    Fun but dirty and noisy

Great Lake if you can hop on a kayak and get away from the day beach area. Weekends during the summer are crazy. It’s the only real lake in the whole area so it is what it is. We go 3/4 times a year. Bird watching is amazing. Also can hike the trail and see some cows. Water and electric on sites plus fire pits. 6/25/2020

    Kartchner Caverns State Park Campground

The most comfortable campground so far

Can't give this one high enough stars.

We're van camping and working remotely, so our priorities are internet connectivity, electricity, and running water.

The sites are all nice and flat, very well maintained, and pretty well spaced out. For the desert, there's surprisingly good vegetation between sites for privacy (but it is the desert).

The bathrooms are plentiful, immaculate, and have hot water, showers, heated hand dryers, and a dish washing station... All open, even in the winter!

Decent cell coverage on both verizon and t mobile, plus good free WiFi. Our site, in particular, had some issues with the different providers, depending on the direction of the wind, but I was able to work all day.

Our only itty bitty gripe is that the fire rings did not have grills. But really, that's nothing.

    Would gladly stay again!

Oh, and there's some pretty nice trails and caves, too. Make sure you reserve your tour well in advance

    Kartchner Caverns State Park Campground

    Very cool state park

I typically rate campgrounds as they fit into 1 of 5 categories. This campground will be rated as a Regional/Public Park — Grounds that are on public lands, and have a cost for entry and/or overnight stay. Ratings for this category are based on: Cost: 5 Allure of the park/lands: 4 Amenities as available (bathrooms, showers, hookups, etc): 5 Layout and privacy of sites: 4

We wish we had more time to spend here! We used these grounds as a jumping-off point to visit Tombstone (meh), Bisbee & Lowell AZ along with a few other small ghost towns. We also headed to Chiricahua National Monument on our way out of here, though it is a trek(about 90 minutes). The area is remote and has a beautiful mountain backdrop. We weren’t able to explore the caverns at the State Park but will on our next visit! We’ve heard the tours fill up daily, so make reservations for your planned stay.

The price is very fair at $30/ night for electricity and water hookups. The showers and bathrooms were always clean. The layout was quite nice with plenty of personal space.

Worth mentioning, we were there in January and it was very, very cold. We were unaware just how cold AZ could get. This was our awakening.

    Cleanest campsites ever!

1-17-2021 site 33. Talk about clean! This is by far the cleanest campsite I have stayed at. The camp host are really nice and really do care about the camps. Nice and quiet at night. Electric and water at the sites. And some cool Arizona fire rings. We weren’t able to go into the caves because of our small child but there is a hiking trail which was nice. Great weekend getaway. Site 33 is right next to the cabins so are kinda close to there fire pits when relaxing but all the other sites look perfect.

    Kartchner Caverns State Park Campground

    Very nice place

The camp sites are large, offer electric and water. You dump your gray and black at a location just outside of the camp area for free. Lightly shaded. There are picnic benches and fire pits at each site. You can easily walk to the cavern discovery center. There is ample area for little ones to ride bikes or play. Pretty views of the surrounding hills. There are clean restrooms. The stars at night are beautiful!

    Kartchner Caverns State Park Campground

    Lovely, spacious and great facilities

Each site is really big and everything is clean and well maintained. Nearly all sites have electrical and water with a dump station located near the entrance. Each site has a table and fire pit as well as shade from trees. The park hosts the caverns and cave tours and a museum about the area. We are headed on a cave tour today! Nice trails surround the park and clearly marked for either hiking, bike or equestrian.

    Tombstone RV & Campground

    This is a great campground!

Awesome stop! Great campground just down hill from old town tombstone! You wont be disappointed, nicely run and kept, everything you need. Lots to see and do in area. Sierra Vista is about 18 miles with excellent shopping. Bisbee is a fun drive through mountains and fun town to browse as well. Tombstone is well worth the visit, go see the Birdcage, well worth the tour of 1881 multiple purpose bar, brothel, casino card games etc. There is a great leather shop in town. G. D'AMBROSE, I highly recommend his leather work, top quality, I got my gun belt holster while in town, custom made to fit. It was Christmas week and he still got it done in record time, great guy, his saddles and other items were remarkable as well. There were lots of restaurants, saloons, shops, stage coach still running in town. Step back in time and enjoy the old west, dont forget to visit boothill for some of tombstone history. We were there for 9 days, but didnt see it all. The campground has a gate at rear corner, you can walk lots of dessert trails, or some brought there 4 wheelers , golf carts, and rode them. Campground had nice laundry, propane, pool, clubhouse, spaces had rail fences between and nice space. We decorated the fence with Christmas lites, many others did as well.

    Patagonia Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet Campground Even When Full

We visited for our first time for 3 nights and campground was full. Even so, we were surprised how quiet it was. Lots of day use spots if you want to picnic by the lake under trees. Camp sites are sparse (table & fire pit) but we didn't feel as tightly packed as those areas down by the beach. Nice trail out to Sonoita Creek. Store was well stocked and husband even found shaving cream with razor there. Marina has canoes for rent ($35 for 2 hours, with specials for Vets on Mondays and Seniors on Wednesday); 2-person kayaks also for rent (same price); and pontoon boats and row boats (didn't get prices). I got a good 3-mile walk in every morning just walking around campground and out to Marina and day use areas. Also nice that lake has no wake zone near campground and boats can go faster on furthest away part of the lake. You definitely need to bring something to use on the lake or take advantage if marina rentals!

