Best Cabin Camping near Semmes, AL

Several state parks and private campgrounds around Semmes, Alabama provide cozy cabins with varying amenities and comfort levels. Blakeley State Park offers both primitive and modern cabin options, with the primitive "Squirrels Nest" cabins featuring screened walls, wooden sleeping platforms for twin and queen beds, and outdoor decks with seating. According to one visitor, "Basically open air cabins. 2 walls, a roof and 2 walls of screens... outside a large deck with bench seating. Below is a fire pit and picnic table." Meaher State Park Campground includes waterfront furnished cabins with climate control and basic amenities. Gulf State Park in Orange Beach provides more upscale cabin accommodations with modern three-bedroom layouts featuring screened porches, full kitchens, and climate control systems.

Cabin types range from rustic to fully furnished, with most requiring advance reservations, especially during peak summer months. The primitive cabins at Blakeley State Park are ideal for those seeking a more authentic outdoor experience, while the modern cabins at Gulf State Park cater to families wanting additional comfort. Most cabin rentals are pet-friendly with specific restrictions, though policies vary by location. Dauphin Island Campground offers cabin accommodations with beach access, making it popular during warmer months. The Retreat RV & Campground on Styx River includes a cabin option with river access and separate pet beach areas, perfect for travelers with dogs who enjoy water activities.

Most rustic cabins provide beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, pillows, and sleeping bags. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between locations, with primitive cabins offering only basic fire pits while deluxe cabins include refrigerators, microwaves, and cooking utensils. Visitors staying in primitive cabins should pack food in airtight containers to prevent wildlife encounters, as one camper noted the need to "keep food in airtight plastic paint bucket containers" due to mice. Basic supplies can be purchased at camp stores in Gulf State Park and Meaher State Park, though selection is limited. For longer stays in furnished cabins, bringing additional cooking equipment and food storage containers is recommended, particularly during summer when outdoor cooking may be uncomfortable due to heat and humidity.

    Blakeley State Park Campground

Very large park, hiking, camping, battlegrounds

Blakely State Park is a very large State Park, with different choices for camping. There are larger primitive tent sites, smaller tent sites with power/water hookups, RV sites, two primitive cabins and 2 newer cabins which are very nice. There's TONS of hiking, a battleground for history buffs, a playground, a boatdock, lots of hiking, horseback riding etc.

I stayed in one of the two Squirrels Nest, which are primitive cabins. Basically open air cabins. 2 walls, a roof and 2 walls of screens. There are two wooden platforms for beds. A twin and a queen, and barstools to sit inside and look out into the woods, over the hill in which they are nestled. There's a sink (but no water) and a cabinet, and outside a large deck with bench seating. Below is a fire pit and picnic table. There is a shared porta potty outside of the two cabins. These cabins are a bit of a drive out in the woods, so make sure your vehicle is up to it. It's very peaceful out there. My cabin was inhabited by mice at night, so I kept my food in airtight plastic paint bucket containers & my belongings covered by garbage bags on one of the platforms and had my air mattress inside a pop-up mosquito tent, so the mice did not bother me. I was after all in their house. I sprinkled peppermint oil around my gear & my bed platform to keep the mice away. Next time I will have my food in a large cooler so that the wildlife is not attracted.

There are hiking trails by these sites, as well as, steps down the hill, leading off into another trail.

i would stay there again. Great place to get away.

    Meaher State Park Campground

Very close sites, on/near the Bay.

I have done tent camping at this park a couple times. All of the sites are close together and the ants are ridiculous. I had read reviews about the ants prior so I came prepared. Each site has a picnic table & fire ring. There is a boat launch, which is popular, a pier and also 2 cabins that you can rent. This is a popular park for RV's. And of course there is a shower house & covered picnic tables.

I chose a specific site with water view which was enjoyable. The street lights throughout the park are very bright, so if you're light sensitive when you sleep, use a darker tent. All the sites have power & water hookups.

    Harper - Blakeley State Park

    Beautiful Well Maintained Huge Park

April 4, 2021 Camper Van Site: Harper #7 Primitive $20 Over 2,000 acres crisscrossed with trails. Interesting replication of the ghost town of Blakeley which disappeared around 1830, but before then it rivaled Mobile in population and economy. Harper loop, where I camped, is at least a mile into the woods and has no hook ups. The sites have picnic tables and fire rings and offer decent privacy. Bath house is 7 minute walk. My shower was cold. Dumpsters near bath house. Staff house nearby. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Wish I could stay more than two nights.

    RV park closer to entrance.

