Equestrian camping near Kewaunee, Wisconsin offers access to the glacial terrain and dolomite limestone outcroppings of northeastern Wisconsin. The area sits along the western shore of Lake Michigan at an elevation of approximately 580-620 feet above sea level. Summer temperatures typically range from 65-80°F while spring and fall can see wider fluctuations with occasional heavy rainfall affecting trail conditions.
What to do
Beach access points: Bay Shore Park provides shoreline access for campers, though swimming options may be limited. "The tent sites are a great size and semi private (you can have a conversation and not be heard at other sites). There is a lot to do for kids a great play area, swimming, fishing, boating etc," notes Jennifer S.
Historical sites exploration: Visit the lighthouse and geological formations at Point Beach State Forest. "This campground is situated across from Lake Michigan, with access to trails, sand-ridged beaches and a lighthouse (the lighthouse cannot be toured, but can be admired from the outside)," shares Renee R.
Geological hiking: Experience the unique limestone formations along designated foot trails. "The area has some interesting natural features, including some wetland-prone areas with frogs, salamanders, etc," according to one Point Beach visitor, making it ideal for nature observation beyond horseback riding.
What campers like
Secluded wooded sites: Rustic Timbers Door County Camping offers privacy among trees. "I was surprised that each site is pretty wooded making you feel like you don't have neighbors. The surrounding area is just expansive farmlands which is beautiful to look at when walking the dog in the morning," reports Amber C.
Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-kept amenities. "Everything was very clean and even with the campground full it was nice and quiet. The spots are beautiful and shaded," mentions Celeste D. about Bay Shore Park.
Music-centered experiences: For those seeking entertainment beyond trail riding, Green's Green Acres Campground offers a unique atmosphere. "While it may not look like much from the road in the approach, as the photos and some of the signage suggests, this camp is largely centered around music. A local staple, many regular and occasionally irregular music festivals are held here," explains David K.
What you should know
Weather considerations: Rain can significantly impact camping conditions. "Rain does cause many of the spots to flood," warns Celeste D. about Bay Shore Park sites.
Water quality issues: Be prepared with adequate drinking water. "The drinking water is not good so be sure to pack enough," advises Terry L. about Point Beach State Forest.
Seasonal closures: High Cliff State Park Campground has variable water availability. "Only gripe is the uncertain schedule they have for turning on water for the season. First week or two of may is a safe bet, but no promises. They have pit toilets open year round whatever the case," shares Brandl B.
Campsite flooding: After rainfall, terrain can become problematic. "The ground was a sandy-dirt, which wasn't too bad at first, but after an overnight rain it was a muddy mess," notes Nikki & Mike about their Bay Shore Park experience.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Multiple play areas accommodate children of various ages. "There is a nice pool and playground for children. While we were there it was Christmas in July and many campers had decorated. There were hayrides to view the decorations," describes Debra M. about Rustic Timbers Door County Camping.
Kid-friendly activities: Parks offer various options beyond horseback riding. "This is a great spot for kids..although there isn't swimming there are 2 playgrounds and lots of space to play frisbee or run around. We have a great time every time we go!" shares Kristine M.
Educational opportunities: Incorporate history into family outings. "Great place to explore with the fam. Hike the trails to see pieces of Wisconsin history throughout," suggests Sam F. about High Cliff State Park.
Tips from RVers
Hookup positioning: Check the layout of utilities before setup. "The electric and water hookups were on opposite sides of the site, and we had to keep adjusting the travel trailer to get both to actually hook up," cautions Nikki & Mike about their Bay Shore Park experience.
Dump station timing: Plan departure carefully during busy periods. "The dump station gets really backed up at the end of the weekend, so heads up," warns Laura M. about Point Beach State Forest.
Site selection strategy: For more privacy, research specific site numbers. "We stayed on site 13. Not super secluded from neighboring sites, but it had nice tree cover. A three minute walk to the beach," notes Renee R. about Point Beach State Forest.
