Ponderosa pines frame scattered campsites along Forest Road 117, where cattle graze through meadows and dust kicks up from gravel when vehicles pass. Toms Best Spring Road - Dispersed Camping sits within Dixie National Forest, offering free camping across multiple dirt roads branching off the main access route. The area accommodates big rigs alongside smaller setups, with most sites featuring established fire rings and level parking areas.
Cat F. found "gorgeous views of the mountains, meadows and woods" after driving 2.2 miles down the well-maintained gravel road and turning onto Forest Road 268. Campers report dozens of sites scattered throughout the network of forest roads, with fewer crowds the further you venture from Highway 12. The first left turn off the main road leads to tree-covered spots with mountain views, while the prairie areas offer more open camping with grazing cattle as regular visitors.
Cell service reaches the area for Verizon and AT&T users, though signal strength varies by location. OHV trails crisscross the forest, bringing occasional engine sounds during busy periods. Fire restrictions apply seasonally, with current postings visible at the entrance. The 16-day camping limit allows extended stays for those exploring nearby attractions or simply enjoying the high-elevation setting.
Road conditions remain manageable for most vehicles, though dust becomes an issue during dry periods when traffic increases. Susan L. notes sites "relatively close to the forest service road" experience more dust from passing vehicles. Restrooms aren't available on-site, but a rest area with running water sits one mile down Highway 12. Those seeking additional camping options in the region can explore dispersed camping near Dixie National Forest.
Pack out all trash and arrive with full water tanks, as no services exist within the camping area itself.
Description
Many people enjoy the solitude and primitive experience of camping away from developed campgrounds and other campers. Dispersed camping is the term used for camping anywhere in the National Forest OUTSIDE of a developed campground. Dispersed camping is free, therefore no services or facilities are provided; such as trash removal, tables, and fire pits. In some popular dispersed camping areas, camping is limited to designated sites only. Some visitors stay in a primitive style by setting up camp outside of any designated campsite area, sometimes referred to as “boondocking”. It is a great way to connect with nature and enjoy parts of Bryce Canyon Country that not many people see. Plus, it’s free camping. Dispersed camping is not permitted in all areas. If you’re going to set up a primitive camp in this way, please be sure to adhere to the following guidelines: Only camp on public land Keep your campsite minimal so as not to disturb the natural environment Remove any waste you produce, and Leave No Trace Be respectful of other visitors and wildlife in the area Keep track of your location so as not to get lost, and stay away from potentially dangerous areas.
