CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Cabin options near Afton, Wyoming include rustic forest service cabins and full-service campground accommodations. Cazier Cabin offers a simple, rustic experience with picnic tables, fire rings, and outhouse facilities but no running water or electricity. La Barge Guard Station, available for $30 per night when not in use by forest service staff, includes basic amenities with stream access and an outhouse. Diamond Creek Guard Station provides a more comfortable option with a wood-burning stove and multiple cots for sleeping. A visitor commented, "We absolutely loved this small cabin. It had a fenced area and plenty of room. Bathroom was clean. Must bring your own toilet paper, water and mattresses but it's worth the hassle."

Rustic log cabins and guard stations require reservations well in advance, especially during peak summer months. Most forest service cabins can be booked through Recreation.gov, while private establishments like Wolf Den RV Park and Flat Creek RV Park and Cabins accept direct reservations. Pet policies vary significantly - forest service guard stations typically prohibit pets, while commercial cabin rentals like Wolf Den often welcome them. According to a review, "The campground is very well kept and the owner is very helpful. Great view of the mountains from any site and in all directions."

Most forest service cabins require guests to bring their own water, bedding, and cooking supplies. Basic propane stoves are sometimes available in guard stations, but matches, cookware, and food storage containers are typically not provided. Flat Creek RV Park and Wolf Den RV Park offer cabins with more amenities, including nearby showers and restrooms. Private cabin rentals may include electricity, drinking water, and more comfortable furnishings. Commercial campgrounds with cabins often have small camp stores for basic provisions, while forest service cabins require bringing all supplies from town.

    Jackson Hole/Snake River Park KOA

    Beautiful Location

We pulled in for one night of tent camping, saw the tent area and decided to rent a cabin! We felt it was a bit to far from rest of sites and were fairly new to camping in the area so we opted for the safer site. Cabin was nice, nothing fancy but came with a bed, bunk beds, a porch swing & fire ring and was right on the Snake River. Price wasn’t bad considering you’re close to Grand Tetons/Yellowstone.

    La Barge Guard Station

    Amazing wild flowers !

This remote cabin can be rented for $30 night if not in use by the forest service staff. This is a popular destination for snowmobiling in the winter month and fly fishing in the summer. I visited in July and the wild flowers were incredible in LaBarge Meadows. This is near the Tri-Basin drainage. The trail head for the Lander Cut-Off Trail is right at the cabin. There is an outhouse, picnic table in the yard and a fire ring. There is a stream right along the cabin and there is writer plumbing in the summer months.
There is a doorknob lock that you enter a code into to access the cabin that is provided upon your reservation. Call 307-877-4415 to make your reservation!

    Jackson Hole/Snake River Park KOA

    Just okay

We stayed at a deluxe cabin for one night. The cabins are too close to each other and the next cabin’s camp fire is right next to your porch, so very little privacy and a lot of noise.

    Wolf Den RV Park

    Small, very clean campground

Meticulously cared for family owned and run campground with log cabins. Many pros to this campground... Nice wide sites, most pull through, clean showers and laundry room. The people who run it are super friendly and helpful. Great liquor store and great food truck attached to the grounds. great hook ups, reception and even better WiFi. Only cons are that it is just off Hwy 89, but you don't hear road noise at night. No dog park and is over an hour to Grand Teton and Jackson Hole. We did find great hiking only a few minutes from the campground. We would definitely recommend this place. The owners are constantly out doing improvements, which impressed us a great deal

    Diamond Creek Guard Station

    Peaceful retreat

I loved staying at the guard station! There is a spot to hang your hammock. You can relax by the fire pit or read a book on one of the two picnic tables provided.

Make sure to bring your own water.

    Wolf Den RV Park

    Small Campground with Big Personality

We were traveling from the snow in the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone and wanted to find a place close by with warmer temps.   Found this campground on google search.  Has a total of 14 RV sites, all full hook ups with a picnic table,  some tent sites and about a dozen cabins.  RV sites are gravel and very level.  There is a playground and picnic area.  There is a shower house and a laundry.   The office has ice and some supplies.  There is a package store in the front and the town of Alpine is about 10 miles away.   The campground is very well kept and the owner is very helpful.   Great view of the mountains from any site and in all directions.

    Montpelier Creek KOA

Beautiful KOA on the Wyoming/ Idaho border

I like staying at KOA’s during road trips - I choose a cabin so I can have a bed, there are plenty of things for the kids to do and everyone can find their pace/place to wind down from the day. Some are definitely better than others - Montpelier Creek was one of the BEST. This is a beautiful KOA. Our cabin was right on the creek, and I found my pace and place on the porch and nature trail watching birds and listening to the creek while the kids enjoyed the pool and playground. Everything was in great shape, including the shower house. Wonderful area with lots of history and natural beauty.

