    Blakeley State Park Campground

Very large park, hiking, camping, battlegrounds

Blakely State Park is a very large State Park, with different choices for camping. There are larger primitive tent sites, smaller tent sites with power/water hookups, RV sites, two primitive cabins and 2 newer cabins which are very nice. There's TONS of hiking, a battleground for history buffs, a playground, a boatdock, lots of hiking, horseback riding etc.

I stayed in one of the two Squirrels Nest, which are primitive cabins. Basically open air cabins. 2 walls, a roof and 2 walls of screens. There are two wooden platforms for beds. A twin and a queen, and barstools to sit inside and look out into the woods, over the hill in which they are nestled. There's a sink (but no water) and a cabinet, and outside a large deck with bench seating. Below is a fire pit and picnic table. There is a shared porta potty outside of the two cabins. These cabins are a bit of a drive out in the woods, so make sure your vehicle is up to it. It's very peaceful out there. My cabin was inhabited by mice at night, so I kept my food in airtight plastic paint bucket containers & my belongings covered by garbage bags on one of the platforms and had my air mattress inside a pop-up mosquito tent, so the mice did not bother me. I was after all in their house. I sprinkled peppermint oil around my gear & my bed platform to keep the mice away. Next time I will have my food in a large cooler so that the wildlife is not attracted.

There are hiking trails by these sites, as well as, steps down the hill, leading off into another trail.

i would stay there again. Great place to get away.

    Navarre Beach Camping Resort

    Southern Hospitality at its Best!

Staff: once again the entire staff is a living definition of southern hospitality. The moment you step on the property you are greeted with staff that actually want to be there, everyone from office, store, clubhouse and maintenance. They do an amazing job at setting a welcoming and accommodating atmosphere for all patrons. 5 STARS! Accommodations: Grounds: well maintained and clean; Pool Area: Clean and pool is HEATED. Cabins: clean and have a pinterest beach vibe! Pet Area: clean, double gated, lighted with bench poo bags supplied! Pet friendly. Pier and beach area very clean with swings and super comfortable lounge chairs to soak up all the sun and breeze. Pier is great for fishing and benches along the pier provide a great way to view sunrise and sunset. Club house: during our stay they hosted an amazing THANKSGIVING dinner and a paint night; also features a large screen tv and seating areas for those occasional rainy days. On the weekends they have breakfast on the grill, best breakfast I've had in a long time(shout out to the cook and staff:) Playground area is lighted with a box of sand toys and various other toys to keep the kidos busy. Atmosphere: There is NO OTHER campground in the area that beats the atmosphere at this campground. The staff and the care they take to make sure everyone's experience is the best is hands down the best in this area. I honestly can't think of one thing that would have made our stay more enjoyable. This is the second time I've stayed here.

    Awesome bike trails and boardwalks

They have biking trails throughout the park - and boardwalks to go over to the beach! If you aren’t camping you can pay to just bike! There is a pool, tennis courts, laundry facilities & boat ramps! They have information sessions about local animals in the park as well. Campground is spacious - bring your own fire pit there is a grill available but that’s all. Bathhouses are so clean! Best way to stay in the orange beach area!

    Gulf State Park Campground

Campers with way too much stuff

If it didn’t have the Gulf weather and bugs and or for that matter, the campers, this would be a five star campground. I sit here writing this review at the pool. I opened my book to read and the lady next to me brought out her Bluetooth speaker to blast music. Last night, a family chowed down on a can of pringles in the pool. Trash everywhere at the fishing docks. My husband went to put our wash in the dryer last night and dryers were filled with abandoned clothing. People have bicycles with horns.

We did make the mistake of coming here during one of the busiest weeks of July, but that doesn’t mean that every campsite should be littered with crazy amounts of gear, despite it being so obviously oppressively hot and muggy that much of it seems unusable. I want to reiterate: the weather is vile but I still can’t imagine bringing fans to plug in OUTSIDE of my camper. The campers next to us have a large trailer, camper bus, a large truck and a golf cart. In one spot. That doesn’t include the bikes, the chairs, the tents, etc.

The actual campsites and facilities are nice. Individual campsites are spacious and level and come with a grill and picnic table. Some site locations are much better situated than others (I would never want to camp along Campground Road - it’s insanely busy with cars and bicycles). It’s great to have a large pool w backside, clean and fairly large laundry facilities, a camp store and an exceptional network of bike trails. There is also a very awesome nature center, several playgrounds, pickleball courts, a boat ramp, and free bicycle rentals! There is ten bathhouses and while only three bathroom and shower stalls each seemed insufficient to me there wasn’t anyone in the bathhouses any time I utilized them. They were super clean and in reasonable proximity to all of the sites in the loop.

