        Beautiful piece of Wyoming

This place is a fantastic spot to lay your head! It is exactly as represented in the description. We did have a bit of noise from some very late arrivals that set up nearby, but it was otherwise an absolute joy to stay here. Any food your heart could desire is a short and easy drive away.

Large, beautiful, and affordable campground with water access... but with limitations

Huge campground with countless beautiful sites. Even if you arrive after sunset, you will definitely find a very nice spot here. The camp host is super nice and friendly. She invited us to go kayaking on the lake, lent us all the equipment for free, and we had a wonderful time with her.

It could really be the perfect campground... but there are two issues to consider:

        1. As others have mentioned, freight trains run regularly across from the campground and are incredibly loud. So definitely sleep with earplugs!
        2. The restrooms are swarming with flies. I've never seen so many—each restroom has 50-100 flies. It's a shame because this problem could be easily managed.

Still, 5/5, as everything else here is truly more than perfect.

Very nicely run campground and wonderful host. All sites easy walk to or on Reservoir. Trains seemed to whistle through across highway at least 1x every hour until late at night. 🙄 clean bathrooms. Lots of grass area. Locals with their water toys made for happy campers all around. Stayed one nite 6/14/24

        This place was perfect!

This place was an unexpected treasure. There is open parking at the picnic tables so you can face any direction you want. Extremely private and spacious. Very clean and safe place with welcoming hosts. I wanted a place to relax for a few days after some heavy traveling and this fit the bill. I am a Solo Traveler with a small friendly dog and this was a safe place for us. Owners have a friendly dog which came by to visit and gave my dog some company. This is open pasture land for dispersed camping however there is a shower available plus water in a Community Kitchen. I enjoyed the freedom of open parking and found it very easy to level my motorhome. I especially like the professionalism of the owners who emailed me once I booked their facility . Would definitely stay here again because it was so peaceful, relaxing, and safe.

        great find traveling across NE

Really nice spot with free camping, donations accepted. Run as if a paid campground and lots of overflow space where there were RVs. We got the last site (#35) on a busy holiday weekend, so happy about that as it was getting dark soon!

Picnic tables and firepits with grate for cooking provided. Was able to find kindling in the trees around.

        Bathrooms were pretty nice.

        Would definitely recommend.

        Pretty and Windy

You have to drive for several miles on some bumpy roads, but my Ford transit handled it fine. There are a couple spots with fire rings before the main trailhead, and then many options if you keep driving. Really beautiful but verrrry windy. My van rocked me to sleep every night. Overall peaceful and pretty. Also there was an adorably stubborn cow blocking the road on my way out. Really added to the ambiance :-)

        Decent

It's a decent camp spot. We went on memorial weekend and we were able to find a spot. His Subaru outback made it and we saw sedans get up there just fine.

Cows do use the area and may wander into your site. Cactus are a thing and it can get really windy. Our tent was staked down and we angled it so the side wasn't collapsing on us. Cooking during the wind was nearly impossible but doable with some engineering.

Neighbors were quiet and the terrain made it so that we didn't see who camped in the next spots nearest us.

It's decent if you want to get away for a day or two, wander around at your leisure, and read.

Pit toilet available at the Buttes trailhead.

Verizon service is spotty but I was still able to use maps.

        Wind and Sandburs

There are bathrooms with plumbing and vault toilets. All of the leantos are set up so there is no view of the lake. My dog kept getting sanburs in her paws because they were everywhere. This is a one night place. $36 to camp

I was pummled by the wind when it was fron the north and south. The water is not individual hook up it is shared with the campsites around you.

At 8a the ranger was banging in my door to explain the water situatuon since I had hooked directly up to it. There were no other campers at the site but she felt it critical that I unhook my hose. The ranger from the previous day and campsite host never seemed to care.

        Great hikes to the buttes

Easy drive to the campground area even towing a trailer. A bit dusty but at the end you can find nice grassy area (after all, it is a National Grasslands). Very windy place (hence the windmills in far distance) but we were lucky to get some breaks in between and set up the trailer to shield us against the wind. Stayed couple of nights and did the hikes to both of the “buttes”. From the second one you can get nice areal views if you climb a bit. It took us 3h in a very easy pace, lots of photo and views stops. It can probably be done in and 1h to 1.30h.

