Hoover Met Complex RV Park features pull-through concrete pads with 50-amp electric service, water, and sewer connections in a stadium parking lot setting. Sites are arranged in an open configuration with minimal spacing between rigs. "Very easy to find and super easy to park. Very clean and easy hookups. All lots are pull through and asphalt," noted one visitor about the Hoover facility. Birmingham South provides amenities including showers, toilets, a swimming pool, and a game room, making it suitable for extended stays. According to one camper, "Very clean restrooms, showers, nice pool, game room & playground. Just off I-65. Staff are very welcoming & accommodating!" Most parks in the region permit pets with standard leash restrictions. Dump stations are available at Hoover Met Complex and Birmingham South, with trash collection provided throughout the parks. Bama RV Station

    Good For Quick Overnight Stay

Literally right off the interstate at Tuscaloosa. Much lower noise level than I expected. Definitely a parking lot, without trees. We are in site 9, pretty level gravel site, electric and water hookup only. 2 dump stations are available, 2 dog parks. 30 dollars a night. Mostly long term parking. No firepits or picnic tables. Check in by phone, no office.

    Deerlick Creek

    Awesome little campground

Nice level concrete pads with awesome shade. Bath house stayed clean. Nice 1/2 mile asphalt bike/walking trail. Hiking trail with hills and valleys skirting the lake. Boat ramp with easy access to the lake. Convenient access to Tuscaloosa for supplies, eating or just a change of scenery. Some site are smaller than others and some are pull through. Highly recommend.

    Gunter Hill Campground

    Great Times

    Great time at Gunter Hill

Gunter Hill Corps of Engineers Campground We stayed 2 nights at Site 27 Full hookups (50 amp electric/water/sewer) $35/night Site #27. is a very long, back-in site, on a level concrete pad, very shady and secluded. The driveway is very long. The Catoma Creek is visible and a short walk just to the rear of this site, affording me quick and easy access to get to a bit of fishing.

The campground is just on the west side of Montgomery, a short drive off of the interstate, far enough away to offer plenty of peace and quiet. We enjoyed lots of walks around the park, getting familiar with the campground while exploring the Catoma loop and the more rustic, electric-only Antioc loop. We were able to put our kayaks in easily as well. The restrooms were slightly dated and dark. No trash pick up, but cans available nearby.

The campground served as a good base to explore nearby Montgomery and it’s suburbs.

Lakeside Landing RV Park & Marina

    One and done

The view is fantastic if you are lakeside- but it stops there. Most rentals are along one row and a couple of the lakeside sites. Sites are very unleveled with minimal gravel but almost all have a 6x9 concrete pad. No pool, no fire rings, spotty wifi and frequent brown outs on power. Both shower points smell horrible but appear clean otherwise. Lots of long-term vehicles. People are friendly and pets are welcome.

    Gunter Hill Campground

    We love Gunter Hill!

We are local (30ish miles) but love to just escape here when we have 3 or 4 days and don't want to travel long distance.  Perfect spot to be closer to the river in the summer and in the woods in the fall.  Catoma loop sites are full hookup with concrete pads including both back in and pull through options.  Antioch Loop does not have sewer hookup and these sites are gravel lots but offer some amazing water views.

    Cherokee Campground

More of a Long Term Living Area

Most of the pads were filled with long-term residents. The owners were very nice. The rate was reasonable. Our gravel pad was not wide enough to be a) level and b) slide/awning out at the same time. The electric hook-up was at the opposite end of the pad from the water and sewer hook-ups. Some neighbors were friendly, others were a bit suspicious of us as interlopers based on how many times they walked past our area. Overall, would only stay again in a pinch.

    Clear Creek Cove RV Resort

Long term camping with a family atmosphere

This is a great campground that has ONLY long term camping so you really get to know your neighbors. The power is not included but the prices are very reasonable.

Our lot is spacious, gravel pad with a cement patio.

Guide to Mccalla

McCalla, Alabama sits approximately 20 miles southwest of Birmingham at an elevation of around 600 feet above sea level. The area features rolling hills with a mix of woodland and open spaces, creating diverse camping environments. RV parks in the McCalla vicinity typically remain open year-round with temperatures ranging from 30°F in winter to 90°F in summer, making spring and fall the most comfortable camping seasons.

