    Mattole Campground

    Amazing camping, rough roads

In my opinion some of the best camping I’ve done on the California coast. So worth paying the $15 a night fee to camp. Very scenic area with lots to see and do, also very “remote” feeling area. Getting there was so slow and tedious for me. The road from Ferndale (Mattole road) is paved but very rough in some places. Took me three hours to go 30 miles due to my rig being old and having to be very cautious in it. Also be prepared for very steep grades, almost smoked out my brakes cause I wasn’t in a low enough gear.

    Mattole Campground

The Lost Coast Is Pure Paradise!

This was my first time to the Lost Coast. The drive from Ferndale to Mattole Campground was like entering another dimension. I drove in on a mild, sunny day in late July and as I began to make my way into the King Range I was spellbound with the magnitude of the beauty. I hardly took note of how rough the road was because of how gorgeous the surroundings were; mountains, valleys, ocean views, and wild flowers all added up to pure magic. The Mattole Campground is remote, oceanside, and the perfect spot to getaway. Most of the sites don't have much privacy, but there are a few that do. The vault toilet restrooms were clean enough to tolerate. The sites include a fire ring and picnic table. It was a little busier than I expected, though it was peak season. I hope to return during a slightly quieter time.

    Emerald Forest Cabins & RV

    Redwood Pleasantries

This is a very lovely campground clean of trash with quaint with cabins and campsites tucked between redwoods and Douglas fir trees. Campground looks lush and loved.

They offer cabins, RV and tent sites.

Additionally there is a Video Arcade, Horseshoe pit, dog park, celebration hall with board games/puzzles, a mini mart, playground, gazebo, and multiple bath/shower houses and laundry facilities.

They periodically have special events during the weekends. We lucked out with live music and wine tastings.

Incredibly close to town but still immersed in the woods.

Only negative is that it’s close to 101 and car traffic can be heard at times. However, there are many song birds around camp to make your stay pleasant.

    Highly recommend!

Giant Redwoods RV & Cabin Destination

    Quiet Redwoods Getaway

This is a beautiful campground in Meyer’s Flat, CA. The area of Myers Flat is a little “sketchy” but the campground is very well kept and they close the gates at night which is nice. There are nice little cabins on site as well as RV sites. We stayed for 3 nights and it was very enjoyable. Driving and biking along Avenue of the Giants was the highlight of this area! There is a little dog park, volleyball court, playground, swimming area. (we didn’t swim due to the algae warning for northern CA) It’s along Eel River. There’s also a great market and coffee shop nearby that we took advantage of! (pricey but the only place around) The staff is so kind and Vicki was a great help while we made our reservation over the phone. Overall, we would stay again!

    Humboldt County Fairgrounds

Nothing fancy, but convenient to Ferndale, and quiet

I stayed here twice for a total of eight days. Many long-term Residents give the place a seedy feeling. Ultimately it is safe and secure. And well managed. The bathroom is clean, heated, free showers and the combination is changed weekly. Large grassy area with good spacing between most RVs. I was in the middle of the campground for short term parking. Because of recent rains and some soggy areas I had to overnight campers close to me. 30 amp and 50 amp power and water at each side. The largest downside to this place is the RV dump station inside the fairgrounds. It’s the worst one that I’ve ever used. It needs to be completely rebuilt. No ultimately it did work. Great location to the picturesque town of Ferndale California. Also a convenient location for exploring the Lost Coast area. 12 miles away from Eureka California which has a Costco and Patriot gas station on the south end of town has a car wash that can accommodate RVs.

    Benbow KOA & Golf Course

    Okay

It’s a ok place to stay. There are a lot of cats on property which got our dog riled up. Good location to see area attractions. Hookups we’re good. Seems like a lot of extended guests in cabins. If we stay again we’ll get a pull through site rather than back in. It didn’t help that we had a family with 2 ATVs staying in a cabin right by us and they’re kids (guessing ages 10-14) would drive around the camp for hours at a time. First time I’ve seen that at a koa.

Full hook ups and walk into town!

Super quiet on a Monday only 3 other RV’s there. Walked around Ferndale and had great Mexican food. The coffee shop in town was super cool and cozy.

Van Duzen County Park - Pamplin Grove

    Best place to camp!

Incredible views, quiet, easy river access, pet and kid friendly, showers, on site friendly hosts, and the best trails through old growth that you rarely get in a campground. It’s a magical place, and affordable. Worth sacrificing the cell signal, there’s a pay phone in the entry lot. I’ve been twice now, and can’t wait to go back.

Guide to Ferndale

The Ferndale area sits at the gateway to California's Lost Coast, with elevations ranging from sea level to 400 feet across its camping areas. Most campgrounds near Ferndale experience moderate temperatures between 50-65°F year-round, with frequent coastal fog rolling in during summer mornings. The area's unique position between mountains and coast creates microclimate variations between inland and coastal camping sites.

What to do

River swimming access: At Van Duzen County Park, visitors can enjoy river recreation just 20 miles from Ferndale. As one camper notes, "The river is clean, and relaxing. Swimming here is so fun! Cold, but refreshing!" The park features swimming holes that local campers refer to as "Swimmers Delight."

Victorian town exploration: Campers staying at Humboldt County Fairgrounds often combine their stay with exploring Ferndale itself. What you should know

Water quality variations: Some campgrounds in the region have water quality issues. At Stafford RV Park, a camper observed, "The water jug we had filled with their water was full of rusty red residue at the bottom, ick. And that's with using a filter."

Seasonal accessibility: Access to certain campgrounds may be limited by weather conditions. Burlington Campground warns that "The entire campground is ALWAYS in the shade because of the tree density," which affects temperature and solar charging capabilities.

Fairground events: When staying at fairground camping, be aware of potential events. During special events, one camper noted, "I sought last-minute camping reservations nearby and found a tranquil spot with ample space," but conditions may change during busy fair periods.

Campsite selection timing: For best choice of campsites, timing matters. As one camper at Burlington Campground reported, "We arrived in early March, mid-afternoon, and still had a few choices on a first-come, first-served basis."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Van Duzen County Park offers excellent options for families with children. A camper shared, "Incredible views, quiet, easy river access, pet and kid friendly, showers, on site friendly hosts, and the best trails through old growth that you rarely get in a campground."

Weather preparation: Coastal campsites can experience significant temperature drops. A Burlington Campground visitor advised, "Towering trees cast shadows at all times of day—dress warm!" This applies especially to children who may be more sensitive to temperature changes.

Space between sites: For families with pets, look for campgrounds offering adequate spacing. At Wuss Camp, "The sites are widely dispersed and circle around a beautiful meadow," providing room for children and dogs to play without disturbing neighbors.

Tips from RVers

Access routes: Larger RVs should be cautious about approach roads. One Humboldt County Fairgrounds camper advised, "Access from Fernbridge of of 101 as the other roads are very twisty for all but the smallest RVs."

Solar limitations: For those relying on solar power, be aware of shade conditions. As one Burlington Campground visitor warned, "Tons of shade so don't expect your solar panels to keep your battery charged."
