Topsail Hill Preserve State Park Campground

    One of the best.

Great campground with full hookups! Longer hike to the beach than Henderson State Park but everyone seemed to have adapted with beach cart trailers behind their bikes. Beach tram runs when not on COVID shut down. Some sites are close together but the south loop sites had more privacy. Great biking in the park and along 30A. Also has many nice cabin rentals. Beach is absolutely beautiful!

    Southern Hospitality at its Best!

Staff: once again the entire staff is a living definition of southern hospitality. The moment you step on the property you are greeted with staff that actually want to be there, everyone from office, store, clubhouse and maintenance. They do an amazing job at setting a welcoming and accommodating atmosphere for all patrons. 5 STARS! Accommodations: Grounds: well maintained and clean; Pool Area: Clean and pool is HEATED. Cabins: clean and have a pinterest beach vibe! Pet Area: clean, double gated, lighted with bench poo bags supplied! Pet friendly. Pier and beach area very clean with swings and super comfortable lounge chairs to soak up all the sun and breeze. Pier is great for fishing and benches along the pier provide a great way to view sunrise and sunset. Club house: during our stay they hosted an amazing THANKSGIVING dinner and a paint night; also features a large screen tv and seating areas for those occasional rainy days. On the weekends they have breakfast on the grill, best breakfast I've had in a long time(shout out to the cook and staff:) Playground area is lighted with a box of sand toys and various other toys to keep the kidos busy. Atmosphere: There is NO OTHER campground in the area that beats the atmosphere at this campground. The staff and the care they take to make sure everyone's experience is the best is hands down the best in this area. I honestly can't think of one thing that would have made our stay more enjoyable. This is the second time I've stayed here.

    Henderson Beach State Park Campground

Quiet and secluded for the beach

My family and I stayed here for one night in July 2020 as our midway point from GA to Texas. We stayed in site 44 and it was private and near the bathrooms. All the sites had gravel, a picnic table, and and a fire pit as well as a clothesline. There’s a path to the beach from the bathhouse. The bathhouse was very clean and there were men and women restrooms as well as private bathroom/showers.

We fit 2 tents at our site. It was so humid and muggy I cowboy camped on the gravel with my picnic blanket and sleeping pad. Everyone else slept in the tents without the rain fly’s for some ventilation. It was a nice, clean, and quiet park and we felt very secluded in our site. There was WiFi and cell service (2 bars for Verizon).

Each site has electric and water. There’s a dump station near the entrance/exit of the park. Overall, lovely experience and I would definitely stay here again.

    Milton-Gulf Pines KOA

    Nice KOA Near Beaches

Nice campground, gravel site with small pad with picnic table and fire ring. FHU, and plenty of activities and amenities for our granddaughter. Playground, mini golf, large outdoor Connect Four game. Nice dog park, camp store and pool, but too cold to swim. Didn’t use facilities, but looked clean. Tents and cabins in backside of the park. I would reserve there if possible some interstate noise upfront. Staff friendly and took us to our site. Love the bike trails nearby.

Topsail Hill Preserve State Park Campground

Ranger Review: High Hopes Hammock at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park

    Campground Review:

If you are ever in the Florida Panhandle, you have to stop at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park. I have been coming here for years as a visitor and the past four volunteering in the campground because I love it so much. The campground used to be a private RV park so there are lots of amenities with really nice campsites but once you leave the campground there are over 1,600 acres to explore and 3.2 miles of pristine white sandy beaches to walk on. The park is divided into three sections: the RV park, a 22-site tent-only section, and 32 one and two-bedroom bungalows and cabins for rent.

There are 156 RV sites that are level and a mix of paved and crushed gravel with full hook-up and cable television (75+ channels). Park roads are paved and easy to navigate in any size RV. There are plenty of tall trees for shade and bushes that provide privacy. There are no fire pits but you are allowed to have a fire if you bring your own pit. The fair majority of sites are back-in but there are a handful of pull-thru sites and all are level. The water sewer and electric hook-ups are all well-placed at the site and there is a light at the end of each driveway. There are 22 tent sites with an elevated gravel tent pad, fire ring, water spigot, and 110 electric hook-ups. Most of the tents are set under tall pine trees while a few are more in the open and are sunny. A concessionaire offers “glamping tents” with beds, lamps, carpet, chairs and outdoor furniture. There are also one and two-bedroom cabins that can be rented year-round.

