What to do
Beach exploration and wildlife viewing: At Deception Pass State Park Campground, visitors can walk trails directly from campsites to beaches and Cranberry Lake. "Incredible campground with great amenities... lots of walking trails to the Strait of Juandefuca and Cranberry Lake. Very green and beautiful," notes Briggetta B.
Water activities: Rental equipment is available at West Beach Resort for fishing and boating. "Beach is nice and private. Boats and fishing equipment for rent," shares Zane G. The resort sits directly on the water where guests can enjoy water-based recreation.
Stargazing: Cabin accommodations provide shelter while allowing for nighttime astronomical viewing. "Definitely worth a stay with it's proximity to the beach, stargazing, hiking. The whole area feels magical," reports Will L. about his experience at Deception Pass.
What campers like
Private lakefront sites: Lakedale Resort offers multiple accommodation options on three lakes. "There are plenty of private lakefront sites for everyone. They are really good about accommodating large groups as well. Every site comes with a firepit and at least one picnic table," writes Delaney M.
Clean facilities: Many resorts maintain well-kept restrooms and shower facilities. "Clean rest rooms in our area. Showers require tokens... inquiry upon entry," explains Leonard H. about his stay at Deception Pass State Park.
Resort amenities: Beyond basic camping, some locations offer additional activities. At Lakedale Resort, Bobby B. found "games- tether ball, chess, horse shoes, etc. If you want to make full use of the resort, plan to stay 2+ nights. Was great to sit by the pond sipping wine. Free hot showers and clean restrooms."
What you should know
Navy jet noise: Several campgrounds experience periodic noise from Naval Air Station Whidbey. "You'll hear jets overhead on a regular basis," warns Will L. about Deception Pass. However, he adds, "The jets do shut off around 5 pm and there is plenty of quite time from that point on."
Seasonal crowding: Summer months bring increased visitors to cabin facilities. "Even though the weather was wet and cold the campground was far from empty during our stay," notes Erica G. about winter camping at Deception Pass State Park.
Varying amenities between cabins: Not all cabin rentals include the same features. At Doe Bay Resort & Retreat, "'On grid' yurts have electricity. No water so bring your own or grab at the market," explains Amanda W.
Tips for camping with families
Activity planning: Some resorts offer structured children's programs. At Lakedale Resort, one family found "our 4 year old daughter really enjoyed the activities that were offered, we made family matching tie dies, she made bird feeders," relates Russel.
Site selection for privacy: Family groups should consider spacing between accommodations. At Lopez Farm Cottages & Tent Camping, sites are "very clean, they're organized and plenty spacious for your tent camping needs," according to Aaron W.
Beach access for children: Campgrounds with shallow water areas provide safer swimming options. Aletta M. found Deception Pass State Park offered "breathtaking sunset at the bay to the right and... companions at the lake to the left."
Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: At North Whidbey RV Park, Kristin S. found "it was quite a tight and unlevel location. The pavement on the grounds is not in great condition with lots of bumps and ditches, but we were able to finagle our trailer to a stable spot."
Hookup availability: Not all cabin and RV sites provide full services. At La Conner RV, Jeff M. noted "it was disappointing to find that the few sites that have a sewer connection were all taken and no way to know this in advance."
Proximity to amenities: Some cabin locations offer convenient access to groceries and supplies. The cabin area at Bay View State Park is "quite close to Skagit Valley (an easy bike ride to the tulip festival) as well as close to Deception Pass which makes for a nice day trip," according to Jen D.