The campground, which is massive (500 plus sites) consists of several loops, and is smack dab in the middle of the State Park. Campers get free parking at several beaches in the Park, which we utilized (beach was pretty quiet in the morning). I thought that was a great perk. We didn’t get to bike much between the heat and rain but the trail system looks amazing and there were plenty of staged opportunities for both free and paid bike rentals.

The campground is located right smack dab in between Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, which is ideal if you want to go play some miniature golf or grab a bite to eat.

I think coming off season is probably the best bet - we honestly didn’t even feel like we were in nature when we came and it was so darn humid I didn’t really want to nature anyway! I think the campground would benefit from allowing less vehicles at each spot - from my vantage point, I’m literally staring out at nine trucks for maybe three campers.

    Beach front

This beach front campground is beautiful, quiet, and relaxing. Under new ownership they seem friendly and helpful. Dog friendly park that is away from the major city hubs, nothing but the beach is walkable. Our site was level with a grill, fire pit, picnic table and a wooden deck.

    Milton-Gulf Pines KOA

    Nice KOA Near Beaches

Nice campground, gravel site with small pad with picnic table and fire ring. FHU, and plenty of activities and amenities for our granddaughter. Playground, mini golf, large outdoor Connect Four game. Nice dog park, camp store and pool, but too cold to swim. Didn’t use facilities, but looked clean. Tents and cabins in backside of the park. I would reserve there if possible some interstate noise upfront. Staff friendly and took us to our site. Love the bike trails nearby.

    Meaher State Park Campground

Very close sites, on/near the Bay.

I have done tent camping at this park a couple times. All of the sites are close together and the ants are ridiculous. I had read reviews about the ants prior so I came prepared. Each site has a picnic table & fire ring. There is a boat launch, which is popular, a pier and also 2 cabins that you can rent. This is a popular park for RV's. And of course there is a shower house & covered picnic tables.

I chose a specific site with water view which was enjoyable. The street lights throughout the park are very bright, so if you're light sensitive when you sleep, use a darker tent. All the sites have power & water hookups.

    Mystic Springs Recreation Area

    Remote Primitive and Wild

Pros: Covered tent sites (we tent camped) portapottys, free for up to a week, boat launch, spaced out sites (pretty private). Has picnic tables, fire pits, and grills. Cons: Sites flood, lots of gaters (if you have small pets this is sketchy), gets a little busy on the weekends with the boaters, it's reaallllly far from the next town but there's a gas station 15mins away. Get gas before you go back to camp. It's beautiful and clean. About 45mins to pcola

    Mystic Springs Recreation Area

Primitive site with fire ring, grill, trash can, , large portapotty and nice water view.

I’ve camped at Mystic Springs numerous times. I book the group site. Very large & spacious. Perfect for a large group or multiple people. Plenty of room for several tents. It has a fire ring, grill, covered structure with 2 picnic tables, a garbage can and a large portapotty. It’s generally very quiet. It’s a gated site so to me it feels more secure. People do walk through the site occasionally but not too often. It’s primitive camping so no power & no potable water. Most sites have water view.

Guide to Orange Beach

Cabins near Orange Beach, Alabama offer beach proximity while maintaining the rustic camping experience. Located on Alabama's Gulf Coast where average summer temperatures reach 90°F with high humidity, cabin accommodations provide cooling shelter during intense summer heat. Most cabin rentals in this region sit within 10 miles of white sand beaches, making them convenient bases for coastal activities.

What to do

Beach exploration: Fort Pickens Campground provides cabin visitors easy access to pristine Gulf beaches. "The beach and water were just beautiful," notes one camper. "We were less than a 10 minute walk from the beach and walked about 30 minutes to the old fort."

Wildlife watching: Blue Angel Park offers excellent opportunities to observe coastal wildlife. "There is a lot of wildlife...deer and we heard a coyote howl at night," reports a visitor. The park's natural setting provides habitat for various animal species typical of Gulf Coast ecosystems.

Historical sites: Explore military history near cabin accommodations. "The park has a nice museum that describes the history of the fort and impacts of hurricanes," explains a Fort Pickens visitor. "Many parts of the fort and old batteries are open and available for exploring. Climbing on top of some of these areas offers spectacular views of the bay and gulf."

