Cottonwood Campground — Roper Lake State Park

    Well maintained, great hiking

We found the ranger to be very helpful in terms of outdoor activities (hiking, fishing, etc.) The park has great spaces for tent campers and big rigs, with electricity for 30 and 50 amp campers. They also have several cabins right on the lake.

Our spot had a picnic table and was right beside the beach. There is a great hike only minutes from the campground where you can see Mt. Graham.

The bathrooms, showers, and sinks were all well maintained. Also, the spot is great for stargazing.

We are looking forward to returning. The town of Safford is charming and has some nice restaurants too.

    Alaskan RV Park

Take a trip down Music Road for a great stay!

Alaskan RV Park is conveniently located off of I-10 at Exit 366 near Bowie. The park features affordable RV sites at $20/night. The sites are all spacious pull-throughs. There is a dump station on site($10), and water refill available (based on tank size, but not more than $20). The park is handicap accessible and pet friendly. No breed restrictions. Tenting is also available. There are showers and laundry available. Alaskan RV Park is Bowie's best kept secret as it was the site of the Sideman Jamboree each year and featured music from country stars. The park hopes to bring music back to the stage in the future.

    Grande Vista RV Park

Friendly Staff, Gravel spots, Clean and convenient to Willcox

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the Male showers/restroom was under construction and not usable.

Gravel drive-through and back-in spots for RVs with 30 or 50 amp connections, water and sewer. Two tent spots. North of Willcox, but the city is small enough that the whole town is within walking distance (we walked to the center of town in about 15 minutes).

This is basically an old trailer park that has been upgraded to accommodate RVs around the perimeter and a couple of tents near the park/restroom area.

The shower/restroom area also has laundry facilities.

We didn't go into the rec room, but were told it has a pool table and a book/video exchange-type library.

The Rodeo grounds are a short drive across the freeway (don't follow your GPS if it tells you to use airport road - take the route that uses Rex Allen Drive) at Quail park (about 2 miles away - straight shot).  This is a very convenient park to the Rodeo Grounds.

This park, as was all of Willcox (even though it was Rex Allen Days weekend) is VERY QUIET. Didn't see anyone other than a couple of dog walkers in the morning and the staff when we checked in.

    Grande Vista RV Park

Who knew internet speeds would be the fastest I've ever seen

I have Verizon and management stated Verizon is the best in this small town and look at my screen shot, it's no joke. He said all other carriers suck.

This is on top of their 2 free wifi access they provide which are already fast! So if you need to get work done and reliant on good internet speeds, you've found the spot.

Place is a mix of mobile homes and RV park. Each site has their own picnic table and FHU. Water spigot is on the ground, not elevated. Laundry, showers, rec room (pool table, full kitchen, DVDs, books) and BBQ grill are included. Cats roaming everywhere. Fairly flat gravel parking. Management had to put me in a 50 amp site (#9) because their 30 amp sites were full at no extra charge. He even let me borrow the 50/30 amp converter as I didn't have one. Management lives in a mobile home near office and it was nice as he is available after regular hours.

Quiet place overall. If you come on trash day (Tuesday), you might get woken up by it if you're in our site as it's next to the alley.

As stated, very small town. We had dinner at Isabella's South Of The Border. Food wasn't as great as the reviews but decent for the area. Fun tip: Isabella is the wife of the owner of The Big Tex BBQ.

    Coal Creek Campground

    Not too secluded

This campground is a little unclear the sign on the road before the campground just shows a picnic table but once you are into the spot it does have the 14 day limit sign. It is right on the road and the road isn’t too busy but the noise is there. The spot has a pit toilet, fire rings and barbecues. The site are not marked so not sure how many there are. There is no cell coverage here but the trees give plenty of shade to beat the desert heat! If you travel east just before the site there was a huge area where people were camping. It was much easier to access for big rigs but has no toilet, fire rings, tables or barbecues. These campers all had their side by sides out since the area has a lot of trails to access. The spot is cooler at night but perfect temperature during the day for family activities outside. Be sure to bring the bug spray!!

    Haekel Rd Dispersed Camping

Nice spot with great views, easy access to goods/services 8m away.

Nice Spot. Easy to find, and easy to find a spot. Big Rig friendly in the 1st area. Gets a little tighter the further down you go like most places. We stayed in the 1st area for stronger internet & less fuel consumption when we go to town. Diesel prices are stupid right now. We found a nice level unobstructed spot looking out at the snow capped peaks of Mt. Graham. Verizon via Visible 2-3 bars. ATT via Straight Talk 3-4. Haven't tried OTA channels. 4 Rigs in the 1st area, about a football field apart. Some overnighters, but most we talked to here 7-14 days. Minimal trash, but some. Pretty quiet and only about 8m to town, but it feels more remote. Free dump station at the Water Reclamation Plant in Safford, just sign in, dump, sign out. They also have water to rinse, not potable. Cute diner in town called Jerry's. Good burgers at JD's sports bar (loud though). Great RV repair shop (Trek RV) squeezed us in for a Furnace motor issue. This one gets added to the Will RETURN list.

    Black Jack Campground

    Happy Little Trees!

