Best RV Parks & Resorts near Valley Head, AL

Several RV parks offer full hookup sites near Valley Head and the surrounding mountain region. Little River RV Park & Campground provides 64 sites with water, sewer, and electrical connections including 50-amp service for larger motorhomes. 1776 RV And Campground in Mentone features 14 gravel RV sites with full hookups and reliable WiFi despite poor cell reception in the area. Wills Creek RV Park accommodates big rigs with spacious sites, though some visitors note the newly developed section has tight spacing and uneven terrain. Tranquility Campground offers full hookup RV sites in a wooded setting with lake access. "Sites weren't particularly level, all gravel and the grass appeared hastily sown over unleveled soil with large clumps of clay and rocks present."

Most RV parks in the region operate year-round, making them accessible during all seasons including fall when the area's foliage draws visitors. Sharp turns and mountain roads can present challenges for larger motorhomes, particularly when accessing parks near DeSoto State Park and Little River Canyon. Dump stations are available at most established RV parks, though amenities vary significantly between properties. Cell service is unreliable throughout much of the mountainous terrain, with one visitor noting "very poor signal but WiFi works great all over the park." Pets are generally permitted at all area RV parks. Laundry facilities exist at select locations, though they may be some distance from campsites in larger parks. Advance reservations are strongly recommended during peak seasons.

    DeSoto State Park Campground

    Very quiet and relaxing

Desoto State Park is on top of Lookout Mountain about 8 miles northeast of Fort Payne, In Northeast Alabama. DeSoto Falls - also part of DeSoto State Park - is located about 7 miles north of the park near Mentone, Alabama. The Campground has 94 full-hookup tent and RV sites. Most are Back-In Sites, with a few Pull-Thru. All sites have water, & electric, and sewer. They are about 16 feet by 60 feet deep with 50/30 Amp Service, Cable TV.
There are picnic tables and Grills on each site. There are two large bathroom/shower buildings with coin-operated laundry. There is a Wi-fi hotspots at each bathhouse (wifi does not reach to every campsite) There are also Primitive Camping sites for tents as well as two back country campsites with shelters. Along with camping, Kayaking, fishing, hiking, biking, cycling, rappelling, bouldering and picnicking are popular.

    Boaz RV Park

Cheap rates, and a great location.

This is a small rv park located in Boaz Al, its just down the street from the Boaz police station so its nice and quiet. They don't have a lot of amenities like pools, or playgrounds but its great if you just need a cheap place to stay. As of this review its $20 a night for either a 30 or a 50 amp hookup along with water and sewer. The monthly rates are $400 for 30 amp sites and $500 for 50 amp sites.

    Lake Guntersville State Park Campground

    Lovely area to stay!

We arrived one day early which was semi planned, but we were not in the spot we were staying for 11 days. Thank goodness because the pic on the site Vs reality was a pretty big difference. We have a big rig and no way we would fit. I figured I would have to finagle something in my own to get us a different site. NOPE! They guy at the gate helped us out and 5 min later we had a site! Store has a few things in it, including some Lake stickers/shirts/etc with Lake Guntersville on them. There is a little library box by the store with books people have put in after reading. There are sites for full hookup, water/electric, or primitive. There are long term sites as well. There is plenty to do! Beach, boat, water pad, basketball and tennis courts. Laundry available. Nice bathrooms and bathhouse. Dog park for bigs and Littles! The power went out once for a couple minutes and then again due to an accident on the mountain. There are neat things within the park to see and do. Hike/trails, golf, fish, zip line, horseback riding. A must stop is to see the donkeys, goats and emus. Towing to get here is interesting, but doable! We have a 42 ft RV with a 16 ft boat behind and we made it. Close enough to town but you have to go over the mountain. There are some neat stores down town and a farmers market.

    Buck's Pocket State Park Campground

    A great park reopened!

We stayed at Bucks Pocket State Park recently for five nights and had a wonderful time. This park was recently reopened after being closed for a few years, lots of work has been completed to the campground and facilities. The sites are very nice with full concrete pads, 50/30 amp electrical, water, picnic table, fire ring and grill. There are a few sites that are on the bank of Sauty Creek that also have sewer hook ups. This is a very small campground with only 23 RV sites, 4 of them are pull through. There are also about 8 tent only sites. There are clean and well stocked bathrooms located at the park office and also includes a laundry facility. The office also sells firewood and ice if needed.

There are a few hiking trails that range in levels of difficulty, we hiked the trail to the overlook that I would classify as pretty arduous, the pay off was the Little Sauty Creek waterfall near the top and the beautiful vista of Point Lookout. The trail ascends 800 feet in elevation from the pocket floor to the summit so plan accordingly. There is also an off road vehicle (ORV) trail here so the park attracts these vehicles to the campground on the weekends.