What to do

Explore Oak Mountain State Park: Located approximately 18 miles from McCalla, this park offers hiking trails, fishing spots, and mountain biking opportunities. "We used this campground as a stopover on our way to the beach. They put us in a pull though site which was awesome for being easy to make quiet exit. Campground is close to the grocery store for the last few items before heading south," notes a visitor to Birmingham South RV Park.

Visit the Hoover Met Complex: Beyond RV camping, the complex features recreational facilities including a playground and rock climbing area. "Super easy to get in and out. Easy hooks ups and good WiFi available. Playground and rock climbing area a plus," shares a guest at Hoover Met Complex RV Park.

Water activities at Smith Lake: About an hour's drive from McCalla, Smith Lake provides swimming, boating, and fishing options. A camper at Thousand Trails Hidden Cove mentions, "This RV park is right on a lake, but a bit away from anything else. If you have any sort of boat, kayak, paddle board, bring it! There is hiking about an hour away at the Bankhead National Forest."

What campers like

Level parking spots: Many McCalla area campgrounds feature concrete or asphalt pads that require minimal leveling. "We had a pull through spot so we didn't have to disconnect our tow dolly. Gravel site was fairly level despite being in a hilly area," reports a camper at Rolling Hills RV Park.

Convenient interstate access: Most RV parks near McCalla provide easy highway access for travelers passing through. "Very easy to find and super easy to park. Great staff. Excellent wifi. Easy pull through, paved lot. Close access to anything you need," notes a visitor describing their experience at Hoover Met Complex RV Park.

Dog-friendly facilities: Several area campgrounds accommodate pets with designated walking areas. At Bama RV Station, a visitor reports, "Quiet campground with 3 dog parks level lots. Numerous sewer as well as non sewer lots. Economy camping option in the economy storage area."

What you should know

Varying site quality: Some campgrounds have uneven concrete pads or limited amenities. "The pads are very uneven and there are just not many amenities. Very close to sports fields though," notes one camper about Hoover Met Complex RV Park.

Highway noise considerations: Several campgrounds sit close to major highways, which creates convenience but potential noise. "It is right off I-65 so there was lots of road noise all night. There was a very bright vapor light above our site that lit up the whole area," reports a visitor to Sunset RV.

Limited natural settings: Many RV parks near McCalla function primarily as parking areas with hookups rather than natural camping experiences. "Definitely just a no frills parking lot with full hookups. No trees, no playground, no pool, no picnic table, no fire ring," explains a camper describing their Sunset RV experience.

Seasonal demand fluctuations: Football games and spring events increase occupancy at area campgrounds. "We arrived around 3:30 and before arriving saw a email update to our previous reservation. There was a possibility of change. Hurricane Ian sent a multitude of people fleeing from Florida that were now headed to the Hoover Met RV. I called and verified that we still had site reservation for one night. But now the RV park was completely full."

Tips for camping with families

Look for campgrounds with play areas: Some RV parks offer playground equipment for children. "This is about the only place in the Birmingham area to stay in an R.V. It is essentially a large parking lot with RV pull through spaces. We use it when we go to Birmingham to visit the family. It does have a nice kids playground and you can use the facilities inside the stadium as well as the restroom at the playground."

Consider swimming options: During summer months, pools provide recreation for children. At Birmingham South RV Park, facilities include "showers, toilets, a swimming pool, and a game room," making it suitable for extended family stays.

Pack entertainment for parking lot sites: Many RV parks near McCalla lack natural play spaces. "No pool, no fire rings, spotty wifi and frequent brown outs on power. Both shower points smell horrible but appear clean otherwise. Lots of long-term vehicles. People are friendly and pets are welcome," shares a visitor about their experience at Lakeside Landing.

Tips from RVers

Confirm hookup specifications: Most McCalla area RV parks offer full hookups but amperage varies. "Pads are hard surfaced and spaced far apart. Grounds well kept and full hookups available. Walking distance to casino and they offer a shuttle," reports a visitor about Wind Creek Atmore Casino RV Park.

Book early for events: Sports tournaments and regional events fill campgrounds quickly. "Park has only 1 Bath/shower on the office side and no Bath house on the larger site side. FHU sites are more than acceptable," notes a camper about facility limitations.

Consider extending your stay: Some RV parks offer better weekly rates for longer visits. "This wasn't our first visit to Birmingham South RV Park in Pelham, AL but it will almost assuredly be our last! I wish I could give this visit ZERO stars. On a previous visit, the campsite host/manager knocked on our door and asked our son to move his car, despite the fact his car was properly parked on our site and not obstructing the lane."