So google tells you to drive with confidence if you venture up highway 78. You really can believe what you read on the internet! It is a very steep, narrow and windy road. However the fear will soon be replaced with amazement when you reach Black Jack at the top of the mountain. This camp ground is great. It is big rig friendly and right off the road. When you arrive there are 2 larger group spot right away. They have fire rings, barbecues and picnic tables. Then you can go left or right. Left will take you back to a treed area without tables, pits or barbecues. It not clear if you can camp here but it is part of the park. Most likely an overflow area. If you go right this is where you will find more camp sites with tables, fire rings and barbecues. There also 2 pit towels down this road. There are no visible numbers marking the spots. So we ended up taking a spot without a table, fire ring or barbecue. The spots are not level so bring your blocks or sleep on the at a slant. The trees offer shade at all the sites but there was a sign telling visitors that wind could blow them over and be aware. This place also has access to a trail. We walked it but it was wide enough for an ATV and recent tracks looked like someone rode on it. Looks like the trail goes about 4 miles. You can also go about 2 1/2 miles to Martinez road and that offers tons of riding as well. If you go past the last pit toilet there is at least one spot to camp and go a little farther you will have experience a view of the whole valley! Definitely recommend especially if you need respite from the desert heat! No cell coverage here!

    Alaskan RV Park

    Sweet little park

We really liked this simple little RV park. Friendly and has character, even though it's like many other RV parks with the large gravel lot.   Nice backdrop of the mountains.  We liked the music vibe of the place, and that it is such a laid back and welcoming place.

Right off highway 10 so you get the road noise. Park has large gravel/dirt sites with hook ups.

Rate is $20/night with laundry, showers and bathrooms.

Pet friendly. Staff friendly as well.

Guide to Pima

RV sites near Pima, Arizona range from large parks with full hookups to smaller campgrounds with mountain views. The region sits at elevations between 2,000-4,000 feet in the Gila Valley, with Mt. Graham rising to over 10,000 feet nearby. Winter temperatures typically stay above freezing in the valley locations, making this area popular with seasonal RV travelers seeking milder desert winters.

What to do

Hot springs access: Roper Lake State Park features a natural hot springs area that draws visitors year-round. "We enjoyed the hot springs hot tub in the campground. Clean, beautiful and friendly staff," notes one camper. The springs maintain a consistent temperature and provide a unique relaxation option after hiking.

Wildlife viewing: Campers report regular quail sightings at several campgrounds. At Alaskan RV Park, one visitor mentioned, "Quail crossing in the campground!" The surrounding desert landscape supports diverse bird species, especially during migration seasons.

Mountain exploration: Mt. Graham provides a cooler alternative during summer heat. "Sunday I drove up Mt. Graham till the road turn to dirt and enjoyed the cold and quite," reports a Roper Lake visitor. The mountain offers significantly cooler temperatures, sometimes 20-30 degrees below valley readings during summer months.

What campers like

Affordability: RV accommodations near Pima offer value compared to other Arizona destinations. "We are staying here for 6 days. Mostly quiet and peaceful. We have Passport America so the price is right. Full hookups," notes a visitor at North Clifton RV Park. Alaskan RV Park maintains competitive rates at $20 nightly for full hookups.

Friendly atmosphere: Campgrounds in the region tend toward relaxed management styles. "Such a friendly group of people. I considered I-10 as my 'white noise' and did not bother me. Good Verizon signal and clean restroom," writes one Alaskan RV Park guest.

Internet quality: Surprisingly fast internet speeds appeal to remote workers. At Grande Vista RV Park, one reviewer was impressed: "Who knew internet speeds would be the fastest I've ever seen... Place is a mix of mobile homes and RV park. Each site has their own picnic table and FHU."

What you should know

Cell service details: Verizon provides the most reliable coverage throughout the area. "I have Verizon and management stated Verizon is the best in this small town... He said all other carriers suck," reports a Grande Vista RV Park camper. This matches experiences at other nearby campgrounds.

Dump station availability: Some parks have occasional septic system issues during busy periods. One camper at Fort Willcox RV Park reported: "Had to notify manager that drains not draining: she said septic tank full had to wait hour for it to drain before I could empty my tanks."

Temperature variations: Cattlerest RV Park and Saloon notes significant temperature drops after sunset. "We stayed at Cattlerest as a Harvest Host because the weather was plenty cool to dry camp," writes one visitor. Daily temperature swings of 30+ degrees are common in this desert climate.

Tips for camping with families

Campground selection: Not all RV parks welcome children. "I was told they accepted children and then told my kids were not welcome," reports one attempted visitor at Fort Willcox RV Park. Always confirm child policies when booking.

Recreation options: Roper Lake State Park offers family-friendly amenities. "Very nice campgrounds, close to the lake. Plenty of space between campsites. Kids were able to ride bikes on the numerous paths around the campgrounds and lake," notes a family camper.

Seasonal considerations: School breaks bring increased child activity levels at state parks. "Little kids on bicycles riding in the roads like crazy people and making so much noise, it was dangerous and annoying," reports one off-season camper suddenly surrounded by weekend families at Roper Lake State Park.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Most commercial RV parks feature level gravel parking areas. "Fairly flat gravel parking. Management had to put me in a 50 amp site (#9) because their 30 amp sites were full at no extra charge," notes a Grande Vista RV Park visitor.

Entertainment options: Lifestyle RV Resort & Fitness Center combines camping with fitness amenities. "The fitness center is a fantastic addition, offering a perfect blend of activity and relaxation," writes one visitor. Cattlerest RV Park and Saloon provides social activities: "The saloon is not only a bar but has ton of activities such as pool, corn hole, shuffle bored, line dancing, music and more."

Membership discounts: Several RV parks near Pima accept discount programs. "Selected this RV park for the following reasons: Passport America discount, not along the railroad, I-10 or in the desert... $18 per night with full hookups," notes a Grande Vista RV Park visitor, highlighting the 50% savings available.