The park host (Jesse and his wife) are very friendly and involved, he is visible throughout the day ensuring the park is maintained and orderly.

There will be little to no cell service or over the air TV reception due to the park being in the valley floor. The park does provide good WIFI that could be received throughout the campground.

A huge thank you to the State of Alabama for providing the resources to restore this great facility to the state park system. Also, an extra recognition to the A Year to Volunteer (https://www.youtube.com/c/AYeartoVolunteer) organization for the extraordinary effort and contribution to this park's rebirth.

    DeSoto State Park Campground

    A Family Favorite

Desoto State Park is one of our favorite Alabama places to visit, located in Northeastern Alabama and the southern end of Lookout Mountain. We try to camp here in the spring and fall each year when available, the closest towns are Fort Payne and Mentone. There are ample shopping areas and restaurants in Fort Payne which is about 10 miles from the campground if you need to make the trip down. The park has so much to offer and the staff there goes the extra effort to ensure your stays are pleasant and enjoyable. The hiking trails are abundant throughout the park, the Scout Trail is our favorite as it winds next to the river banks and over numerous rocks and scenic water features. This trail can be physically challenging and be sure to verify the river levels beforehand.

The campground is well maintained and the sites are level for the most part, our favorite site is 25 but we’ve stayed in several others end enjoyed those as well. The sites in the upper and lower loops are mostly back in sites with a couple of pull through and buddy sites also. The middle section is all pull through sites for the large coaches and 5th wheel RV’s. All sites at Desoto are equipped with water, electric, sewer, cable TV, table, fire ring and grills. The bath houses are some of the cleanest we’ve seen, relatively new with excellent amenities including laundry. There is also WIFI broadcast at each of the bath houses.

There is a great lodge restaurant, cabins old and new, swimming pool, tennis courts, Zip Line and a CCC museum. Put this one on your list as it’s never disappointed our family. The Little River Canyon Preserve is nearby with additional hiking and fantastic Canyon vistas you will have to go see.

    Battlefield Campground & RV Park

    Woodsy Wayside

Battlefield Campground is an extremely convenient RV park located right of I-75 about 20 minutes south of Chattanooga. It is very easy to get to, but part of that convenience comes with an absence of quiet; the interstate runs directly beside the campground, and is visible from the storage sites across from sites 11-24.

This is an excellent place for long-term campers, and it includes a nice playground, a pool, and a camp store/clubhouse. We could not get close to the pool or playground as they were closed due to COVID-19, which was comforting that they are taking public safety seriously. Sites include 50 and 30 amp full service, and seven tent sites in the middle of the campground that also include electric. There are seven camping cabins spaced throughout the campground that have outside picnic tables and grills, and beds inside as well as electricity.

Most of the sites here are nicely wooded, and as the area is slightly hilly there are elevation changes between several rows of sites which allows for a little more privacy than many RV parks offer.

Downsides to this park are the highway noise, and the campground roads are paved but in need of maintenance; the road is eroded in a lot of places.

Upsides are the sites are shady and well landscaped, and there are great amenities for families looking to stay here for extended periods of time, as well as the proximity to Chattanooga, Chickamauga Battlefield, and Ringold/Ft. Oglethorpe.

    Wills Creek RV Park

    Good Location

Quiet RV park close to Ft Payne and surrounding parks such as Desoto state Park. Close to Little River Canyon waterfall among others. (A must see). Sites at park very close together and our dually truck had to be parked sideways in front or back of site. One side of park is for long term stays while the other side is for up to two week stays. Other than that friendly check in and was able to have ups delivery. Available Sites are able to be chosen when get there.  Internet using Verizon (nomad) for work is only ok. My husband was able to work on conference calls ect but had one dropped call and while he was working I wasn’t able to use our internet. Evening hours when trying to stream sling was difficult to non existent the second week of our stay. Gave it 4 stars due to friendliness and ups delivery.

Perfect for smaller rigs or tents

The Foster Falls campground has 26 rustic campsites ideal for tents or small trailers. The Foster Falls Campground is the only camping area in the park where guests may park a car and/or pop-ups next to the campsite. The campground is open year-round.

There are no water or electric hook-ups but a restroom and heated showers are available. No gas generators are allowed at the Foster Falls Campground. Water must be filtered from natural sources or carried in, be sure to check with the ranger stations about water availability. A pit toilet is also available at each campground.

