Blakeley State Park offers extensive equestrian facilities with over 26 miles of horse-friendly trails traversing 2,000 acres of diverse terrain. The trail system accommodates riders of all skill levels with mostly flat surfaces that range from easy to moderate difficulty. These multi-use trails wind through historic Civil War sites, ancient oak forests, and scenic boardwalks along waterways.
What to do
Explore Civil War history: Blakeley State Park Campground features self-guided walking and auto phone tours of Civil War sites. "2000 acres. Walking auto cell phone tours of civil war. Boat tours. Big pull through rv spots and a tent campground," notes Kevin L.
Trail riding: The park maintains extensive trail networks suitable for equestrian use. The multi-use trails can be enjoyed by riders, hikers and cyclists alike. Riders can access trails directly from campsites or designated parking areas. "You will walk through historic civil war sites, trails that were once the streets of the town of Blakeley. A beautiful hike on boardwalks along the Blakeley River then through a swamp deep into woods amongst ancient oaks," explains Julie D.
Water activities: Take advantage of the boat launch for personal watercraft or join organized boat tours along the Delta. "Amazing cruises along the Delta with lots of wildlife viewing and history!! They have sunset cruises, seafood cruises, and seasonal themed cruises," shares a visitor.
What campers like
Spacious, secluded sites: Campers consistently mention the generous spacing between sites at Apalachee RV Campground. "It is very close to Mobile, but also very secluded. There is alot of space between sites and lots to see and do within the campground also," reports Alana R.
Wildlife encounters: The natural setting attracts various wildlife species that visitors can observe. "Lots of wildlife including deer that come very close," mentions John W. Many equestrian campers appreciate being able to observe wildlife while on trail rides throughout the park.
Serene atmosphere: The peaceful environment provides a welcome break from urban noise. "Two nights under stars and immaculate quiet. To the point where we couldn't help but laugh (quietly) when our fire cracked loudly a couple times," describes Nicole G. Horse owners particularly value the calm setting for their animals.
What you should know
Site leveling challenges: Some RV sites require additional effort to level. "Some of the sites are so unlevel. But the historical tour of the park is amazing. So much information about the civil war. Other than the rv sites being so unlevel the park is really nice," explains Michael at Blakeley State Park Campground.
Bathroom facilities: Restroom amenities vary throughout the park. "Bathrooms were fine, no sinks but sanitizer and again water at our site," notes Nicole G. Horse campers should plan accordingly for both human and equine needs.
Seasonal conditions: Bug activity increases during warmer months but may be less problematic than expected. "Bugs are not nearly as bad as I expected," reports John W. Equestrian visitors should consider seasonality when planning trips.
Tips for camping with families
Junior Ranger program: Apalachee RV Campground offers educational activities for children. "Woke up to begin the junior ranger packet for our kiddos (provided at checkout) and hiked and explored all day," shares Nicole G.
Bike-friendly paths: The road system within the park provides safe cycling opportunities for children. "Bring your bikes, lots of roads to explore with little traffic," advises DALLEEN. Families with both horses and children can alternate between riding activities.
Multiple accommodation options: The park offers various camping styles to suit family needs. "They have simple campsites to full RV campsites, all have a fire ring and similar atmosphere. There are a few different campgrounds, one is tent only. They also have relatively new camping shelters that get you out of the bugs," describes a visitor.
Tips from RVers
Pull-through accessibility: Anchors Aweigh RV Resort offers convenient access for large rigs. "Small friendly very clean park. All paved and pets welcome," states John G.
Hookup availability: Full-service sites are available for extended stays. "Super friendly staff and the spots, wowza, they are huge and all pull through. Oh, and all sites also have sewer!" notes DALLEEN. RVers with horse trailers appreciate the ample space for both recreational vehicles and equestrian equipment.
Weekend amenities: Additional services may be available on weekends. "We were super happy at the food truck that was there so we didn't have to go off site for lunch. (Probably just a weekend thing?)" mentions Nicole G. This can be particularly convenient for horse owners who prefer not to leave their animals unattended while getting food.