Within the park is a free wifi hotspot, a non-heated swimming pool, beach access with tram service, club house, camp store, bike/kayak/canoe rental, laundry, amphitheater, shuffle board, and a host of park activities and ranger-led tours. The restroom and laundry facilities (which are only $1.50 per wash/dry) are clean and seemed adequate to handle the crowds. The campground is located ¾ mile from the beach which is accessible via a walking/biking trail or a tram operated by the park. During the winter months the tram runs every two hours, but during peak season it runs once an hour. Once you are on the beach you have miles and miles of unspoiled white sand and blue water to enjoy. There are also numerous ponds and coastal dune lakes scattered throughout the campground for the fishing enthusiasts. The coastal dune lakes are a globally rare ecosystem occurring in only a handful of places around the world and definitely worth exploring (which you can do with watercraft rental).

Nearby are thousands of acres managed by the state forestry department which have miles and miles of hiking trails. The park is located within a mile of a Walmart (with food), gas station, Subway and other restaurants. Within 5 miles are tons of shopping opportunities, movie theater, restaurants, grocery, etc.

What we really liked about this campground are the level, paved, full-hookup sites and the fact that it is in a state park so you have access to miles of hiking/biking and a gorgeous beach. The beach here is the most beautiful in Florida and can be completely empty in the winter. The not-so-good things about this park are the cost and how crowded it can be in the peak season. During peak season this park is very busy and you have to book very early. The cost is $42/night (unless you are a Florida senior resident and then it is half price) which is high for state parks . . . but compared to other private parks in the area that is reasonable.

    Product Review:

As a Ranger for TheDyrt I occasionally get outdoor products to test and on this trip I was able to test a High Hopes Hammock. I was pretty excited to receive a hammock because I am one of the few people I know that does not own a hammock putting me a little behind the times. One cool feature of this company is that for every hammock purchased, they donate either a hammock, various survival supplies or money to organizations helping the homeless, impoverished countries or those affected by natural disasters.

High Hopes offers many different colors of hammocks many of which are bright and fun and the large selection made it hard for me to choose because I like so many of them. The hammock is lightweight at just 1 ½ pounds and tucks nicely into a pouch attached to the side of the hammock. The hammock fit perfectly into my small day pack so I took it with me on a long hike and set it up when I wanted a break. I chose the hammock and strap bundle which is $10 more than just a hammock but definitely worth it (bringing the total without tax to $59.99). The straps are 9 ½ feet long with 15 loop holes so you can make this fit in a lot of different locations where trees may be pretty far apart. The hammock is large at 9 ½ feet long and 6 ½ feet wide and easily fits two people or you and your furry friend. The capacity is a whopping 400 pounds so it is good that the tree straps and steel carabiners are heavy duty. The setup is super easy as you just wrap the straps around a tree or other supportive post and clip the carabiner into the loops on the strap. Then, in you go. Once inside you can use the attached Velcro to close the hammock so you feel like you are in a cocoon. This is also a nice feature if you want privacy. The Velcro closure may help keep some pesky insects out but not all as there are only three Velcro patches which leaves gaps.

Click here for my video review.

The downside of this company is their customer service. I was on a “live chat” with them and when I asked about a mix up with an order they went totally silent and I never got another response. I tried emails and those went unanswered. They offer various promotions online and discounts if you sign up for their email list. They were advertising free two-day shipping on orders over $50 which is great but keep in mind there is processing time which in my case was about five days.

In addition to hammocks they sell clothing, accessories and hats. There are a lot of hammocks of this type on the market but High Hopes sets themselves apart from the competition because of their involvement helping those less fortunate. Since I haven’t owned another hammock, I can’t attest to quality differences but this one seems to hold up well so far.

    Mystic Springs Recreation Area

    Remote Primitive and Wild

Pros: Covered tent sites (we tent camped) portapottys, free for up to a week, boat launch, spaced out sites (pretty private). Has picnic tables, fire pits, and grills. Cons: Sites flood, lots of gaters (if you have small pets this is sketchy), gets a little busy on the weekends with the boaters, it's reaallllly far from the next town but there's a gas station 15mins away. Get gas before you go back to camp. It's beautiful and clean. About 45mins to pcola

    Mystic Springs Recreation Area

Primitive site with fire ring, grill, trash can, , large portapotty and nice water view.

I’ve camped at Mystic Springs numerous times. I book the group site. Very large & spacious. Perfect for a large group or multiple people. Plenty of room for several tents. It has a fire ring, grill, covered structure with 2 picnic tables, a garbage can and a large portapotty. It’s generally very quiet. It’s a gated site so to me it feels more secure. People do walk through the site occasionally but not too often. It’s primitive camping so no power & no potable water. Most sites have water view.

    Henderson Beach State Park Campground

    The Best ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Henderson Beach was my absolute favorite campsite on vacation in Florida this year (2020)

Friendly staff and a very well maintained Park made the trip enjoyable.

I booked on July 11th 2020 to stay on July 19th 2020. Part of my experience this trip was bouncing around to a few parks to fill our week because of the short notice and lack of availability due to the increase in travelers. I lucked out and found one night available for $40.15 - It's no wonder these parks book out 11 month in advance.