Guide to Valley Head

Camping sites near Valley Head, Alabama sit at elevations ranging from 650 to 1,800 feet within the foothills of Lookout Mountain, contributing to cooler summer temperatures than surrounding lowlands. Fall camping in this region typically features nighttime temperatures 10-15 degrees cooler than daytime highs. Many campgrounds operate within 20 miles of Valley Head, with both wooded sites near Mentone and open sites with mountain views closer to Fort Payne.

What to do

Hiking near Little River Canyon: Little River RV Park & Campground provides access to nearby canyon trails. "This site is well taken care of and provides reservations. They are also extremely close to the Little River Canyon park which makes it worth it. The canyon is gorgeous and provides for some amazing views especially if you drive the entire scenic road and stop at all the lookouts," notes one camper.

Waterfall exploration: DeSoto Falls sits less than a mile from Tranquility Campground. "You can easily get to Desoto falls by foot (.85 mile) with spectacular views. Also this park is just minutes from downtown Mentone and super close to Desoto State Park," states a review.

Kayaking on Cedar Creek: Cedar Creek RV & Outdoor Center offers rentals and guided trips. "This place is so quiet and peaceful. We fully enjoyed be able to relax by the creek and watch the water flow by. If you are looking for a quiet, reflective park this is the place," shares one visitor.

What campers like

Mountain climate: 1776 RV And Campground in Mentone features cooler temperatures due to elevation. "Nice quiet small campground just outside downtown Mentone. Friendly helpful camp host, clean bathhouse, full hook ups and great wifi access so husband could work from camper. Lots of hiking trails within a short drive," reports one camper.

Proximity to outdoor activities: Mentone's location provides easy access to multiple recreation areas. "I love this campground. It's located right off the main highway, and has pull-through spots with full hookups. But the best part is the screaming fast internet! We work from home and the internet was so fast, people were amazed when I told them I was at a campground," notes one remote worker staying at 1776 RV.

Well-maintained wooded sites: Little River RV Park & Campground offers shaded camping spots. "This is my go to campground in fort Payne Alabama. The owners are super nice!! There is a pond with cute ducks!! You can buy a bundle of fire wood for $5. It is less than a mile from little river canyon national park!" shares an enthusiastic camper.

What you should know

Terrain challenges: Sites throughout the region have variable levelness and accessibility. "Most sites have a slight to moderate slope to them. Lots of shade. Close to DeSoto State Park that has lots of hiking and site-seeing. Good alternative when DeSoto campground has no availability," explains one visitor to Little River RV Park.

Cell service limitations: Wills Creek RV Park has better connectivity than most. "Quiet RV park close to Ft Payne and surrounding parks such as Desoto state Park. Close to Little River Canyon waterfall among others. Internet using Verizon (nomad) for work is only ok. My husband was able to work on conference calls etc but had one dropped call," notes a remote worker.

Seasonal timing considerations: Fall brings peak tourism with its associated crowds. "We were there for the start of the fall colors changing and the views were awesome!" reports one camper, while another mentions "Foliage was still pretty, but would have been better end of October" when describing their visit to Tranquility Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Lake access for fishing: Tranquility Campground offers catch-and-release fishing. "There is a 6 acre lake for fishing but it's catch & release. And no swimming or kayaks allowed. There was a bath house with toilets and showers not too far from the tent camping sites," explains one visitor.

Playground facilities: Several campgrounds include play areas for children. "The playground was fun for my kiddos although it really wasn't age appropriate for our 3 year old twins very well," notes one family camping at Cedar Creek RV & Outdoor Center.

Spacious sites for family activities: Look for campgrounds with room for games and gathering. "We parked our 22ft travel trailer at site 30 which was bounded to the north and east by the tent camping area. While the RV sites aren't very private, there is plenty of space to escape your neighbor," reports a family at Cedar Creek RV & Outdoor Center.

Tips from RVers

Utility placement considerations: RV sites near Valley Head, Alabama sometimes have unusual hookup arrangements. "We were placed in the new addition of the park, where the sites were very tight and the utility hookups where in a strange position (the neighbors' utilities actually were under our awning when extended)," notes one RVer at Wills Creek RV Park.

Internet reliability for remote work: Reliable connectivity exists despite spotty cell service. "Bob and his family recently purchased the park and are working hard to make it better. If you plan on using your cell up here...don't very poor signal but WI FI works great all over the park. It is small yes but so peaceful," reports an RVer at 1776 RV And Campground.

Site surface conditions: Many RV parks feature gravel pads with variable levelness. "One night stop and it's a great place. Water, electric and sewer which is a huge plus. Sites are level and easy to access," notes one RVer at Hawkins Pointe RV Park, while others mentioned gravel sites requiring leveling blocks at several local campgrounds.