Beautiful gazebo and fire pit.  Most sites are back in.  It was old but quaint.

Guide to Afton

Cabin camping near Afton, Wyoming offers year-round options in the Star Valley region, where elevations range from 6,000 to 8,000 feet with seasonal temperature variations. Summer nights remain cool even during July and August when daytime temperatures typically reach the mid-70s. Winter cabin rentals provide shelter from temperatures that regularly drop below freezing between November and March.

What to do

Fishing access: Diamond Creek Guard Station serves as an excellent base for anglers. Located adjacent to streams and situated amid forest trails, the cabin offers immediate access to fishing opportunities. "I loved staying at the guard station! There is a spot to hang your hammock. You can relax by the fire pit or read a book on one of the two picnic tables provided," notes Jasmine C.

Mountain exploration: Indian Creek provides access to Palisades Reservoir recreation. "The lake and backdrop is beautiful and worth the visit. The clay quicksand-like ground close to the lake was fun to play in and explore!" shares Jeni N.

Winter activities: Many cabins in the area remain accessible during winter months. Johnson Guard Station accommodates cold-weather visitors. "Spent two nights. Slept one night in the cabin other night outside. It rained both nights. Stayed dry both nights. Bring a nice pad to sleep on for sure," advises Aaron W.

What campers like

Solitude opportunities: Diamond Creek Guard Station offers isolation from crowded campgrounds. "We cheated. It was too cold to sleep outdoors the month we arrived at the Diamond Creek Campground... give us a break, we're from Arizona! The guard station can be rented cheaply through Recreation.gov and it was worth every penny! With a wood-burning stove, we stayed nice and toasty," explains Lisa C.

Comfort amenities: Private cabin rentals offer more comforts than forest service options. "Just outside of Etna WY. Back-ins and Pull throughs. The usual, full hook ups and WiFi. Park is surrounded by mountains. Very very scenic. Office staff very friendly," notes Michael C. about Wolf Den RV Park's cabins.

Cost-effective options: Forest Service cabins provide budget-friendly alternatives. "This remote cabin can be rented for $30 night if not in use by the forest service staff. This is a popular destination for snowmobiling in the winter month and fly fishing in the summer," shares Carrie C. about La Barge Guard Station.

What you should know

Water requirements: Most cabin rentals require bringing your own water supply. "Make sure to bring your own water," reminds Jasmine C. about Diamond Creek Guard Station.

Seasonal access limitations: Many forest roads become impassable during spring thaw or after heavy rainfall. "The roads in can be a little tricky without a raised truck and 4 wheel drive when towing a large 5th wheel. But once you pick a spot it is so beautiful," advises Joshua W. at Indian Creek.

Bathroom facilities: Johnson Guard Station provides basic bathroom amenities. "Bathroom was clean. Must bring your own toilet paper, water and mattresses but it's worth the hassle," notes Elizabeth L.

Advance reservations: Reserve forest service cabins months ahead, particularly during summer and fall hunting seasons. Recreation.gov manages most bookings, with typical reservation windows opening 6 months prior to stay dates.

Tips for camping with families

Entertainment options: Cabin camping requires bringing activities for children. "There is a playground and picnic area. There is a shower house and a laundry. The office has ice and some supplies," notes Debra M. about Wolf Den RV Park.

Space considerations: Select cabins with adequate room for families. "Wide open prairie down to low water level reservoir. A little noisy during business hours because there's a highway surrounding site. There are lots of fire rings widely," shares David M.

Weather preparedness: Mountain cabins experience significant temperature fluctuations. "Cool evenings and crisp mornings make the hot afternoons worth it. Gas and groceries right down the road," advises Joshua W.

Tips from RVers

Parking logistics: When staying at cabin facilities with RV campgrounds, check site dimensions. "Meticulously cared for family owned and run campground with log cabins. Many pros to this campground... Nice wide sites, most pull through, clean showers and laundry room," shares deb K. about Flat Creek RV Park and Cabins.

Hookup availability: Some cabin rentals allow RV parking adjacent to structures. "Really nice people. Helped us out in a jam. Clean bathrooms and showers. Full hook ups," notes Heather H.

Utilities management: Cabin-RV combinations offer flexibility for extended stays. "We were traveling from the snow in the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone and wanted to find a place close by with warmer temperatures. RV sites are gravel and very level," reports Debra M.
