Manteca camping areas sit at elevations around 40 feet above sea level in California's San Joaquin Valley. The region experiences hot, dry summers with temperatures frequently exceeding 90°F from June through September. Campgrounds here provide access to both the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta system and nearby Sierra Nevada foothills.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: At Riverpoint Landing Marina Resort, you can fish directly from your campsite on the Stockton Deep Water Channel. "Clean facilities, level gravel pads for the rv. Can fish the delta directly from the campsite," notes Miranda C. The marina provides direct water access for both bank and boat fishing.
Water sports access: The Delta waterways offer boating, kayaking and swimming opportunities at Turner Cut Resort. "Nice helpful staff, clean bathrooms, well kept campground and beautiful views of river and mt Diablo. Bar and boat ramp, taco Tuesday, a place to check out for sure!" reports Mose A. The resort features a boat launch ramp with proximity to prime Delta fishing spots.
Hiking trails: Del Valle Campground provides extensive hiking networks through the hills around Livermore, approximately 30 miles west of Manteca. "Del Valle is one of the most beautiful lakes in the east bay. The water is perfect temperature. Great hikes, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming and beginner windsurfing," explains Rosina A. Trails range from easy lakeside paths to challenging hill climbs with significant elevation gain.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Thousand Trails Turtle Beach offers generous camping areas along the waterfront. David B. shares, "Stayed on large grass site next to the water. Very nice. Few amenities and staff was scarce but more than adequate. Lots of room to roam for people & pets." The campground accommodates various RV sizes on level sites.
Ship watching: Riverpoint Landing Marina Resort provides unique opportunities to observe large ships. John L. comments, "Our site was right along the Deep Water Channel. We saw ships coming in and out of the channel. Was lucky to see a sailboat race also." The deep water channel allows close viewing of commercial vessel traffic.
Pet amenities: French Camp RV Park and Golf Course provides dedicated spaces for dogs. Kim W. notes, "Quiet, clean and great dog parks! It is very well-maintained, nicely landscaped, and they have some great dog parks." The park features multiple enclosed dog exercise areas where pets can run off-leash.
What you should know
Seasonal heat considerations: Summer temperatures frequently reach triple digits, requiring preparation for heat safety. At Woodward Reservoir, Jamie H. advises bringing "extra blankets and fire wood. It tends to get chilly and windy occasionally. Make sure to bring sunblock!" Temperature swings between day and night can be significant.
Site variability: Dos Reis County Park offers basic amenities but site layouts vary considerably. Patrick M. explains, "A small loop of 20+ sites, all (it appeared) with full-hookups. We had a back-in site with no trouble for a 17' trailer. Small oddities (a site or two with what looked like permanent residents, showers with limited hours in the morning and evening, unclear signage on how and where to register)."
Weekend crowds: Dog friendly campgrounds near Manteca become significantly busier Friday through Sunday. Kenji F. reports from Dos Reis County Park: "A couple of campers didn't respect the quiet time rules and it ruined my whole experience at the site." Weekday visits typically offer quieter conditions.
Tips for camping with families
Water recreation options: Woodward Reservoir provides family-friendly water activities. Bonnie S. explains, "Woodward is our family go to place to camp in the summer heat. Lots of campsites with room for tents or RVs. Fire pits and picnic tables at each site. Plenty of bathrooms, some with showers. Water feels good when it's 100+ degrees outside."
Child-focused amenities: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park offers extensive activities for younger campers. Katie B. details, "We go with several families with kids 5-13 and they all have a blast. Nice playground, basketball court, volleyball, bouncy pillow, outdoor movies, pool, lazy river, water park, bumper boats, laser tag, boat rentals on the delta, restaurants and quick bites."
Safety considerations: Pet-friendly camping areas require vigilance with children and animals together. At Turner Cut Resort, Mariela H. notes the environment is "Very comfortable. It was a relaxing stay." Designated swimming areas provide safer alternatives to open Delta water for families with children and pets.
Tips from RVers
Overnight options: French Camp RV Park serves well for brief stays. Lawrence P. shares, "Nice place to stay. Was passing thru from south California. Very clean. Staff was pleasant to work with at check in. Plenty of room to leave RV hooked up to truck." The park provides easy access from Highway 5 with pull-through sites.
Site selection strategies: When using Windmill Cove RV Park, arrive early for better site placement. Tabatha M. warns, "Although we did have a water view space, the actual spot was very tight and small. There aren't any actual lines delineating the camping spots - cones are used. We arrived later in the afternoon to find that our cones were moved which made our spot even smaller."
Utility limitations: Check available hookups before booking at pet-friendly campgrounds. At Thousand Trails Turtle Beach, Roxanna L. cautions, "This application says it's 50 amp with septic. No septic and only 30 amp service. Clean place- just seems to be portapots."
