Several cabin rental options exist within campgrounds around South Salt Lake, Utah, providing comfortable accommodations for those seeking shelter beyond tent camping. The Pony Express RV Resort in North Salt Lake offers cabin rentals with electricity, heat, and air conditioning, allowing visitors to enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing basic amenities. Most cabins include beds with mattresses, tables, and chairs, while bathroom facilities are typically shared unless otherwise specified. Echo Island RV Resort in Coalville provides cabins with varying levels of furnishing, from basic rustic units to more fully equipped options. "The facility is neat and clean for a campground. My campsite was in good shape upon setting up. All sites have long, sturdy metal tables and a metal cover over a concrete pad," noted a visitor at East Canyon State Park.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Mountain Valley RV Resort in Heber City offers higher-end cabin accommodations with private bathrooms and kitchenettes, while more basic options can be found at Tanners Flat and Jordanelle State Park. Most cabins require advance reservations, especially during summer months when availability becomes limited. Pet policies vary significantly between locations - Pony Express RV Resort and River's Edge at Heber Valley welcome pets in select cabins, while Tanners Flat prohibits dogs entirely due to watershed regulations. Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities range from simple microwaves to full kitchenettes with refrigerators and stovetops in more premium units. On-site camp stores like those at Echo Island RV Resort and Pony Express provide basic provisions, though selection is limited. Cabins at state parks typically offer fewer amenities but provide greater access to natural surroundings. Guests staying at Bridger Bay Campground on Antelope Island can expect more rustic accommodations but with spectacular views and wildlife viewing opportunities. Fire restrictions often apply, so visitors should check current regulations before planning cooking arrangements around fire pits.

Dixie Creek Campground — East Canyon State Park

A good example of how government campsites should be done

Overall, the facility is neat and clean for a campground. My visit was at the end of the 4th weekend, so some messes were expected. My campsite was in good shape upon setting up my 30ft trailer. All sites are back-in and mostly flat asphalt. A little rig leveling might be needed. The outside of the loop at Dixie C.G. is electric and water only. The inside of the loop has full hook-ups.

All sites have long, sturdy metal tables and a metal cover over a concrete pad. A fire pit was adjacent. Even with fire restrictions almost everywhere else in Utah, wood fires were permitted in the provided pit. Common area toilets are well maintained, containing flush toilets and running water. Most service buildings also contain free showers.

A one-star deduction is due to the effects of climate change, which is out of the Park's control to an extent. That said, my beef is with maintenance of the beach - a nice beach by the way. It's obvious where the historical water level use to be. Wish I could have seen the reservoir full because it may never happen again. But I digress. I think the park should rake or scrape the beach surface to remove offensive weeds and people's discards. That takes workers, budget and equipment. My guess is our State representatives lack interest to fund state parks for such mediation measures. It would greatly enhance the visual appeal and safety for families at the water's edge.

    Immaculately maintained campground

We stayed for only one night, but I would come back here in a heartbeat! Big, clean bathrooms with running water, mirrors, flushing toilets, & hot showers. Gorgeous view of the lake - you can walk right down to the water from your site. Super friendly staff. Tent pads are all level and maintained after each camper. Has all the other essentials- clean picnic table, big clean fire pit, and a charcoal grill.

    Decent water destination!

We went during the summer and had a great time. The views were perfect and the lake is active with choice of water fun rentals. The site is standard with a small lawn area and a pavilion. Bathrooms are onsite as well as showers. Pet friendly but need to be on a leash at all times. Great for RV’s as power and water is present on each site.

    Mountain Valley RV Resort

    Mountain Valley RV Resort, Utah

One of our all time favorite RV parks. Located in beautiful Heber City, Utah. We felt at home as soon as we arrived and were greeted by a nice man on a golf cart who lead us to where we’d be staying. There is an adult only section if you’re looking for peace and quiet away from kids. The concrete was level and spacious, each with its own picnic table.

They have two dog parks, one of which is the nicest and largest one we’ve seen thus far. The laundry room was sparkling clean and located adjacent to the pickle ball courts and outdoor fire pits. They have an on-site RV wash available and allowed us to borrow an adaptor from them at no charge. We enjoyed an evening in their hot tub/spa. They also have a large pool area near the bathrooms that were the most well maintained bathrooms we’ve ever used on the road. To top it all off, they have a gorgeous fitness center with weights, a treadmill and elliptical available to all guests.

Overall we were extremely impressed with all amenities and the customer service provided at Mountain Valley RV Resort and would recommend it highly to anyone visiting the area.

    Tanners Flat

Good location for exploring Wasatch Mountains and Salt Lake City

You really need to know this: No dogs are allowed because this campground is in the Salt Lake City watershed.

And this: As inviting as the water running through the campground may look, you are not allowed to swim, wade or wash in it.

One more thing: Gate closes at 10 pm although that didn't stop some partiers at the next site in from us. They partied and left around 11 or so. There was no payment tag on the post. The exit is open but has tire shredders if you enter over them.

A pleasant surprise at a Forest Service campground: 10 lbs of ice for $2! (There was also the usual bundle of firewood for $6.)

An unpleasant surprise: Old, dirty bathrooms. I've seen cleaner vault toilets elsewhere than these flush toilets.

There is no water for now (July 2018) in bathroom sinks or at spigots. The host said something about a pipe issue and water needing to be tested. That covers the amenities other than dumpsters.

What about the sites? We arrived on a Sunday morning when the host was putting up signs indictating which sites were reserved. We had 3 possible sites among 1 through 19 and grabbed #9, a pull through site with a buffer between the road in the parking/small RV area.

