What to do
Water activities on Lake Neshonoc: Neshonoc Lakeside offers direct lake access for kayaking and fishing. "Great place to go kayak, decent place to fish, and good access to bike trail. The lake is about 600 acres in size and about 11 feet deep at the deepest point. Lake Sturgeon, Bass, Muskie, Pike, Walleye, and Bluegill can be caught at this location," notes camper Megan S.
Hiking trail exploration: Great River Bluffs State Park features multiple overlook points accessible via well-marked trails. "The trail system is very well labeled with maps along each trail. The trail system is mostly level and I would label as easy hiking with rolling hills. The park contains two viewing areas King's and Queen's Bluff," explains a visitor. Trails range from 2.5-mile roundtrip hikes to longer 5.5-mile routes from the campground.
Biking the Elroy-Sparta Trail: Tunnel Trail Campground provides direct access to North America's first rails-to-trails project. "Campground is right on the Elroy Sparta bike trail which has three old tunnels to go though. The trail is washed out shortly to the north of the campground but at check in they let us know and told us what they thought was the best way to address the issue," reports Alexander V. The closest tunnel is just 1.5 miles south of the campground.
What campers like
Shaded, spacious sites: Wildcat Mountain State Park receives high marks for site layout. "The sites were spaced apart far enough so you weren't on top of the other campers. Very beautiful scenery, especially from the lookout. All the fire rings come with grill racks for cooking," shares David F. The park's tent sites are particularly praised for offering privacy with natural screening between sites.
Clean facilities: Campers frequently mention well-maintained bathhouses and common areas. "This is a very well kept campground. The bathrooms are clean and so are the sites. Lots of pull through sites and full hook ups. They have two pools and a hot tub! They recently set up a Bloody Mary bar on the weekends and have bands by the lower pool," reports Mikala D. Most glamping sites include access to full bathroom facilities with hot showers.
Natural swimming options: Multiple locations offer swimming beyond traditional pools. "My kids really liked the pond and playground. They spent most of the weekend getting tadpoles from the water then letting them go again," writes a visitor about Bluebird Family Camp's natural creek-fed swimming pond. Some glamping sites feature direct water access for cooling off during summer months when temperatures typically reach the mid-80s.
