren’t planning to use the picnic table anyway so it was not an issue for us.

While there are no sewer hookups, the is s convenient dump station at Lake McSwain on your way out.

Despite the low water levels in the lake, the views are still great. Loved the constant parade of turkeys. The campground was extremely quiet, but keep in mind that we were there midweek in March. Not sure we’d have the same experience during peak summer season. We’ll definitely keep this on our list of off-season campgrounds.

Turkeys are everywhere 😊

Great campground! Overrun with wild turkeys which beats the human variety. March weekend trip with tons of spaces to choose from. My understanding is come May it gets pretty busy. Hot showers, Electric, water and great views. McSwain (near the ranger station entrance) has dump station, some sites w sewer, part keeping model cabins, store, cafe and boat rentals. This was my maiden camping trip for my 32’ Forest River but I will definitely return for longer stays. Note: I reserved F8 for my space but changed to the C loop. The water view was great but the space sloped too much for my levelers to function properly. Also need to watch for spaces with room for my slider away from trees. On the upside, you can park at any angle within your space - parallel, pull or back in. (The turkeys are a hoot!)

Another great last minute trip

I'm fortunate to be able camp at Lake McClure often because it is not too far from where i live. The campsites were very clean, bathrooms were very clean and well maintained and the cost to camp here at $25 per night is reasonable. We have brought our watercraft here and the people boating around us have always been courteous and responsible. The only drawback on this particular trip was the dog left tied up and unattended, at one of the campsites closer to us, would bark at every person who walked, drove, or rode by their campsite. And it might not have been a big deal if they werent so close to the bathroom, but after the first few hours of barking, i almost wanted to ask for a different site. Other than that, we had a great time. The rangers were very knowledgeable and outgoing. Special thanks to Mr. Null, the ranger we met the following day, who was very hospitable while we were checking out horseshoe bend and bagby.