    Gulf State Park Campground

    Beaches and bikes

Gulf Shores Alabama Gulf State Park Current camping spot on the canal. Ours is a nice pull thru with electric and water. Almost 500 sites here from tent to big rig friendly. Spacious sites, some with foliage, some with Lake or canal views. Grills but no fire pits. Right now there's a shortage of usable bath houses because of hurricane damage repairs in progress. Good wifi, local TV, and cell service. Close to stores and dining. Free access to adjacent pier. Great coastal access. Free use of bikes. Lots of great paved and boardwalk trails. Gators, snakes, armadillos and birds reside here.

    Lakeview RV Resort

Standard RV Parking Lot w/ [Of Course] Lake View!

Despite the appearance of an unglorified RV parking lot with basically zero privacy and not much space in between the individual RV’s, this spot is a decent stopover if you need to pull your mobile living room over for a short spell. Lakeview RV Resort has more than 100 individual parking lanes for residents and I found the community to be inviting and friendly  there’s even some social gatherings poolside (very nice feature) each night around sundown.

Of course, the gem of this place is the 16 acre lake, which I was able to get my kayak into for a few quick handful of laps early in the morning. If you’re driving an RV or hauling a camper behind your SUV, then this concrete camping parking lot just off of Highway 15 (due north of Interstate 10) near Saucier may just be the perfect spot for you. But if you’re a diehard tent camper like I am, you’ll be out of luck.

With ample slanted and elongated parking lanes for your parking pleasure, all of the sites come equipped with the typical 30 / 50 amp electrical hook-ups, waste disposal and water connections, picnic tables, garbage receptacles and even a community BBQ. Additionally, they’ve got a small boat launch, cement / asphalt pads, internet, laundr-O-mat, pavilion for large group events and propane for sale. The restrooms were pretty decent (but could use a serious power spraying).  You’ll discover that both RV’s as well as even a handful of cabins / cottages comingle here, but basically, this is a site designed for and around RV’s.

Insider’s Tip? Near this RV parking lot, you do have access to all of the nightlife and entertainment you would expect to find in nearby Biloxi, and of course, there’s the world-famous Gulf Shores beachheads that are just a short drive to. I’m a diehard foodie, so after a few days of cooking campside, I like to head into town for a nice local meal. There’s 2 great places I could recommend, right off RT. 10, due south of Lakeview RV Resort– either Puff Belly’s Brewery, Pizza& Grill(great live review here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b55Vs2hnJk4&t=7s) or Fried Green Tomato, which lives up to its reputation as the Best Fried Green Tomatoes in the South(https://www.tasteofthesouthmagazine.com/souths-best-fried-green-tomatoes/).

Overall, for the price, convenience and location, Lakeview RV Resort isn’t a bad spot for a night to take a break.

    Happy Camping!

Davis Bayou Campground — Gulf Islands National Seashore

    Quaint and Beautiful

It was great to visit this hidden gem again and I was pleasantly surprised at what great shape it was in following Hurricane Irma and other tropical storms last year. We visited in late November/early December so the bugs weren't too bad at all. We did experience an incredible line of thunderstorms but managed to get some exploring in before the weather moved in.

There are only a few sites here and they are quite small, perfect for small RVs, tents or sleeping in your car. Large oaks and other vegetation provide ample shade for the cooler fall months. Our two four legged fellas enjoyed the flat open grass/dirt area around the campsite and were able to be on their leads without wandering too far in to the thick brush on the edge of the site.

There's a small picnic table that can be moved quite easily as well as well maintained fire rings at each site. There is fresh water available and electric hookups at each site. The bathrooms are clean, as are the showers. The ranger at the entrance station was friendly and chatty. From the campground you can walk along the road (back toward the Visitor's Center) a ways and the duck into the woods or jump on the boardwalk. Keep your eyes peeled, there are some impressive alligators hanging around.

    Blakeley State Park Campground

Diverse! Great trails, walking and mountain biking, fishing! History!

Good tent and off grid camp sites. Also a few hook up sites available. Even though it’s just a few miles to grocery, restaurants, and shopping once you’re inside the park you feel like you’re in the wilderness. Very secure and good fishing, hiking, biking, and historic battlefield to explore. Super friendly and helpful staff.

Guide to Semmes

Cabin accommodations in the Semmes area provide year-round access to Alabama's Gulf Coast region, situated within 25 miles of both Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The region experiences humid subtropical conditions with mild winters averaging 50-60°F and hot summers often exceeding 90°F. Most cabin options require advance booking, particularly during winter months when snowbirds seek moderate temperatures compared to northern states.