        Nasty

This place is dump. I've had more pleasant stays in Walmart parking lots with homeless people for neighbors. The people running the place seem to hate their customers and have nothing in the way of Christian kindness. Everyone that I had the displeasure of interacting with had a level of rudeness and pretentiousness inversely proportionate to their IQ.

The roads coming in are well maintained due to all of the oil rigs that are coming in and out. Spent the night overlooking the Buttes and had a summer storm roll in. Didn't get to hike out to The Buttes because the trail was closed to protect bird nests.

        Great Place to Camp

If you are hiking or on a bicycle, then don’t be too concerned that it’s a first come first served campground. Even if all the official pitches are taken, it’s ok to camp anywhere around the picnic area or volleyball court. No facilities other than pit toilets. As of July 2023, no potable water (there is a grocery store nearby). $11.25 per night for a single tent.

        A few dozen camping spots

Overall, the site presents a tranquil retreat, offering peace and quietude. The constant wind is a blessing, keeping the area free of mosquitoes. The campsite features fire rings, though you will need to bring your own wood. The surroundings are characterized by lush grasslands, and the camping spots situated atop hills provide stunning views. However, the landscape is interspersed with man-made elements like windmills and oil rigs, which might detract from the natural beauty for some. The trailhead offers a water source - while not recommended for drinking, it could serve other purposes. The area includes a few trails for leisurely walks. This place serves as an excellent overnight stop for road-trippers, especially considering that it's free of charge.

RUNNN…. IF YOURE ANY OTHER RACE THAN WHITE RUN… FOR THE LOVE OF GOD RUN

Since being at this park there has been issue after issue.

This is a crappy RV Park with run down campers , and trashed areas. The front office makes this place worst. They have daily attitudes and will make up rules and say you are out of compliance even though those rules are not documented on any piece of paper signed. Nor does the piece of paper we have signed state that the rules are subject to changes at their discretion.

They do this to kick people out!!

We have no trash around our RV, we have Kept everything nice and neat and we do not have an older model RV but because we have a tarp on the top due to a leak we were told to remove it or leave.

Mind you having a tarp is not a rule on the papers we signed and were provided. Nor does the paper we sign say that the rules are subject to change at their discretion at any time.

There are RV with trash and misc item scattered all throughout their small lawn area but the front office haven’t said a word to them about that.

There are RV that have their windows open and they are PACKED FULL of junk and trash that you can clearly see. But to them that is not an issue. A tarp is.

        Pawnee Buttes - Dispersed Camping

        Relaxing and fun with cows

We were coming from Nebraska and heading West in a Ford F-150 pick up truck pulling a 22 foot travel trailer. We stopped in Sterling, CO to fill up gas. If you are taking road 14, just know that it is at least 60 miles before the next gas station, so plan accordingly. We left Sterling heading west on highway 14, until we got to county road 129 where the pavement ends and we headed north into the grasslands. We simply followed the Google maps directions to get all the way to the Pawnee Buttes Trailhead parking lot from there! It was pretty easy, honestly! The roads are all gravel, so just take your time. They were pretty well maintained, due to the industry traffic that goes through there. We came across a couple of eighteen wheelers. The gravel was pretty compacted and seemed pretty safe. There are several areas to pull off, and if you are pulling a trailer, or you have a big rig, there is a loop parking lot at the Pawnee Buttes Trailhead that you can turn around in if you need to. The picture of me and the dog is standing on County Road 110 just before you get to the parking lot for the trail head. Our camping spot was one of many flat areas off of road 110 that you can pull off on, as long as it is 300 feet or less from the edge of the road. Our spot was before you get to the trail head, but if you pass the parking lot and keep going up the hill on Pawnee Buttes Trailhead Road, there are tons more spots to camp up on the ridge about a quarter mile or so. There are a lot of cows, but they are shy, curious animals. We had our pit bull with us, and we didn’t feel threatened. Just make sure that if you go through any gates while wandering the grasslands, you shut them behind you. There are no garbage facilities, so please LEAVE NO TRACE! There are some vault toilets in the parking lot.

This campground is conveniently located right off the interstate, next to a Pilot and Camping World. Super easy access for all your needs. The campground and facilities are clean.

It’s just a gravel lot bordering the interstate, though. Road noise was quite annoying. The office is closed on Sundays.