Water activities: Beyond swimming, cabins provide access to various water sports. "We did some paddle-boarding and walked trails," shares a Blue Angel Park guest. Kayak rentals are also available at several locations, allowing visitors to explore protected waterways.

What campers like

Fishing opportunities: Many cabin locations offer fishing access directly on property. At Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort, "the lake is full of bream and each of my kids caught their first fish, definitely a memorable trip," reports one family. Fishing piers and stocked ponds provide convenient options for anglers.

Clean facilities: Cabin guests consistently mention cleanliness as a priority. "Bathrooms were updated and clean," notes a Gulf State Park visitor. Another camper at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park adds, "It was very clean and the staff were extremely friendly."

Family programming: Gulf State Park Campground offers structured activities beyond basic amenities. "This is a great park with lots of amenities including Pickle Ball, Pool, Restaurant, Trails, etc.," explains a visitor. Another camper adds, "Kids love the splash pad. Big sites, food trucks, site store, boat ramps, nice pool."

Location convenience: Many cabins sit within short driving distance to attractions. "The location is ideal to do all the Gulf Shores must-do's," reports a Gulf Shores RV Resort guest. Another visitor notes their cabin was "not far from the pool and the beach."

What you should know

Reservation timing: During peak season, securing cabin accommodations requires advance planning. "This is a very popular park due to beaches and the actual old fort Pickens buildings," explains a visitor. "Reservations can be made online and should be made early if you plan on coming during the busy spring and summer seasons."

Insect awareness: Cabin visitors should prepare for insects typical to Gulf Coast environments. "Beware of the ants! The whole campground is infested with stinging ants. There are ant piles all over the campsites," warns one Gulf State Park visitor. "I was stung really bad after accidentally getting near an ant hill."

Beach distance: Pirates Cove RrrrV Park and similar campgrounds may require transportation to reach beaches. "Wish it had more trees and places to ride bikes, but works great for kids," notes a recent guest. Many cabin facilities are located several miles inland from actual beaches.

Noise levels: Some cabin locations experience noise from neighboring campsites or roads. "Our corner campsite was close to two intersecting roads, and occasionally a loud vehicle will pass by," explains a Pirates Cove guest. "It might bother someone else who is looking for complete silence."

Tips for camping with families

Activity scheduling: Plan for organized events at family-oriented cabin locations. At Gulf Shores RV Resort, "The campground has plenty to keep the family busy from the pool to poker night. They have activities daily all week long and step it up for the weekend." These structured activities help entertain children during longer stays.

Water features: Pools provide alternative swimming options when beach conditions aren't ideal. "The pool is large and warm, my kids loved that," reports a Gulf Shores RV Resort visitor. "Fishing was fun even though they didn't catch a single fish."

Space considerations: Family cabin selections should prioritize adequate outdoor space. "The sites are a combination of dirt and grass. Ours is level enough, no problems there," explains a visitor staying at Gulf Shores-Pensacola West KOA. Sites with concrete pads provide cleaner play areas for children.

Pet policies: Many cabin locations welcome family pets but have specific rules. "The dog park consists of two fenced in areas which was nice because my dog gets bored quickly of the same area, so I alternated between the two," notes a KOA visitor. Check individual property policies regarding pet restrictions.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Bella Terra of Gulf Shores offers premium cabin accommodations with specific benefits. "Our site had nice separation from our neighbors with a big grassy area and a hedge between us. Some more expensive sites have cabanas, outdoor kitchens, and overlook the lakes," explains one visitor. Requesting specific site locations can significantly improve your experience.

Utilities management: Cabin renters should verify included utilities before arrival. "We had full hookups, wifi, activity center with pool, tennis courts, horseshoes and volleyball," mentions a visitor at Gulf State Park. Another notes, "The wifi was good the whole time even with a full park."

Navigation challenges: Some cabin locations require careful planning for arrival. "To get to Oak Grove use the West Gate via Blue Angel PKWY. If you come in the main gate, and don't thoroughly know your way through the base, you can easily end up at the old Seabees gate area where there are blockade weaves that are not RV friendly," advises a Military Park visitor.

Weather preparation: Cabin facilities provide better protection from Gulf Coast weather events. "We were escaping Nicole and after 9 hours on the road we were trying to find a place in Gulf Shores," recalls a visitor who found shelter at Gulf Shores RV Resort during a storm. Having indoor accommodations proves valuable during frequent summer thunderstorms.
