Lake Neely Henry spans 11,200 acres near Ragland, providing shoreline access for many area campgrounds. The eastern Alabama region experiences hot summers with temperatures regularly reaching 90°F and mild winters with occasional freezing temperatures. Camping options range from full-hookup RV sites to primitive tent areas, with many facilities open year-round.
What to do
Hiking trails: Cheaha State Park offers several well-marked trails suitable for different skill levels. "We are local to Cheaha and go often, year round. The kids love the lake and the pool, and there is an easy walk on a boardwalk with amazing views at the end on days when the kids don't feel like hiking. Right by the lake is a trailhead that leads up to more amazing views," notes Bethany M.
Fishing opportunities: Safe Harbor RV Park provides direct access to the Coosa River. "This is a classic RV campground that is along the Coosa River and provides easy access for launching a boat. Although they don't allow tent camping they have nice amenities for those traveling in an RV or other campervan," explains Asher K.
Kayaking: Choccolocco Creek Campground offers creek access perfect for paddlers. One camper reported: "Walked down to the Beautiful Creek Lot and Kayaked for a while in the Creek. Had a Great time - Love the Shower house made from a Old Feed Bin."
Swimming: Multiple campgrounds offer swimming options during warm months. At River Rocks Landing, campers enjoy "3 pools that r very nice and clean. One pool is an infinity pool!"
What campers like
Pet-friendly facilities: Most campgrounds near Ragland welcome pets with designated exercise areas. At GrandStand RV Park, "Double dog park open all hours and free treats available too!" This makes it one of the most accommodating dog friendly campgrounds near Ragland.
Peaceful water views: Many sites offer waterfront camping. "Located in Ashville, Al, Greensport is a jewel of a place to get away and enjoy the beauty of Alabama. It sits on Lake Neely Henry and spreads across many acres," shares JR Z.
Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain high standards for comfort. At Cheaha State Park, campers appreciate the "clean bathrooms (showers, toilets, water), wonderful hiking trails, RV and tent sites, nice park store, excellent park hotel, beautiful views."
Privacy options: While some campgrounds have tighter spacing, others offer more secluded sites. At Choccolocco Creek Campground, visitors note "A few RV sites, tent sites and all setup with privacy. Lots of land to explore and run around."
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Summer heat requires planning for shade and hydration. "Some sites have rock beds, some have grass beds (but there are hidden big rocks in the grass making it hard to find a good smooth spot)," warns a Cheaha State Park camper about tent placement.
Site spacing variations: Many campgrounds have mixed reviews about proximity to neighbors. At Noccalula Falls Park & Campground, "Sites~ most are SMALL and right next to your neighbor. Some have more space but all in all its tight. Driving into the campground and finding your site is TIGHT as well."
Water quality: Not all campgrounds use municipal water. At Pineview RV Park, campers note "Water is spring fed, not city."
Connectivity: Cell service and WiFi vary by location. At Greensport RV Park and Campground, "if you are out after 9pm the gate will be closed. Make sure you check your email or text messages as the gate is opened with a QR code that is sent to you."
Tips for camping with families
Swimming options: Choose campgrounds with water activities for children. At Cheaha State Park, "The kids love the lake and the pool, and there is an easy walk on a boardwalk with amazing views at the end on days when the kids don't feel like hiking."
Educational activities: Some campgrounds offer unique learning experiences. "Right across from the store they have a gem mining area that is also great fun for the children," reports a Cheaha State Park visitor.
Playground access: Several campgrounds include play equipment. Time Away RV Resort "has a playground and several covered areas for picnics and group gatherings. A key bonus to this site is the pool which is very necessary when camping in Alabama in the summer."
Wildlife awareness: Keep children supervised due to local wildlife. At Cheaha State Park, "There is an old crashed airplane up there, off a trail. Google before you go and see if you can find directions!"
Tips from RVers
Power considerations: Check electrical service details before booking. At Pineview RV Park, "50amp, power pole is hot, no breaker."
Maneuverability: Some campgrounds have tight access roads. At Safe Harbor RV Park, "Spaces are long and level. No extras, no picnic tables, no shower houses, however everyone was friendly, and we had no issues with the water/sewer/electric."
Security features: Many campgrounds offer enhanced security measures. At Greensport RV Park, one camper advises, "Make sure you check your email or text messages as the gate is opened with a QR code that is sent to you. This is not explained very well in the welcoming documents or on the camp grounds App."
Extended stays: Several pet friendly campgrounds around Ragland accommodate longer visits. At Pineview RV & Park, "Nice spot to spend a few days while doing repairs. 9 on air channels. Wifi doesn't reach to our spot, but ATT & Verizon good enough to hotspot."
