Gila Campground — Roper Lake State Park

Nice area- if you get the right spot

My husband, myself and our 2 small dogs live in Tucson, AZ. We recently acquired a roof top tent and we’ve been trying out various campgrounds across the Southwest.

Water recreation areas in AZ are sparse, so this place holds a certain appeal. The facilities are nice and clean but if you’re not careful you could end up with only a view of your neighbors. We didn’t stay at the tent cabins, but they also looked nice. I’d come back to stay in the cabins with a group of friends or as a one night stop on the way somewhere else. It’s a great place to stop, swim, shower and hit the road for another adventure. When you haven’t seen a shower in days, they are so beckoning.

Pros: larger sites and further spaced out then your typical RV park. Several sites include a covered picnic table(most in the Gila Loop do not). All sites have water, a fire pit and a table. Also- fishing! $20 a night for non-electric site is a good price since you can take free hot showers in the park. Cell phone service (T-Mobile) and WiFi).

Cons: Most sites don’t have much of a view. Very few trees. Only a few sites are suited for tent camping. Busy park, expect to see a lot of other campers. Hot tub is permanently closed.

Cottonwood Campground — Roper Lake State Park

    Gorgeous AZ park!

Loved it.Great family friendly camping! Very clean and well kept park, beach swimming area is very large and never felt crowded by people!  Plenty of shaded picnic areas, campsites big, and on site bathrooms very clean and showers have hot water and great water pressure! Only downfall was the hot springs was closed, but not necessary when campinge in Arizona!

If you like fishing you mihght be a bit disappointed. you could see a ton of fish around the dock, but sadly none of them were biting or we just didn't have the right kind of bait.We don't come here too often because you have to pay each time you come unless you get a pass. But it's a fun place to swim and fish and be by some water when it's ridiculously hot.

Loved the pool and cabins even though we have a camper

Gila Campground — Roper Lake State Park

    Great in December

Camped for a week over Christmas 2020 and really enjoyed the serenity in the “non-hook up” loop? Tables, fire rings and grills, and water all available. Site 46 is on the lake which hosts a variety of water fowl. The sites are large with plenty of screening for privacy. I would not stay in the hook up loops which are more typical Arizona State Park Campgrounds offering no privacy with sites usually crammed together. Walking trails all over the place including one that leads up to the Mesa top. There’s a beach, several docks for fishing and a boat ramp. Excellent staff.

Lots of road noise. This campground is located right next to a highway and on an exit. There is constant road noise from the highway. If you are parked next to the highway you are approx 12 feet from the actual highway road itself and can feel and hear every single vehicle that drives by.

    Grande Vista RV Park

Who knew internet speeds would be the fastest I've ever seen

I have Verizon and management stated Verizon is the best in this small town and look at my screen shot, it's no joke. He said all other carriers suck.

This is on top of their 2 free wifi access they provide which are already fast! So if you need to get work done and reliant on good internet speeds, you've found the spot.

Place is a mix of mobile homes and RV park. Each site has their own picnic table and FHU. Water spigot is on the ground, not elevated. Laundry, showers, rec room (pool table, full kitchen, DVDs, books) and BBQ grill are included. Cats roaming everywhere. Fairly flat gravel parking. Management had to put me in a 50 amp site (#9) because their 30 amp sites were full at no extra charge. He even let me borrow the 50/30 amp converter as I didn't have one. Management lives in a mobile home near office and it was nice as he is available after regular hours.

Quiet place overall. If you come on trash day (Tuesday), you might get woken up by it if you're in our site as it's next to the alley.

As stated, very small town. We had dinner at Isabella's South Of The Border. Food wasn't as great as the reviews but decent for the area. Fun tip: Isabella is the wife of the owner of The Big Tex BBQ.

    Grande Vista RV Park

Friendly Staff, Gravel spots, Clean and convenient to Willcox

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the Male showers/restroom was under construction and not usable.

Gravel drive-through and back-in spots for RVs with 30 or 50 amp connections, water and sewer. Two tent spots. North of Willcox, but the city is small enough that the whole town is within walking distance (we walked to the center of town in about 15 minutes).

This is basically an old trailer park that has been upgraded to accommodate RVs around the perimeter and a couple of tents near the park/restroom area.

The shower/restroom area also has laundry facilities.

We didn't go into the rec room, but were told it has a pool table and a book/video exchange-type library.

The Rodeo grounds are a short drive across the freeway (don't follow your GPS if it tells you to use airport road - take the route that uses Rex Allen Drive) at Quail park (about 2 miles away - straight shot).  This is a very convenient park to the Rodeo Grounds.

This park, as was all of Willcox (even though it was Rex Allen Days weekend) is VERY QUIET. Didn't see anyone other than a couple of dog walkers in the morning and the staff when we checked in.

Guide to Pima

Roper Lake State Park sits at approximately 3,130 feet elevation in southeastern Arizona, near the town of Pima. The park features a 32-acre lake surrounded by desert landscape with views of Mount Graham. During winter months, temperatures typically range from 40°F to 80°F, creating milder conditions than summer when temperatures can exceed 100°F.

What to do

Hiking opportunities: Several trails around Roper Lake State Park offer different difficulty levels for visitors. "Great scenery. Spots are spacious. Seemed kind of pricey at $20 a night. If you luck out and get respectful neighbors, can be an amazing experience," notes one camper.

Water recreation: The 32-acre lake at Roper Lake allows non-motorized boats and fishing for bass, catfish, and trout. "Very nice campgrounds, close to the lake. Plenty of space between campsites. Kids were able to ride bikes on the numerous paths around the campgrounds and lake," shares Ryan V.

Mount Graham excursions: Located approximately 30 minutes from glamping close to Pima, Arizona, Mount Graham offers cooler temperatures and different ecosystems. "Sunday I drove up Mt. Graham till the road turn to dirt and enjoyed the cold and quite. By the time I came back down the Mt. and went back to camp, all those little Kamikaze bicycle turds had left and it was back to quite," reports one visitor to Cottonwood Campground.

What campers like

Spacious camping sites: Many sites at Gila Campground offer privacy and room to spread out. "The sites are large with plenty of screening for privacy. I would not stay in the hook up loops which are more typical Arizona State Park Campgrounds offering no privacy with sites usually crammed together," notes Lisa S.

Birdwatching opportunities: The lake attracts various waterfowl, making it ideal for wildlife viewing. "Camped for a week over Christmas 2020 and really enjoyed the serenity in the 'non-hook up' loop. Site 46 is on the lake which hosts a variety of water fowl," shares a Gila Campground visitor.

Winter camping conditions: Milder temperatures during winter months make for comfortable camping. "We visited in November, so temperatures ranged from the 80s during the day down to the 40s in the night. The campsites were very clean and well-maintained, and at the time we visited, the campground was very quiet," reports Colby F.

What you should know

Facility maintenance issues: Some amenities may be temporarily unavailable. "Sadly, there is construction going on in the park right now. It is windy and cold. The sites are pretty private and there are nice picnic table covers. Unfortunately, the dump station is closed for a while," notes Shawn at Roper Lake State Park.

Seasonal crowding: Weekends and holidays bring more visitors, especially families with children. "I got there on Thursday afternoon and all was nice and quite and calm. They started to come in droves, Friday afternoon. Little kids on bicycles riding in the roads like crazy people and making so much noise," reports Mindy H.

Road access challenges: Some camping areas near Pima have difficult access roads. "A little tricky to get to, especially with a trailer as the road is basically a single lane," reports Justin G. about Riverview Campground, a glamping option close to Pima, Arizona.
