Hikers and beach enthusiasts will find direct access to coastal bluffs and tide pools from this 50-site campground positioned on a flat hill above Spooner's Cove. The lollipop-style road layout creates an in-and-out configuration with sites spread across both sides, each equipped with picnic tables and fire rings with grills.
Most sites sit in full sun throughout the day with limited privacy between neighbors. Sites 17-19 offer the most shade and foliage separation, backing up to parkland with hillside trails above. The front loop provides slightly more spacing between sites. Ryan W. notes "Sites 17-19 have a decent amount of shade and the most foliage separation."
Clean vault toilets occupy central locations throughout the campground, with two water spigots positioned in the middle area. A camp store operates with limited hours, closing at 4pm daily. The nearby Spooner Ranch House provides historical context and trail information from 10am-4pm. Firewood is available for purchase since collecting downed wood is prohibited within the park.
Wildlife encounters are common here. Raccoons actively investigate campsites after dark, making food storage essential. Some sites include bear boxes, though not all locations have them. Ticks present a notable concern during certain seasons, particularly in tall grass areas. Dogs are welcome in the campground but cannot access trails or beach areas.
The campground operates year-round with reservations available. Coastal fog and cool temperatures persist even during summer months, requiring layers for comfort. Campers exploring the region can find campgrounds near Montaña de Oro State Park for additional options. The setting provides immediate access to the Bluff Trail and multiple hiking routes while maintaining proximity to Los Osos for supplies.
Description
Montana de Oro camping features rugged cliffs, secluded sandy beaches, coastal plains, streams, canyons, and hills, including 1,347-foot Valencia Peak. Naturalists and backpackers enjoy the solitude and freedom found along the park's trails. There are also mountain biking and equestrian trails. The best-known beach is Spooner's Cove, across from the campground. The park's name, "Mountain of Gold," comes from the golden wildflowers that bloom in spring. Wildlife in the park includes black tailed deer and the black oystercatcher. The park includes primitive and equestrian campsites.
A primitive campground in the canyon behind the Spooner Ranch House offers 47 campsites for tents, trailers, or motorhomes. The vehicle length limit for all trailers and motorhomes is 27 feet. Tables, firepits, drinking water, and primitive toilets are nearby. There are no showers or dump stations. Some campers may prefer the walk-in environmental campsites, which are secluded but campers should not be surprised to wake up to the yapping of coyotes or the rustling of other nighttime creatures.
For those who wish to bring horses to the park and camp overnight, there are six horse camps for family and group outings, complete with pipe corrals and limited parking for horse trailers. No horse rentals are available.
