Best Campgrounds near Annandale, VA

The Northern Virginia region surrounding Annandale provides a strategic base for camping within easy reach of Washington DC. Within a 30-mile radius, campers find options ranging from full-service RV parks to more rustic tent sites at regional parks. Pohick Bay Campground in nearby Lorton offers year-round camping with both tent and RV sites, while Burke Lake Park Campground provides a more wooded experience with lakeside recreation opportunities. Lake Fairfax Campground in Reston operates seasonally from March through September with both drive-in and hike-in access. Several campgrounds in Maryland, including Greenbelt Park and Cherry Hill Park, round out the options for those willing to cross state lines for additional camping experiences.

Reservations are essential at most campgrounds in the region, particularly during summer weekends and holiday periods. Many campers note the proximity to urban areas affects the wilderness experience. "Helicopters and planes fly over regularly, and you can hear sirens from neighboring areas," reports one Greenbelt Park visitor. "If you're looking for somewhere to feel far away from civilization, this probably isn't it." The humid Virginia summers bring mosquitoes, particularly after rainfall, so insect repellent is necessary equipment. Most campgrounds maintain good cell service coverage due to their proximity to metropolitan areas. Traffic noise can be noticeable at sites closer to major highways, with premium sites at some locations offering better buffers from road sounds.

Water access represents a significant draw for many area campgrounds. Burke Lake Park features a 5-mile trail around its perimeter with boat rentals and fishing opportunities, though swimming is prohibited. Pohick Bay provides water recreation with kayaking options and seasonal ice cream available at the docks. Site spacing varies considerably between locations, with many campers reporting relatively close quarters. "The sites were oddly shaped - our grill was on the edge of the site, closer to the neighbor's picnic table," notes one Burke Lake visitor. "Our neighbors were all nice and respectful, but the quarters were very close." Most campgrounds maintain clean facilities with regular ranger patrols, making them suitable for families seeking outdoor experiences without venturing far from urban amenities.

    Aquia Pines Campground

Good stopover near the highway but hidden between the trees

We where forced land-inwards because of tropical storm Erin (potential hurricane hitting the Outer Banks). So we decided to visit Washington DC and had a stopover here. It was conveniently located. Terrain is not flat but our spot was well levelled. There is a big dog (and an older gentleman) in the office to welcome you. Full hook up was oké and our spot was nicly secluded between the trees.

    A World Away Farm LLC

Great folks. Inexpensive for full hookup.

They have a farm with chickens, ducks, horses etc for our 7 yr old to enjoy. She got to feed the chickens, gather eggs and offer carrots to the beautiful horses. Wonderful people ❤️. We will be back next year.

    Lake Fairfax Campground

    Nice for a quick weekend

This campground is nice for a quick weekend and does have pretty trails next to the campground. The sites are largely in more of a meadow and not many are very wooded. Our site, 41, was level and nicely spaced from other sites but many tent sites were not level at all. Many tents were on a full slant. There is a waterpark that is an extra cost which is fun for kids. Bathrooms are well maintained and huge.

    Cherry Hill Park

    Can’t beat it

Proximity to DC and surrounding areas can’t be beat. Uber, Lyft, bus, shuttle. It takes about a half hour to get downtown to the monuments. Our uber rides ranged from 20-45$ for a family of 5. So $4-9 per person. We rode in all 4 days this way. Personalized, comfortable. Door to door. We saw tons of stuff. No one can say they saw everything. We took the train from Union station to Penn station. Saw the nationals, the orioles. So fun. The park itself has more than most. Mini golf, two pools, arcade, 24 hour laundry, a store and office open early!! And late!!! Wow! Just can’t be beat. Great sites. So many other things in the park. Splash pad, paved roads for scootering. Just awesome!

    Tabolt island state park

We had a nice stay overlooking the marsh. The small crabs were skittering around the campsite and birds perched in the marsh. The beach was nice and clean.

Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA

    Overcrowded with upkeep

I hate leaving bad reviews, but I think people should be aware of this campsite. First thing we noticed when we arrived at the campsite was that it was very tight. We had a pull through campsite, but on the camp side it was all dirt and grass that look like it hadn’t been mowed in over two weeks. With the heat and humidity we have been having for the last couple weeks, I knew this was gonna be a buggy site. Then the rains came and everything turned into mud. We had a rug laid down, but the mud and water worked its way through that. We couldn’t enter the RV without tracking mode through it. On days it was raining we spent a lot of time in the camper. That’s when we discovered another issue. On almost all occasions there was no Internet. We had a strong Wi-Fi signal, but no Internet. Upon talking to some of our neighbors who frequented this campsite, they said they had never seen it this bad. The other thing too, was that there was hardly any trash receptacles. Ending this on a good note, we loved how close it was to historical Harpers Ferry, and how convenient it was to be able to walk to the visitor center and catch a ferry. It really is a beautiful area. I would hope that the management of this KOA would address these issues, because I’m sure I’m not gonna be the only one to leave a negative review about this campground.

    Wonderful!

We are repeat customers and come here with our troops. Nice mix of RV and tent campers. Quiet. Trails, creek, pool, fishing ponds (back end), batheooms, etc, great rates. No firewood- need to bring your own.

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

    Nice Little Campground

Decent little campground! It was quiet aside from occasional air traffic noise, and while there wasn't much spacing between some camp sites everyone was respectful. My spot was a little difficult to find because the online park map was incorrect, and the spot was basically an extended shoulder of the road. Checking in was a breeze, though!