What to do

River exploration: Access points for water activities are available at several parks near Semmes. At The Retreat RV & Campground On Styx River, visitors can enjoy "Great place for familys with little ones" with a "pet beach separate so even your dogs can enjoy the water." The camp offers tubing trips, though one visitor noted "their tubing price to go down the river and be picked up was $30 a person, which was pretty steep price to pay especially for 4 adults."

Historic sites: Civil War history can be explored extensively at Blakeley State Park Campground. "There are walking auto cell phone tours of civil war" and "You will walk through historic civil war sites, trails that were once the streets of the town of Blakeley." The 2,000-acre park includes "a beautiful hike on boardwalks along the Blakeley River then through a swamp on deep into woods amongst ancient oaks."

Beach access: Gulf Coast beaches are accessible from cabin accommodations at Dauphin Island, just 25 miles south of Semmes. "A short walk and dog friendly! Bath houses were great!" The island layout allows visitors to "ride your bicycle from one end of the island to the other. Get up early to get some great pics of the sunrise!"

What campers like

Waterfront views: At Meaher State Park Campground, cabins provide direct water access. One visitor noted, "Beautiful pines and waterfront spaces are spread apart nicely. This is really a diamond in the rough!" The park features "Two wonderful boardwalks. One to the Bayou" and many visitors appreciate that "About a quarter of the sites are right next to the water."

Privacy levels: Cabin sites at Harper - Blakeley State Park offer varying levels of seclusion. Sites are "quite spacious and only a couple (17 and 19) had mud pits. Every site is quite flat and clear and has good hammock trees. Sites 20 and up are not very private since the day use people can see right into your camp but otherwise they're quite private since the shrubs are thick."

Nature viewing: Wildlife sightings enhance the cabin experience. Visitors report "We had an armadillo visit us all 4 nights!" At Meaher State Park, some campers have surprising social interactions: "The people camping next to us caught so many fish they invited us to their BBQ and on a sunset cruise." Gulf State Park provides opportunities to "Keep your eyes peeled for wonderful birds and alligators!"

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Winter is peak season for many Gulf Coast cabin rentals. At Davis Bayou Campground, "This is a popular park during the winter months as it is a National Park. Reserve early." Some sites like Gulf State Park require booking 6-12 months in advance for winter stays.

Insect preparation: Ants can be problematic at certain cabin sites. At Meaher State Park, "All of the sites are close together and the ants are ridiculous. I had read reviews about the ants prior so I came prepared." Similar issues exist at Gulf State Park where "The whole campground is infested with stinging ants. There are ant piles all over the campsites."

Noise factors: Some cabin areas experience transportation noise. Davis Bayou Campground has "a railroad nearby and it is quite loud in the evening." At Meaher State Park, "The park is between two highways, but we didn't notice the noise." One visitor noted some sites at Blakeley State Park can have noise from "day use people."

Tips for camping with families

Water recreation options: Multiple cabin locations offer kid-friendly water access. The Retreat on Styx River provides dedicated areas where "They have a pet beach separate so even your dogs can enjoy the water" and features "bouncy houses and playgrounds for the kids." Many families appreciate that "a food truck on Saturday for lunch was a nice surprise" at Blakeley State Park.

Educational opportunities: Gulf State Park Campground offers learning activities near cabin accommodations. "You can also join in for one of the rangers led educational walks to see wildlife around the park" and visitors should "plan to spend time on the water" for optimal experiences. Blakeley State Park provides junior ranger programs where families can "begin the junior ranger packet for our kiddos (provided at checkout)."

Cabin selection for families: Choose cabin locations based on proximity to amenities. At Gulf State Park, "There are two major campground areas in the park" with yurts that "each have 4 cots and a fire pit." For families with pets, most parks accommodate animals but The Retreat RV & Campground specifically offers "a pet beach separate so even your dogs can enjoy the water."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Cabin and RV sites vary significantly in quality and accessibility. At The Retreat RV & Campground, "The RV sites are not on any type of paved or level ground and are not suitable for larger RVs. They're VERY close together and there are a lot of trees." Similarly, at Blakeley State Park, "Some of the sites are so unlevel" requiring preparation with leveling blocks.

Off-season advantages: Winter cabin stays provide unique benefits. Dauphin Island offers "low rates for such a beautiful spot" during off-peak times. At Meaher State Park, winter visitors note it's "a good location for events in Mobile and Baldwin counties" with "Great local restaurants with seafood in nearby Spanish Fort and Fairhope. Shopping and grocery stores within 5 miles as well."