Guide to Huachuca City

Glamping close to Huachuca City, Arizona offers experiences amid the region's desert ecosystem at 4,300 feet elevation. Temperature swings can be significant, with summer daytime highs often exceeding 100°F and winter nights dropping below freezing. What to do

Explore cave tours with advance scheduling: At Kartchner Caverns State Park Campground, visitors can join guided cave experiences that require reservations. "We reserved and did the Rotunda/Throne Tour. It was very cool and our 1st cave tour. I would suggest reading the rules for tours before reserving. Access to the cavern is very controlled as far as how you get in and what you can take," explains Bill R.

Hike marked desert trails: Several trail options connect to camping areas with varying difficulty levels. "I hiked the Foothills Loop which was challenging in spots especially around the apex. Walking sticks are recommended. The views were awesome," notes Lisa S. about her hiking experience at Kartchner Caverns.

Visit historic Tombstone: Located within 30 minutes of most glamping options near Huachuca City, Tombstone offers Western heritage experiences. A visitor at Tombstone RV & Campground shared, "We embraced the WildWest and chose to stay at Tombstone RV park. We pulled up our boot straps and mounted the 4WD pony and headed to town, which was just up the road. There is a boothill cemetary and the legendary downtown Tombstone and the OK Corral."

Bird watching opportunities: During migration seasons, desert playas attract significant bird populations. A visitor to Playa Dispersed Campsite reported, "Got here about 6 PM and the lagoon was filled with cranes. Got amazing pictures of them. In the morning the lagoon was empty. You must have to get here during certain migrations."

What campers like

Clean facilities and reliable amenities: Campers consistently mention the upkeep of facilities in the area. "Stayed one night will return to explore more. Clean restrooms, nice showers, friendly camp hosts," reports Harold P. about Kartchner Caverns State Park Campground.

Spacious campsites at select locations: Sites with adequate space for setup receive positive reviews. "Each site is really big and everything is clean and well maintained. Nearly all sites have electrical and water with a dump station located near the entrance. Each site has a table and fire pit as well as shade from trees," notes Alivia M.

Dark sky viewing conditions: The limited light pollution creates optimal conditions for astronomy. "It's super dark at night, so sky viewing is great!" mentions Jennifer H. Areas around Empire Ranch provide particularly good viewing opportunities, with one camper noting, "It had wonderful vistas, a big sky and was breezy."

Wildlife encounters: Desert ecosystems near Huachuca City support diverse wildlife. A visitor to Kartchner Caverns warned, "Watch your step, we came across a Diamond Back Rattle Snake about 4 feet from our picnic bench." This wildlife presence extends to birds, with areas around Desert Oasis Campground featuring "great desert birds" according to mary F.

What you should know

Summer heat requires planning: Temperature management is essential during warmer months. "It's Arizona, summer times will be hot, our temp in June was 108," reports David T. about conditions at Kartchner Caverns.

Seasonal bird migrations affect experience: Wildlife viewing opportunities change throughout the year. Ken at Playa Dispersed Campsite explains, "You must have to get here during certain migrations" to see the sandhill cranes and other migratory birds.

Limited cell service in some areas: Connectivity varies significantly between established and dispersed camping options. "The clubhouse with pool tables, TV's, etc. Great wi-fi and cell coverage (AT&T)," notes Gary M. about Desert Oasis Campground, indicating better coverage than more remote locations.

Reservation requirements vary: Many glamping options near Huachuca City require advance planning. "We stayed here for 5 nights at the end of March, 2023. The campground has paved roads, showers, dump station, water & electric hookups and the usual campsite set-up," shared Bill R., who planned their stay at Kartchner Caverns well in advance.

Tips for camping with families

Pack for temperature swings: Desert climate requires preparation for both hot days and cool nights. "The campsite is beautiful in a way only the desert can be," writes one reviewer, but practical campers note the temperature variations. A visitor to Kartchner Caverns mentioned, "Restrooms with showers, flush toilets and heat. Elevation 4,639," highlighting the need for heating during cooler months.

Select campsites with shade: Limited natural shade makes site selection important for family comfort. "Each site has a table and fire pit as well as shade from trees," notes Alivia M. about Kartchner Caverns, an important feature for daytime comfort.

Consider family-friendly attractions: Patagonia Lake State Park Campground provides water-based recreation options. "A nice feature is the lake and boat rental within the park. Bird watching is very popular here we learned as we talked to others at the park," shares Sara S., highlighting activities suitable for different age groups.

Check grocery access: Remote glamping sites require planning for supplies. "If you forget something Walmart is one exit over," advises Drea M. about the convenience of staying at Kartchner Caverns State Park Campground.

Tips from RVers

Watch turning radius requirements: Some campgrounds have challenging access points. At Tombstone RV & Campground, one RVer noted, "Although the park is big rig friendly, we found the turn into the row very tight for our 37ft 5th wheel and long tow vehicle (about 55ft total rig length). Once in the proper row, the turn into the pull through sites is easy."

Check site leveling before setup: Terrain varies significantly between campgrounds. "Our parking spot was level but nothing else. Leaving us without a great spot to put our chairs and table," shares Candy P. about her experience at Patagonia Lake.

Verify hookup functionality: Some campers report issues with electrical connections. "The shore power 30 amp showed reverse polarity and a faulty ground, so we used the 50 amp with a dog bone," reports an RVer at Cactus Country RV Park.

Consider premium glamping options: For those seeking upscale accommodations near Huachuca City, several campgrounds offer enhanced options. "Terrific views and close to needed amenities. Shower and bathrooms very clean," notes Michael S. about Cactus Country RV Park, which provides a more resort-like experience for RVers.