Guide to Annandale

Campsites near Annandale, Virginia offer proximity to Washington DC while providing forest settings with varying degrees of seclusion. The region experiences humid summers with average temperatures reaching 87°F in July and August, while spring and fall months provide milder camping conditions. Most campgrounds in the area maintain wooded environments despite their suburban locations, with many sites situated among mature oak and pine trees.

What to do

Disc golf adventures: Pohick Bay Campground features an 18-hole course popular with weekend campers. "Pohick Bay is my go-to weekend camping spot. Just a few miles outside DC, Pohick Bay is a hidden gem in the area. I'd recommend taking in a game of disc golf on their 18 hole course," notes Rachel L.

Water recreation options: Lake Fairfax Campground offers multiple water activities despite swimming restrictions. "A lot to do: mountain bike trails (horses and walking, too); wooded hikes with water along the trails (great for dogs in the summer heat), skateboard park, BMX park, Water Park near the campground, fishing, & canoeing)," reports Amy B.

Historical explorations: The area surrounding camping locations contains significant Civil War history sites. "There is lots and lots of history around the area. We spent 5 days camping and exploring the civil war battle areas and other things. Definitely worth exploring," shares Daniel S. about Oak Ridge Campground.

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds maintain playgrounds for children. "There are plenty of playgrounds and trails nearby to keep the family busy," writes Kristen M. about the facilities at Pohick Bay Campground.

What campers like

Washington DC proximity: Cherry Hill Park serves as an ideal base for exploring the nation's capital. "This was a great stop to take the kids to visit the city. Easy access and well laid out sites. They have a bus stop for metro service to the city, but we took the 20 minute drive," explains Joe R.

Trail systems: Many campgrounds feature extensive walking paths. "The park is nice, but if youre looking for fishing don't go here, but you can in fact kayak down the creek," notes Jonny D. about Bull Run Regional Park's water access.

Bird watching opportunities: Wildlife viewing is a significant draw for some campers. "Beautiful campground located near the National Harbor. Eagles everywhere! Large clean sites. Great staff!" shares Kathie M. about her experience at Pohick Bay Campground.

Clean facilities: Oak Ridge Campground receives consistent praise for maintenance. "This campground has great space and super clean bathrooms with marble tile," reports Chad about the Prince William Forest Park facility.

What you should know

Noise considerations: Urban sounds are unavoidable at most area campgrounds. "Prince William Forest RV Campground is close (ish) to the DC area. It is easy and convenient to get to. Almost all sites are pull through and are close together. Most have some tree cover (and some of the trees could use a trim along the roads)," explains Kristen M.

Site leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven terrain at many locations. "My site had a slight slope, but was easily overcome using additional blocks on the low side to get the trailer level," advises Drew M. about Bull Run Regional Park.

Seasonal attendance patterns: Greenbelt Park Campground experiences fluctuations in visitor numbers. "Weekdays are pretty quiet in this campground. Living nearby but storing my popup camper elsewhere, I often park my camper here for a few days while I pack it for a trip," shares Becky.

Tree rules: Some parks restrict attaching items to trees. "Sites were well-maintained, including lavatories. Plenty of tree cover. NOTE: park service forbade tying lines or straps to the trees at the time of our visit (Autumn 2024), so if you favor hammock camping or deploying tarps/ridgelines, plan accordingly," warns Timothy C. about Greenbelt Park.

Tips for camping with families

Water park access: Bull Run Regional Park offers water recreation specifically designed for children. "Our family stayed here in a cabin on a long weekend trip to DC. This campground was full of stuff to do and we didn't even get to do a lot of it. The campground had a climbing wall on one afternoon. There are miles of trails and my gkids enjoyed the nature scavenger hunt," reports Bridget H.

Organized activities: Several campgrounds schedule regular family programs. "We had a great time here over a long weekend in August. They informed us that they had a scavenger hunt for the kids going all weekend, they had an outdoor movie scheduled for Friday night, a campfire story time scheduled for Saturday night and crafts scheduled for Sunday morning," Ben G. shares about Pohick Bay Campground.

Bathroom proximity considerations: Some family campers prioritize bathroom access when selecting sites. "The sites were oddly shaped - our grill was on the edge of the site, closer to the neighbor's picnic table. Our neighbors were all nice and respectful, but the quarters were very close," notes Alexis about Burke Lake Park.

Summer heat management: Shaded sites provide relief during hot months. "Best quality: totally in the woods so summer sun doesn't affect you," recommends Amy B. about Lake Fairfax Campground.

Tips from RVers

Leveling preparation: Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp requires additional equipment for some sites. "Good site, secure location, decent facilities with solid WiFi. Pier within walking distance. Good location, tho our site wasn't fully level, so bring plenty of leveling blocks," advises Thomas.

Electric hookup variations: Check specific site amenities before booking. "I had a 30amp hookup with no issues. They also have up to 50amp full hookups. All of them looked well maintained," reports Megan K. about Prince William Forest RV Campground.

Site spacing considerations: RV sites have varying degrees of privacy. "Lots are really staggered/set back from each other so feels like you have more space. Average lot size in general, but the set back feels like you have more space," explains Megan K.

Wi-Fi reliability issues: Internet access varies significantly between campgrounds. "Not happy about: Promised wi-fi does not even appear as an available signal," warns Robert G. about Prince William Forest RV Campground, while Thomas reports "solid WiFi" at Fort Belvoir.