Sites in the other area (higher numbers) were becoming available, but that area's host said many of the sites were only appropriate for tents.

Our site #9: There are a few steps down to the picnic table, fire ring and grill plus a separate area to the left for a tent. See photos.

    General site info:

    • Some sites have a concrete pad for the picnic table, etc.

    • Many sites have an area for the tent that is away from the picnic table and concealed from the road.

    North Fork County Park

    Nice, spacious, and secluded

Enough trees to keep your site private, able to fit a 30' trailer in over 75% of their spots, and holy cow the number of spots they have, this place is the size of 4 good sized camp grounds combined. Fire pits and picnic tables included, but that's all that's included so pack your generator and fill your water.... 5 stars it's exactly the get away we were looking for.

    Mountain Valley RV Resort

    Clean and Cozy

We only stayed at Mountain View for one night while passing through, but we enjoyed our stay. The office staff was super friendly. Mark came out on a cart to usher us to our site. He was helpful and provided wonderful advice for the rest of our trip in Utah (Moab). The sites are a bit close, but the campground was quiet and clean.

Our girls enjoyed the pool and hot tub. The laundry facilities were nice and even had a designated machine for pet laundry. The restrooms and showers were private and clean. The water pressure was high and temp was hot. There was a beautiful fire pit near the pool along with pickle ball and basketball courts.

This facility is near the highway but the road noise wasn’t a problem for us.

We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Guide to South Salt Lake

Seasonal cabin rentals near South Salt Lake, Utah provide shelter options from summer heat to winter snow. The area sits at elevations ranging from 4,300 to 7,000 feet, creating variable temperatures across different campgrounds. Winter cabin rentals often require advance booking at least 3-6 months ahead, especially at popular destinations like Pony Express RV Resort where concrete pads accommodate various RV and cabin setups.

What to do

Fishing access: At Bridger Bay Campground, visitors can find shore fishing opportunities with remarkable wildlife viewing. "Beautiful island in the middle of the Great Salt Lake. The bison are free grazing all around and a few came right up to our campground in the early morning!" notes Steven M.

Hiking nearby: Tanners Flat provides access to multiple mountain trails including the popular routes to Cecret Lake. "Nearby attractions include Lisa Falls, Cecret Lake and numerous summertime activities at Snowbird and Alta ski resorts. During the summer at Snowbird there are summer slides kind of like dry bobsleds," advises Alan B.

Winter activities: Cabins at Mountain Valley RV Resort offer proximity to skiing and snowshoeing. "Beautiful and cozy cabin with an absolutely stunning view of Mount Timpanagos. Great access to the nice town of Heber City and just close enough to Salt Lake City, Provo and Park City without feeling stuck in a metropolis," shares Matt T.

What campers like

Cabin amenities: Rental cabins at Echo Island RV Resort include multiple options for different comfort levels. "Very clean RV resort near Interstate. Pull throughs or back in on paved level sites. Picnic table. FHU. Sites typically close with grass area separating," explains janet H.

Water recreation: Most cabin rentals near South Salt Lake provide water access during summer months. "The river that runs alongside is really pretty and if you cross the road there's a larger river and a trail where dogs can go off leash," reports CJ L. about River's Edge at Heber Valley.

Private facilities: Some cabin rentals feature upgraded bathroom and shower options. "The restrooms and showers were private and clean. The water pressure was high and temp was hot," notes Chris G. at Mountain Valley RV Resort.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabin sites book quickly, especially during summer weekends. "It can be tricky to get a spot here in the summer. Make sure to call ahead!" advises Joseph L. regarding Tanners Flat.

Site spacing concerns: Cabins typically offer less privacy than dispersed camping options. "The sites are pretty close together so if you like your space, this probably isn't the best place," Nicole B. mentions about Pony Express RV Resort.

Weather considerations: Fall and spring provide better availability and fewer crowds at most cabin locations. "September/early October gives cooler temperatures and less crowds, and we got to see some lovely fall colors. The camp hosts were excellent as well," says Sara M. about camping at Tanners Flat.

Watershed restrictions: Dixie Creek Campground and other locations have strict water access rules. "The nearby creek is pretty, but you cannot so much as wade in it without facing prosecution and a $1500 fine," warns Jason H.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Look for cabins with playground access and swimming facilities. "Our girls enjoyed the pool and hot tub. The laundry facilities were nice and even had a designated machine for pet laundry," explains Chris G. from their stay at Mountain Valley.

Educational opportunities: Some cabins provide wildlife viewing chances. "We were able to spot many species of birds as well as deer, sheep, & prairie dogs. Only complaint was loud neighbors," notes Kalli W. about their experience at Bridger Bay Campground.

Activity planning: Many cabin locations offer additional recreational options. "There are three pools, three shower houses, and three laundry rooms. This is a great place for kids because there's plenty of space for them to ride bikes, play basketball, swim, and also a playground," describes Sheila B. about Mountain Valley RV Resort.

Tips from RVers

Hookup quality: Full-hookup cabins provide similar services to RV sites. "Check the website or call the guard station before booking to double check. This campground has 3 loops. 1 for tents, 1 for medium size trailers, 1 for large trailers," advises David T. about staying at Pine Creek Campground.

Water pressure considerations: "Be careful hooking up your RV to water. Very high pressure," warns Trevor S. about Jordanelle State Park facilities.

Site leveling: Most cabin pads are more level than RV spaces. "The outside of the loop at Dixie C.G. is electric and water only. The inside of the loop has full hook-ups. All sites have long, sturdy metal tables and a metal cover over a concrete pad," observes James J.