Pad 13 is a roomy site surrounded by lush foliage and trees. Included on my site was a nice picnic table, fire pit and clothes line. Loop is was fairly close to the entrance and just a short bicycle ride to the beach. The roads and the sites are very nice and well maintained. The staff rakes each site before the next visitor. The bath house was equally clean and as luck would have it just a short walk from our site. I discovered on the day of departure that there was a nice bridge located at the bathhouse that takes you directly to the beach. The previous day I had ridden the bike around the loop which took a few minutes.

Site hookups - Water & Electric

Dumpsite is on the main road in and was quick and easy to drop a load and leave!

    WIFI - NO

ATT signal was decent at times. Not enough to stream.

For the price of 10 lattes you can't beat Henderson Park!

    Mid Bay Shores Maxwell

Military RV Park on the white sandy shores of the Gulf

Mid-Bay Shores, Maxwell/Gunter’s military Florida resort was formerly called Lake Pippin, the new name, Mid-Bay Shores, was chosen to better reflect the beautiful white sandy shores of Choctawatchee Bay that the resort faces. Visitors have access to barbecue grills and picnic tables next to their facility. There is also a new bathhouse with laundry facilities.

Guide to Wing

Cabin camping near Wing, Alabama offers visitors access to the Gulf Coast region with its warm, humid climate. The area sits at low elevation with terrain that transitions from pine forests to coastal plains as you move southward. Campgrounds in the area generally maintain moderate temperatures in spring and fall, while summer camping requires preparation for high humidity and temperatures that regularly exceed 90°F.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Sunset King RV Resort, guests can fish in the on-site lake. The property features "a peaceful lake which is pretty" and includes "a designated fish cleaning station by the bath houses," according to visitors.

Farm animal interaction: Cabin accommodations at Under the Hoof provide a unique farm stay experience. A visitor noted it's a "lovely cabin on working Goat, Chicken, Tortoise, etc & Tree farm" where guests can observe and learn about farm operations during their stay.

Beach activities: Access to Gulf beaches is available from several cabin locations. At Henderson Beach State Park Campground, visitors can walk to "white sand beaches for $30 a night" with one camper noting that "the boardwalk was closed right now" but they "did drive down to the pavilions" to reach the beach.

What campers like

Private sites: Many cabins offer privacy between accommodations. A guest at The Oaks Family RV Park & Campground found "space between sites" and appreciated the "nice level concrete pads" which provide separation between neighboring cabins.

Bathroom facilities: Clean bathrooms are consistently mentioned as a highlight. A visitor to Twin Lakes Camp Resort described the bathrooms as "gorgeous" and noted that many cabins have "lake views" that enhance the experience.

Swimming options: Multiple swimming venues provide relief from heat. At Camp On The Gulf, the "pool was nice" and cabins are positioned just "10 steps from the beautiful sandy beach," allowing for both pool and ocean swimming options.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Advance booking is essential, especially for weekend stays. A visitor to Coldwater Gardens noted it's "nice for a romantic getaway or for families" but recommends securing reservations well ahead since they "even have a tree house you can rent out" that books quickly.

Utilities provided: Most cabin sites include water and electric hookups. At Twin Lakes Camp Resort, cabins feature "full hookups" and concrete pads that are "level and have plenty of maneuvering space around them."

Seasonal variations: Summer brings higher temperatures and crowds. A camper observed that Henderson Beach State Park is "right in the heart of Destin" but offers "the best beach on the coast if you're not looking for crowds but if you are looking for space to spread out."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds offer play areas for children. The Oaks Family RV Park & Campground provides a "nice playground" with one visitor mentioning it "has a zipline and it will hold grown-ups we like to play on."

Organized activities: Some locations schedule regular children's events. At Camp On The Gulf, a visitor reported that "the week we were there they had a different activity for the kids each day" including "painting sand dollars, bubba the alligator show, face painting and even an Easter egg hunt."

Safety considerations: Parents should note swimming conditions vary by location. At Camp On The Gulf, one camper warned "we did see a lot of jellyfish in the water so be aware of that. We even caught one in a fishing net."

Tips from RVers

Site dimensions: Check cabin site measurements before booking. At Twin Lakes Camp Resort, sites are described as having "level, stamped concrete pads landscaped with red lava rock around 2 lakes."

Hookup specifications: Verify utility connections before arrival. The Oaks Family RV Park provides "concrete pad and are close enough to beside each other" but one visitor noted "no double sites" are available.

Location convenience: Consider proximity to services. Sunset King RV Resort is described as "right on the outskirts of town making it convenient if you forgot something at home to run to town and get," allowing for easy supply runs.
