When you think Napa Valley, you think of wine, not camping. But you can plan a wine vacation from behind the flap of your tent. Set up in one of the valley’s campgrounds then visit the many casual tasting rooms that won't mind dirt under your fingernails.  When you tire of drinking wine, hike Mt. St Helena, a dormant volcano. Or walk through the Petrified Forest, a forest that was turned to stone by the last eruption of the volcano. Or visit California’s Old Faithful, a nearby geyser.


Once you have found camping in California’s Half Dome in Yosemite Valley, center yourself in Tuolumne Meadows, a more remote section of the park with its own collection of charming granite domes. Here's a secret: Instead of joining the crowds of day hikers on the meadow's most popular trails, follow the backpackers north on the famed John Muir Trail. The trail meanders through meadows, along a river below alpine peaks. And best of all, the first 8 miles of this trail out of Tuolumne are flat. Hike until you find a spot to watch the marmots, then return to your campsite. For more, backpack another 23 miles to Reds Meadow where you can catch a shuttle back up to Tuolumne.

Joshua trees 50 miles closer to LA than the Joshua Tree National Park!

This is 2.5 acres of protected Joshua Tree lands in the Antelope Valley north of LA, between the snowy Tehachapi Mountains, and the rolling green foothills of the also-snowy San Gabriel Mountains. My first time out there I saw BOTH ENDS of a rainbow in front of the snowy Tehachapis!! Super dark skies, and a million stars at night. It feels like the wild west out here. Think long dirt roads, tumbleweeds, bones, and maybe some old bullet shells (there's no shooting allowed on the property anymore).

The property itself is along a dirt "road" called Avenue C, but I'd be shocked if you encountered anyone driving along there. Except possibly another group of campers. This land used to be the domain of the Ketanemuk tribe, which I think means People From The East. In the summer they would go up and hunt and get pine nuts in the Tehachapi Mountains, and acorns from the oak trees in the San Gabriels. 

It's about a 20 minute drive from the town of Neenach (pronounced Nee-nack), where there's a general store and a cafe. They make a great breakfast burrito. A few minutes from the State Poppy Reserve, which blooms in the spring with miles of California poppies. If you have a larger group or event in mind, get in touch! Joshua Rancho is near the California Poppy reserve. It sits amongst beautiful Joshua Trees with spring desert flowers on the property.This is 2.5 acres of Joshua Tree land in the Antelope Valley north of LA, between the Tehachapi Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains. You will be driving on dirt roads to get to the property. Trucks, SUV’s and mini vans are fine but please understand that the last mile to the camp site is on an unmaintained dirt road that has high and low spots. The land sits near solar farms and there is some light that does come from them. You will have this beautiful spot to yourself. During the winter, the days are pleasant and cool. It does get breezy at night, so dress appropriately. In the summer time it gets nice and hot but does cool down in the evening. The beauty of being out camping here is that there are no rules, nobody watching. Think long dirt roads, tumbleweeds, bones, and maybe some old bullet shells (there's no shooting allowed on the property). This is not a state-maintained, paved, manicured operation you are out here by yourself. You need to bring your own food and water there is nothing out here. Please respect the property and clean up after yourself! This is for people who are comfortable exploring beyond a concrete slab with electricity and janitor-cleaned restrooms. There is a designated camp site with a deck that you can put your tent on or use it as a picnic eating area. The ground around the site does have lots of places to set up camp. Your pets are welcome out here and are free to be off leash. Please remember that there are wild animals that would like to eat your pet. We do provide a place to use the bathroom but you will need to bring your own bags and composting materials. This property is pack in pack out! The property itself is along a dirt road. You will have a level camping area with picnic table surrounded by trees with mountain views in every direction, there is plenty of clean, non potable drinking water, porta potty, limited electrical use, cell phone charging and low power use devices as I am off grid, parking is a few minutes walk from camp site. There is a fitness and nature trail on the property and Pacific Crest trail is approx 20 to 30 min drive, Mountain park which has many miles of hiking trails and an Indian reservation with hikes to many petroglphs. Things to see are the World famous Tehachapi railway loop, historic downtown, vineyards, mountain spirit center a buddhist temple, glider rides, bicycle riding and fishing.
